June 2, 201610 yr If we stay in contention when does the front office possibly make a move? IMO if we make a move early enough we do have a shot to be a playoff team, but waiting till the deadline may be too late. Thoughts??
June 2, 201610 yr The only thing I can see being done is trading for SP. Send Khoeler and Nicolino to the pen, bring in some veteran arms. Too early to tell. Very few teams are completely out of contention right now so not much is up for grabs. Keep in mind however we have virtually nothing worth crap in our farm system and the players we have on our bench are key players. Marlins don't seem like the type that would throw a chunk of money unless they absolutely know they are bound for the post season. Still, too early to tell it's only June 1st.

IMO if we make a move early enough we do have a shot to be a playoff team, but waiting till the deadline may be too late. Thoughts?? The problem there is we aren't in desperate need of anything at the moment. The bullpen needs work but it's been getting by at the moment. The starting rotation features a #1 in Jose a good #3 in Chen, a potential #3 candidate in Conley. We have issues at #4 and 5 but those issues aren't urgent since koehler/nicolino aren't train wrecks. Add in that the lineup is far better than anticipated with ozuna, dietrich, Prado, Realmuto and yelich all stepping up this year. We'll need a 2nd baseman if dietrich is out long term (although rojas is hitting well this yr and is an A+ defender), but other than that nothing that is glaringly bad. I don't see a problem seeing how this team progresses into July and make decisions then
June 2, 201610 yr I agree with Edmeister that getting a SP could be huge. Kill two birds with one stone by also turning Koehler into the elite reliever that we can all tell he can eventually be.
June 2, 201610 yr In terms of minor league trade pieces Tomas Telis is the big piece we have. Guy is killing it in AAA but won't have a spot with realmuto playing well. I don't think Telis can be a centerpiece in a trade for a #4 or #5 starter but he's capable of being a guy who could provide a good reliever in a trade.

June 2, 201610 yr Catchers are a hugely valuable position given the scarcity of good ones, and a 24 year old who can hit for near .300 regularly is valuable. Batting .337 currently in AAA. I don't know what you consider valuable these days but he's got value to a major league team in need of a catcher come the deadline.

But with a catcher, you have to do more than just hit to make it and be a real trade asset. Unless he has magically learned to be a better receiver in the past 6 months or so... I just dont see him 'turning it on' at the big league level and being anything more than any potential throw in piece.
June 2, 201610 yr The only way the Marlins really get good pieces is to take on some salary with contracts. SP is the biggest need of course.
June 2, 201610 yr They have enough ammo to make about 1 trade. So they better make it a good one if that's what they choose to do
June 2, 201610 yr I think we have what it takes to get a shields type SP. declining and with a big K. But still an improvement.
June 3, 201610 yr "Why bother even discussing this yet?" -Joe Frisaro This was his actual response to me yesterday on Twitter when I asked him this.

June 3, 201610 yr it's june, and the team is .5 games back of a team they just won 3/4 from, and 1 game back of a team that just lost David Wright for "a prolonged period" (ESPN). when should the FO start looking to improve the team? when 4 games over .500 isn't as huge as it is now? when the teams leading the WC are 10+ games over .500 so it's "not worth it," to make any moves anymore? when a bunch of other teams are willing to overspend?
June 3, 201610 yr Author This was his actual response to me yesterday on Twitter when I asked him this. Haha are you serious? It's a legit question IMO. This team can contend but probably needs to make some moves and spend some money to really have a good shot.

June 3, 201610 yr Author They have enough ammo to make about 1 trade. So they better make it a good one if that's what they choose to do Depending on how much Loria is willing to open the wallet they have enough ammo. If Loria is willing to take on a salary they have more chips at the table. Also before everyone says yeah right... Loria has been willing to do this in the past....
June 3, 201610 yr The minor league system really stinks so it makes me wonder if they trade to get better by trading big league players. If Hech continues something similar to a .250/.278/.347 pace and they feel like they won't be able to extend him long-term, I'd have to imagine they consider trading him for a SP & give the SS position to Rojas. I could see them losing patience with Barraclough's walks. Barraclough would certainly have trade value too because any rebuilding team would love to take a chance on a reliever like him. I could also see them using Dietrich as a trade chip since Dee is coming back. Not that all (or any) of these guys will be traded, but it's tough to make a major trade when your most intriguing minor league prospect in the upper levels at this point is Tomas Telis. If they do something major, it'll probably be a big leaguer for big leaguer type of deal.
June 3, 201610 yr Also, this might be a dumb question, but can injured players be traded? If so, I'm guessing some teams wouldn't mind giving up an asset to take a chance on a guy like Carter Capps next year.

Also you could flip the scenario and say trade Dee instead of Dietrich?

Yes but it doesn't happen often. Too much risk and often teams want immediate contributors.
