January 4, 20169 yr I think they make him a bullpen piece or depth for SP, not that we have much. DON'T RULE OUT KENNEDY YET, LOL
January 4, 20169 yr League minimum is what the Marlins see when looking at Jackson and that's why they're bringing him in. As for him being a bullpen piece or a fallback/depth starting pitching option, don't count on the Marlins to be that smart with him. Unless they magically acquire at least two better starters than him within the next few weeks, Edwin Jackson will be guaranteed a rotation spot. If I was wrong, they'd have just gone with a minor league contract with a ST invite.
January 4, 20169 yr Author Does that even count as an SP? That's actually a good point. Is this a bullpen signing?
January 4, 20169 yr Admin I'm gonna open up the Edwin Jackson talk with this question so I'm gonna suggest take the last few posts and start a new thread? So if we're signing Edwin Jackson let's take a best case scenario viewpoint. What CAN Edwin Jackson do for the Marlins in 2016? What do you think is the best way this deal works out for us?

January 4, 20169 yr well he did have a sub 4 era as a starter in 2011 guys. Just adding another #3 starter to the list. GJ Hill & Co.
January 4, 20169 yr That's actually a good point. Is this a bullpen signing? I would assume yes. And I don't have a problem with him being the 5th RHP out of the bullpen. This can't be good if it's a SP move.
January 4, 20169 yr That's actually a good point. Is this a bullpen signing? No idea but I hope it is.
January 4, 20169 yr Sometimes I wonder if the FO believes our offense will score 10 runs every night so we can get cheap pitching and win every game 10 - 9
January 4, 20169 yr No idea but I hope it is. I bet the only reason he's going to Mia is because he'll at least get a chance to crack the starting rotation in the spring
January 4, 20169 yr Would Fister command much more than this scrub? At least he's been decent in the past three years.
January 4, 20169 yr He must have been offered the chance to start. It's the kind of signing that we brought in Benedict for...he's had success with these type of reclamation projects in Pittsburgh. Hopefully there is still something there. At the least, he could be useful out of the pen. I'm still holding out hope for a Kennedy signing (or the Cuban guy)...but more likely Pfister.
January 4, 20169 yr If Edwin is our number 2 starter and he gets through the first inning with less than 8 runs given up, you will be praising him. Latos failed at this test in the teams second game this year.
January 4, 20169 yr I bet the only reason he's going to Mia is because he'll at least get a chance to crack the starting rotation in the spring A chance? At this point he's at the very least "penciled in." A rotation spot is "his to lose." Any other cliches to explain that this guy is essentially guaranteed to be in our starting rotation this year?
January 4, 20169 yr Believe it or not its not a bad signing. He may have his SP days behind him although we will be starting him here until further notice. He is only costing us league minimum w/ the Braves taking on all but league minimum this upcoming season, and if he doesnt pan out we slide him to a mopup or middle reliever role which he was league average in last year with ATL after the trade from the Cubs. Still not happy w/ how quiet we have been but this is a better move than the jorge sosa and all those other fillers we picked up. Ohh and the great Jeff Mathis... How can I forget???

January 4, 20169 yr You lost me at " Believe it or not its not a bad signing." Its not a bad signing cause of cost. Worst case he will be a decent bullpen arm for league minimum.

You're absolutely right with everything you've said. The problem is the Marlins don't see him the way you see him, as depth. The Marlins very likely think this guy is our #2 or 3 starter who is gonna lead this team to the postseason. They know they need SP but they're content with letting our 2016 chances lie on cheap reclamation projects.
