January 15, 20206 yr Tarpley throws A LOT of pitches that aren't strikes. Wasn't the new narrative "we want pitchers who throw strikes" or something. Cheap Jeter knows strikes are more expensive.
January 15, 20206 yr Pretty sure Brian Moran is actually better than Stephen Tarpley. I mean, grand scheme nothing about this trade matters, but I do think the Marlins got ever so slightly worse by (basically) swapping Moran for Tarpley. (Unless they plan on using Tarpley as a starter, which is something Moran could not have done.)
January 15, 20206 yr I do think we could use one more starter candidate to offset losing Richards and Cy Gallen. I wonder if that's what the Marlins see in Tarpley.

I’ll take that side of the flip all day
January 15, 20206 yr I didn't agree with keeping Moran on the roster this far, considering some of the other pitchers lost to waivers in recent moves. That said there's a decent chance he could remain with the organization, doubt many team will be willing to give up a spot for him this close to spring training.
January 15, 20206 yr Author Former Yankee execs in our front office may know Tarpley well, could be a reason for the acquisition also. They may feel he's better than what he's shown in MLB so far.

They may feel he's better than what he's shown in MLB so far. 8.6 K/9 rate in the minors, with a 1.18 WHIP in parts of seven seasons. Far better than the 5.96 ERA and 1.84 WHIP in a small major league sample size. Time will tell.

January 15, 20206 yr Are Steve and Tarp Lee brothers, by the way? If not, what is Steve's last name? I know Tarp's is Lee, but why aren't they telling us Steve's?

January 15, 20206 yr His name is Ste Phen. He's asian. Got it. So it was Ste Phen and Tarp Lee for James Nel and his son, right?

January 16, 20206 yr So, no more the FA RP signing like Kintzler or Strop ? Still possible. This trade adds another option but Tarpley isn't guaranteed a bullpen spot so it doesn't mean they can't still add someone else.
January 16, 20206 yr As a LOOGY, Moran was not a bad choice. But the rule was changed. Moran's slow pitching velocity wouldn't effective enough, FO thought.

January 16, 20206 yr This is a trade thats mostly a who cares type of trade. Not exactly sure what they see in Tarpley because he has been flat out warmed over garbage in the bigs, but whatever. Its like the 39th or 40th man on the roster. Moran is old with very limited MLB time. So he may clear waivers. (probably should). Moran probably should have been DFA'd over Brice in the first place.
January 16, 20206 yr And no more LOOGY after the new rule. LOOGY can still be a thing but it would require them coming into a game with two outs in an inning already and hopefully getting that first batter out. Otherwise, it's LTOGY now and that just doesn't roll off the tongue. Moran probably should have been DFA'd over Brice in the first place. Yeah probably. But again, in the long run, the order of DFA doesn't matter.

January 16, 20206 yr Brice had to be DFA'd before Dean because DFAs have to be done alphabetically. The A in DFA actually stands for the word "alphabetical." This is a little known fact but now you guys know.
