"I saw numerous swings where you know it's ball one, really. Instead of being 1-0, it's 0-1, and that's a different count." Mattingly's takeaway is the Marlins can improve off the right-hander by not chasing. "That's one of the areas we've got to improve on, is not chasing out of the strike zone, early in the count, to put him in situations that he can kind of do what he wants," Mattingly said. "We've got to force him onto the plate and understand which balls stay on the plate and which balls don't stay on the plate. That's kind of the battle with him."
April 28, 20179 yr In fairness, Volquez battled and gave up two tough runs with the error and late tag by Realmuto. If he can get his control down, he has the stuff to be successful. Still pretty pissed about this road trip, especially after winning the series in San Diego. Not really. Volquez was facing a Spring Training lineup and pretty much lucked out the whole game to only have given up a couple runs. Phillies could have easily put up 5-6 runs if they were any better. What cost us the game was the inability to score any runs in the 4th or 5th inning when we really had some chances. 1st and 3rd and no outs and we didn't get anyone in. Those add up. Making Hellickson look like the next coming of Jaime Moyer doesn't help either.

I saw a report say that :hill would do a better job if he had more payroll flexibility and no restrictions. We all know that was a lie. The Padres and Reds trades were absolutely horrendous.

Ken Rosenthal wrote an article explaining that when the Marlins acquired Cashner they had an agreement in place to acquire Hellickson instead but in the whole fiasco with Colin Rea's injury the Marlins settled on Cashner instead.
April 28, 20179 yr Just need to worry about how far we're behind the Phillies… The Phillies were 15-10 after 25 games last year and ended up 62-100 so again it means nothing right now.

I'm quoting regarding him having any discussions with anyone last winter. Which never happened because he was never a fucking free agent.
