September 30, 20187 yr Congratulations, Derek Jeter. Your team just clinched the worst record in the National League! Your prize: the 4th or 5th pick in the draft! Make it a good one! Two of the 3 Marlins OF from ‘17 had subpar years, but with Yelich possibly winning the triple crown (no NL-er has done that since 1937), they combined for 97 HR, a .289 average, 287 runs scored and 297 RBI. The entire Marlins hit only 128 HR, 589 runs and 554 RBI this year. The tough part is that virtually everybody we got in the trades for Yelich, Ozuna and Stanton have underperformed so far except maybe Alcantara, and the best prospect we seem to have right now is Peter O’Brien, a RH Bour-type hitter who’s 7 months younger than Stanton. OK, so I’m being facetious a bit. Dean might be OK, but he’ll already be 25 when ‘19 comes around. Bottom line: The team is terrible now, and the guys who are going to be here when the team is good again for the most part are not in the organization.

The Stanton and Ozuna performances were only subpar when compared to last years superlative performances . Otherwise they were fine and very much in line with career performance. What continues to be subpar is the Marlins system. Especially position player wise. Marlins very badly need VV. Getting my hopes up.

Getting my hopes up. He would be an enormous addition. Our pitching moving forward looks really solid and cheap so if we can continue to develop hitters too we would have a good, young, cheap team that can add some quality veterans at positions of need at the time we begin to contend. The cost controlled rotation is enormous as we now have a pretty large collection of SP's who might not have the ceiling of an ace but have the floor of a #4 guy or so. A rotation in 2020 involving something like a combination of Alcantara, Lopez, Neidert, Gallen, Guzman, Richards, Urena, Caleb Smith, Peters, etc is a very good sign. Much better than where we were 2 years ago after Jose where we not only didnt have an ace but couldnt even fill out a rotation with major league caliber pitchers.
September 30, 20187 yr He would be an enormous additio You sure? I just saw in another topic here that his ceiling is Albert Almora Jr!
September 30, 20187 yr You sure? I just saw in another topic here that his ceiling is Albert Almora Jr! Lol, first off Almora is a good player who would perform better on a team where he could play every day, but that aside, Almora and Victor arent all that similar as players. A Victor comparison in MLB today is probably Trea Turner batting line wise. Great game changing speed, solid but not spectacular power, good defender but not a pure hitter.
September 30, 20187 yr Rooting for Yelich triple crown. If for thanks the Brewers were simply content to send a fruitbasket, if I were Hill I’d be disappointed. Fuckin joke.
September 30, 20187 yr After looking into it more, a guy like Starling Marte might be a pretty good Victor comparison but hopefully Victor is actually able to take the next step that marte has never seemed to take.
September 30, 20187 yr Author Optimistic you are We’re where the Astros were on year one of their multi-year wilderness. Their guys now weren’t in the organization during year one. They had three #1 picks and a #2 in a four-year stretch - and they got out of it partly because two of them are now All-Stars (Correa and Bregman) and they also spent wisely in the international market. We’re not going to get the #1s because there’s too many other teams tanking. The minor league teams were all pretty bad this year. The problem with prospects is the same as it always has been with this club - there’s no guarantee that enough of them will stick that the team won’t continue a cycle of mediocrity and recycling.

You said it yourself. We’re in year one. It’s a process. You can still get an all star at the number 4 or 5 pick we will have. The problem with our prospects is we had none before this year and they’re still not crazy good but it’ll get there. Just takes time.

