It improves them and gives them a chance and it's moves they could realistically make. That's better than doing nothing.

this ignores the fact that the Pirates are not really shopping Bednar AT ALL.  He is from Pittsburgh and they really like him.

They also are talking about actually building something with a super impressive farm system full of players that are coming soon.  

 

Also, after Reynolds demanded a trade, it might actually make him less of a viable trade options as that sets a bad precedence.  This isnt the NBA where you can just demand a trade and it happens usually within weeks.  Players dont have that kind of leverage in MLB and I dont see that changing anytime soon. 

We need Jeter to call out Sherman again but be very specific about it "I told you guys Bruce would never sign Correa, Turner, or be brave enough to trade for Reynolds" 

He owes us that for getting MLB to choose Sherman over others.

You set the team up to succeed and that's why you play the games. The Mets are very old and very injury prone. The Phillies got lucky last year and their signings are desperate as they know the window is closing and have no longterm shot at Atlanta. They both do have major star power, but the Marlins SP could quickly vault them over them if guys blossom and they have good hitters around them.

Cleveland 2022 path. Maybe it's not enough, but the Marlins SP can take over in short series and you bet on that.

......and then simultaneously advocate for them to not even bother making some trades/moves to improve the team because it may not get them all the way there?

Did Yelich trade set a precedent league wide?

 

The Pirates are 2025 at earliest with their development/division, but yea they have some interesting guys. Big picture, Reynolds (unless resigned and doesn't appear he will), Bednar (relievers are volatile, etc. etc.), and Brubacker (innings eater effectively, not a contending pitcher for them) don't fit into their timeline AT ALL.

And if you want to take Bednar out (because he may be a guy moved at the deadline this year for more in some real RP desperation moves), sure!

Then let's get Reynolds and Brubaker for.....Rogers/Cabrera, Berry/Salas/Cappe, Meyer/Eder/Fulton/Miller (depending on first two guys sliding scale), Wendle (who they really could use as a bridge and clears some $$$ for Marlins), and pick an OF all of whom are a good flyer for them Sanchez/Bleday/Burdick/Jerar. Maybe a throw-in outside top 25 RP prospect too or who cares McCambley sort of guy.

They aren't saying no to that. It's effectively 3 top 100 guys, or Rogers, 1 top 100, and 1 almost top 100 (Eder/Fulton). With excellent flyers and a stop gap solid MI who is cheap and will help Cruz, etc.

And TBH, Brubaker is the real key here as you still have "6" SP so trade out the other of Rogers/Cabrera for Alek Thomas as that absolutely works for everyone.

They could add Correa, Turner/Longoria, and a $3m "Bass" Reliever and pump a $120m team in 2023, which would decrease to $110m in 2024 given players living/arbitration projections, and need like maybe a catcher, platoon 1B/3B, and backup SS in 2024. 

They are set up to go for it and it speaks volumes to the cheapness if they don't.
