Unless the plans are to just let this opportunity slip by this year with the Marlins having a wildcard spot at this point.

So, while the Marlins have reason to want compensation for Rea's immediate injury, it sounds like the Padres did this to absolutely win the overall trade. They dump Cashner for a huge return and don't even have to lose the one guy they didn't wanna trade to begin with. It's like they spent big bucks to get something and then immediately get a rebate! August 1, 201610 yr Based on where we are at this point in time, it is better than it could have been. Naylor, Cosart and Capps were gone the other day and they still are gone. So we are no worse off for the rental of Cashner. But now, at least we did not lose a top prospect whose upside in just a few years may be much better than Rea, who is likely lost until 2018 with no assurance of what he will be. We are playing for now, and next year. Castillo in 2018 and in the future may well be better than Rea. And of course the Padres will now say they never wanted to trade Rea.

August 1, 201610 yr Source? Every single publication I've seen has Naylor rated higher than Castillo. those are all pre 2016 publications. i'd imagine castillo will be ahead of naylor on the 2017 prospect lists (Castillo still aint top 100 by a mile tho)
