May 3, 201610 yr Pretty interesting stuff about Conley's development as a pitcher. Also reinforces that our milb SP development coaches have no idea what they're doing http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/adam-conley-looks-the-same-is-not/
May 3, 201610 yr Really good article, but really concerning that our minor league coaches are looking only at results. That's not what the minor leagues are for. Ugh.

I think it explains a lot about why are pitchers never develop or why they go to another system and magically find a new pitch. Hopefully Benedict et all are changing that
May 3, 201610 yr I think it explains a lot about why are pitchers never develop or why they go to another system and magically find a new pitch. Hopefully Benedict et all are changing that Yeah, it makes sense. Not even on the field, but mentally, if a guy is in the minors and he's working on a new pitch, he's not going to get good results right away. The minor leagues are for working on that and getting it to be an effective pitch. If the Marlins coaches are looking only at box scores and numbers, guys might be afraid to learn a new pitch so they might just keep going with what they have. I really hope Benedict makes a difference in that, because that's some straight up Culture of Bullshit.

Good for Conley for going against the grain and being smart enough to carve his own way.
May 3, 201610 yr Absolutely, stuck in 20th century baseball. Good for Conley for going against the grain and being smart enough to carve his own way. Who knows what we might have in currently-shitty guys like Jake Esch and Kendry Flores? If they weren't pitching to results as minor leaguers, maybe they would be learning a new pitch or improving an old one.

I knew marlins were anti-21st century baseball until this year but if what Conley saying is true then what the hell were they doing to those pitchers down there?
May 3, 201610 yr yeah this whole thing is quite disturbing actually. I knew marlins were anti-21st century baseball until this year but if what Conley saying is true then what the hell were they doing to those pitchers down there? "Why is your ERA 5.00?" "Sorry, coach, I was working on getting some more spin on my slider." "Hahahahahahahaha, what? Lower your fucking ERA or you're off this team, shitarm!" "That's what I was doing, coach, it just takes a little time to get a feel for a new pitch." "Lower. Your. Fucking. E. R. A. Or. You. Are. Gone." "But..." "I will shove a baseball in that 'butt' if you keep trying to throw a slider. Just throw as hard as you can and let the batters hit it. Strikeouts don't matter, and we're okay with walks. Haven't you read the Marlins Pitching Handbook?" "Can I be traded please?" "Hell yeah, fuck you. Let me call Mike Hill and get him to find an old, injured pitcher who clearly will never be the same guy he was before." ~~Miami Marlins acquire Jered Weaver and cash in exchange for Jose Fernandez, Adam Conley, and Jarlin Garcia.~~
May 3, 201610 yr The title of this thread can be reused in the future when Conley gets busted for PEDs.

May 3, 201610 yr Though the minor-league system in Florida seems to have been focused on numbers that sound like they were tracking process and command, Conley felt they were making him focus on the wrong things. “They wanted me to throw my slider and my changeup in the zone more often,” he said. “They wanted me to get ahead more often. They were talking about results and results-oriented things. So if my main objective is just to throw a strike, there’s a good chance that I’m going to lose the aggressiveness and the athleticism of throwing that pitch just so that I could accomplish that objective.” Lol at the reference to "Florida." We've been the Miami Marlins since 2012, FanGraphs...

We've been the Miami Marlins since 2012, FanGraphs... It could have meant "in Florida" as in the state. Our Double-A, Single-A, and Rookie League teams all play in Florida. By the time guys are out of Florida (into Louisiana) it's usually past where they are learning new things.
