Yup. Need a loogy; hopefully Lazo over Cervenka and also Nick Wittgren who's great because he can go multiple innings and never walks anyone.

I said if they overpaid for a closer. If they signed Cespdes/Encarnacion and Koji they would be mediocre, but not suck major ass.

Opening Day 2016. Bullpen was disgusting for a couple weeks. I mean we had Breslow but he was actually better against RHP if that is even worth anything lol.

Ramos, Barraclough, Phelps, McGowan,and Tazawa all have to be locks at this point.  That leaves two spots. If you carry a LOOGY, that leaves one spot for the FA that they are looking to sign.  That means either no LOOGY or no Wittgren.  Not to mention that Ellington has no shot to make the team out of spring.

I get that, however, look at his stats for the last two seasons:

 

6 - 3  2.64 ERA  58 IP 44 hits 29 BB's .211 BA 1.26 WHIP

 

His walk rate is a little high but he also doesn't give up a lot of hits which keeps his WHIP in check.   He's young and the only way to get better is by pitching at the MLB level.  Nothing more he can learn in AAA.

 

If the bullpen would be the only thing holding us back from the playoffs I would understand these moves.  But our SP is terrible and although I like our position player core they have yet to put up many runs.  My only point is that this money could be better allocated to positions of need instead of to the bullpen.

The rebuilding Twins are willing to trade him for the right return, not surprisingly. It's unclear which teams have asked about Santana, but he would make sense for a host of clubs looking for a veteran innings-eater. The right posted a 3.30 ERA over 30 starts in 2016 and is owed a reasonable $27 million through 2018 with a $14 million option for 2019 (or $1 million buyout).

Santana is a guy the Marlins have liked for long time. $28 mil for 2 years isn't bad. He's (133-116) in career with a 4.10 era and 3.30 era last year. I would take him because he's reliable. 

 

It's doubtful the Marlins have anything to give them; maybe Dietrich to fill Dozier's spot?

I really hope they eat a ton of money on Santana's deal if we trade them Dietrich.  I dont know if that is even enough to part with him.

Ziegler is close to making a decision. He'd be a good piece to have, but I think he's going to end up getting a lot more money than people expect. Mike "I Only Get Outs When They Don't Matter" Dunn getting $19 million should give folks an idea of what Zeegs might get.