I'll say it again and again, they really shot themselves when they traded Yelich away, he was an absolute BARGAIN. If you trade someone like him you need to get a VERY YOUNG MLB (not organizational) top prospect back. Not a dude that is 24. You have to look at it like this - Yelich was already successful in the bigs at 24 - why are you trading for a guy who hasn't even made it to the bigs (aside from his "cup o' coffee) at that same age? Made zero sense then and is painfully obvious it was just a colossal screw-up now. I was actually fine with the idea of moving Stanton and Ozuna but am furious that with all the money they saved long term with moving Stanton off the books that they couldn't have included some more money back in the deal to pick up a much better return than the garbage they got for a reigning MVP and the #1 draw for their games (as paltry as it was). This front office just comes across as not having the slightest clue as to what they're doing. I haven't gotten into it yet but I hope to hell the other thread I saw that said the Marlins are close to nabbing the top international FA's is true because holy hell this team needs to invest some money somewhere - other than paying Jeter's salary and his giant hand sanitizer vats.

Not gonna say the trade looks great right now, but they didnt trade him for one guy, they traded him for 4, which was literally the entire reason for the deal which your post doesnt seem to understand. The point was obviously to get high level talent back but it was to also get a lot of prospect/organizational depth and we did get 4 guys who will be ML players and cost controlled for 6 years. 2 of them had disappointing years, but acting like it was a 1 for 1 deal or that a guy needed to have mlb success right away in the first year seems to be your problem in not understanding the rationale behind the trade.

I think this is how most of us feel - I understood/didn't have a problem with the Gordon, Stanton, or Ozuna moves, but the Yelich one was hard to understand. Who knows, maybe it'll turn out ok and they (the guys we got) just had down years and they'll bounce back next year, but it's not looking pretty so far.
September 30, 20187 yr Nah, I'm from the future and this team is at least 15 years from contending. Only 15 years to go? Good stuff right there I thought minimum 30

September 30, 20187 yr Great game changing speed, solid but not spectacular power, good defender but not a pure hitter. So Mag Sierra with a little pop in his bat? Is that what you’re saying?

I'm well aware they got back some other players in the deal. What you don't seem to grasp is that Brinson was THE centerpiece in that trade. You don't trade a young, cost-controlled, premium player for organizational depth. It's idiotic. You're also grossly overestimating the return by stating we got back 4 players who will ALL be MLB players and excel so much in the bigs that the fact that they will be cost-controlled will actually mean something to the Marlins and make them even more valuable (your words, not mine).
September 30, 20187 yr @taiwanmarlin ? so you're @SonOfJack too Nah,it's really @SonOfJack and believe me many people here were from the future, too.
October 1, 20187 yr Lol. Stanton slashed .266/.343/.509 with 38 homers and 100 RBI and had a 7.5 UZR and 18.3 UZR/150, and you're saying he had a "subpar" year? What are we? Yankees fans? Hope he smashes a whole bunch of home runs this postseason just to shut everyone the hell up. Rooting hard for him.
October 1, 20187 yr Hope he smashes a whole bunch of home runs this postseason just to shut everyone the hell up. Rooting hard for him. I'm also rooting for him along with Yelich. Stanton's numbers are definitely lower than Yankee fans anticipated, but obviously they are still great numbers.
October 1, 20187 yr I'm also rooting for him along with Yelich. Stanton's numbers are definitely lower than Yankee fans anticipated, but obviously they are still great numbers. The way Yankees fans have treated him this season is absolutely disgusting. Sanchez bats .180 and loafs around all season and doesn't hear a peep from the fans. Stanton leads the team in home runs and RBI and gets booed. Funny how that works.
October 1, 20187 yr It's because when Jeter and Cashman had their secret meeting last year in their "Yankees Only" treehouse to conspire on how the Marlins can gift Stanton to the Yankees for as bad of a return as possible Jeter promised to Cashman that Stanton would equal his 2017 numbers in 2018.

Damnit Silver. I told you not to build that freaking treehouse. Don't tell me: you built the secret Brewers treehouse too and that's why Lewis Brinson stunk for us this year.

My point was he's got MVP quality (duh), and he wasn't there this year. 38 HR in 700 AB is not a good year for him, especially moving from Marlins Park to Yankee Stadium. And even with that, he, Ozuna and Yelich were as good offensively as almost the entire Marlins roster
