That's a whole lot for a guy who can't stay on the field and doesn't have great power. I do like him as a player, but he's more of a complementary piece than he is a big fish. Yep. That's my big reason for not liking him too - he just can't stay healthy. Although it's not like we have a bad track record when it comes to guys getting lengthy injuries......

Opportunity cost - he's the only FA CF available this cycle, NEXT year is Bader only and he isn't as good, and the FOLLOWING year we're looking at Victor Robles and other assholes. It's that bad. No one is available, so the price for Nimmo or trading for those Arizona lefty CF is the perfect "Jayson Werth" acquisition. CFers do not exist right now so if you are going to splurge, it's here as you can't otherwise get one. He may not end up in CF the whole time, but he has excellent plate discipline and should age gracefully in a corner. Frankly, MLB is littered with SS if this is an either/or scenario. You solve CF first. That's my -long standing- position regardless of other holes on the team. Even if that solution is only for a few years (same thing with Reynolds here, who is a much worse defender but you could fake him out there part time for a year or two). 6/$132 for Nimmo? LFG. Seriously. If Taillon and Tajuan walker are getting 4/$70 and Joc Pederson $19 million a season, Nimmo is quite frankly, a steal at that amount. He is really really good and you always accept risk with any contract. I also wanted the Marlins to sign BJ Upton a decade ago and Didi Gregorious more recently, so don't take me as gospel here as duds happen, but this team has gotta do something and he makes sense to me.

There is a gargantuan difference between paying Joc Pederson $19 million for one season and paying Nimmo $132 million for six. I would actually be okay with that AAV on a two or three-year deal, but at six years? Heck no. At least Joc stays on the field and you know what you're going to get from him. I agree that the team has to do something, but Nimmo at 6/132 is not it. Edited December 8, 20223 yr by Valid

I agree that the team has to do something, but Nimmo at 6/132 is not it. It's the Jayson Werth signing. Werth got 7/$126m in 2011(!!!) which made no sense at the time for him at 32 years of age even if he was very very good. But, it was the Nationals telegraphing to everyone, we mean business. After years of sucking, you have to pony up to get over the credibility gap. Nimmo is just as good (yes when healthy PA to PA), and 2 years younger. Chalk up a year less on the deal and a little more money for inflation, the Marlins need to buy credibility. If he's not for you, that's cool, but insert Correa, Swanson, Rodon, or doing an insane trade here for a legitimate veteran and not A. Rosario or A. Thomas. They need this. It's cultural to an extent.
December 8, 20223 yr I really like Nimmo. I think some people (not referring to anyone here) underrate him. He's a solid player and would be a good addition to the roster. I fully expect them to not sign him or even really try though unfortunately.

He also hit 24, 36 and 27 home runs in those three seasons. Nimmo's career high is 16. It's a bad comparison. If we're going to be spending big money on a FA, it needs to be on someone like Correa. As far as the cultural aspect, I find it hard to believe the Marlins will suddenly become big spenders if they sign Nimmo. They went balls to the wall in during the 2011-12 offseason and haven't spent seriously since. Different ownership, yes, but Sherman seems even stingier than Loria, if that's possible. I think he is very solid. My issue is with his inability to stay on the field. If the cost is something like 6/132 like Lou suggested, then I would happily pass. If it's something like 3/70 or maybe even 4/80 (which is pushing it), then sure. Edited December 8, 20223 yr by Valid

He's not comparing the games played, simply the "maybe a year or two too early but look we actually give a shit and here's proof" signing. Whether it is Nimmo or Correa won't matter, though I'll agree with you in preferring Correa. Nimmo would still be a good signing, at least from an optics standpoint (oops, dirty word), and shows the team is giving it a shot and filling a positional need.

I'd gladly sign him for 4/80. if they can get a 3 year deal only - even better but that's a solid 4 year deal and he fills a critical role i just have a problem with his injury history since we don't have the best track record and lord knows we don't need to hear Ng bitching about bad luck any more. Correa and then a trade for Reynolds is preferable of course. Throw in Turner for 3b while you're at it 😃 Nimmo, Turner, and Reynolds would also massively help this lineup (provided Jazzercise also stays healthy for the year).

December 9, 20223 yr Lmao another big signing for the NL East. Kim's not worried. She's not emotional. Let's be honest, guys. There's nothing the Marlins can do to be worth watching next season. Edited December 9, 20223 yr by Entendu
