4th & 5th Starter Competitions

Featured Replies

Joe Frisaro says Adam Conley is making a strong push for the fourth rotation spot after Jose, Chen, & Koehler. If this wrinkle happens, who takes the 5th spot and who gets bumped out of the rotation? How does this affect the bullpen? Any idea if Tim Lincecum will make his decision soon? And is Dan Haren finally gonna pitch for us or not? With three weeks left until Opening Day, it's time for a thread to discuss the sorting out of the rotation and in turn the bullpen. Have at it...

I have been impressed with Conley. I think it was all about him attacking more and not trying to lob in 90mph fastballs. Once he started to let loose the results followed.

I also like the idea of having Cosart work on downward plane on his fastball. His fastball always had cut but was very level/flat. Always seemed to be belt high.

This should help his strikeout numbers too.

thought the 4th sport was basically Cosart's?

5th spot should be Conley. Nicolino and Urena are not very good

Cosart was basically "penciled in" to the 4th spot but could lose it if he failed or others really stepped up. And, with a virtually guaranteed roster spot, that left Edwin Jackson "penciled in" as the 5th starter. So it seemed logical that Conley and Nicolino would head to AAA to get more starts under their belt while guys like Urena, Flores, Hand, and Phelps were only getting in the rotation if everyone else's arms fell off.

If Conley has really impressed enough to get in the rotation, you'd assume the 5th spot is between Cosart and Jackson with Jackson going to the pen if he can't win the rotation spot.

And I brought up Lincecum in my original post because if we're still one of his options you gotta believe he'd immediately assume a rotation spot.

Nothings been said of Nicolino stepping up so he's probably still ticketed to AAA along with Urena and Flores while Hand probably gets DFA'd and Phelps sneaks into the bullpen.

Yes I always mention when it comes from Frisaro because "grain of salt" etc etc BUT I've always been one to remember that Frisaro interviews Mattingly essentially every day and none of Joe's articles really come out of thin air. If he said this, he probably heard at least an insinuation of it from Mattingly himself, thus it's worth considering.

I wonder if mattingly knows hand sucks

Conley should absolutely be in the rotation. Cosart will end up in there too. Jackson can long relieve with Phelps, Nicolino can chill at Triple-A in case we need a spot start or someone gets hurt, and Ureña can kick rocks.

Don't know if anyone noticed that in Sunday's telecast they had Nicolino taking the 4th spot. Had to be based on their predictions solely. They are going to give Cosart every right to win that rotation spot. Right now I would say its Conley and Cosart in the lead to lock that down. Phelps taking over the long man role. Edwin hasn't done crap yet.

Hand is out of options and they really want Breslow in that bullpen, so with him and Dunn that takes care of LHP options.

I actually imagine Edwin Jackson doing nothing doesn't mean he can't win a spot. Why? He's a veteran guy and they won't look at his specific spring numbers because they'll say he was only getting in his work and he's proven and this and that yada yada so on and so forth. I feel like Edwin can only lose a spot if he absolutely bombs like he literally can't get an opposing hitter out or something. But if Conley wins a spot and Cosart does well there really is more pressure on Edwin then.

Soo, at this point is it safe to say Conley's spot in the rotation is his to lose? Edwin Jackson and then consequently David Phelps are about to be in hot water.

What an awful offseason.

not safe at all...i could totally see the marlins going nicolino over conley

I've been hammering Conley taking salads spot. Well....

He wont. It's gonna be as of now Cosart/Conley with Jose, Chen amd Koehler. Urena and Nicolino will go to the minors. Nicolino stuff just isn't developed enough
