Marlins' 2023 Attendance Figures Thread + Comparison to 2022

The blue line is last year, the orange is this year.

I don't have full year figures yet, obviously, but here's what we have so far through tonight's game #35 against Toronto, 6/19/23.  For 2023's games 35-81, for now, I kept last year's numbers to get an "up to date" direct comparison.

Here's the "as of 6/19  - game #35" direct comparison.

While it only shows a 3,500 increase for now, it's worth noting (that you can see above in the line graph), there was that random Seattle massive spike in game 9 last year, and games 32-35 (where we are now) were a weekend series against the Mets, which naturally had a higher number than an early week series vs. TOR.

Ignoring those mentioned spikes, most games this year as you can see above have a few hundred to thousand increase over last year, and there are still a few upcoming series against the Mets and a weekend Yankees series that are sure to be massive spikes on their own to balance out some of last year's spikes.

It'll definitely be interesting to see how it all shakes out overall, but also if attendance trends upward toward the end of the year as the team remains competitive and hopefully gets in the playoffs.

It's gonna take a minimum of two straight very good seasons with the team adding in the offseason each time to start bringing folks in regularly. If Bruce really cares he'll be willing to take that hit for a couple seasons and finally establish a winning culture and put to rest the firesale jokes and stench of cheapness we've dealt with since the moment the 97 series ended.

Of course a deep playoff run and signing Ohtani in the offseason would drastically shorten that time frame =}

We would probably have to offer Ohtani at least 5-10M more than the highest suitor.  We don’t have the pinstripe appeal like the Yankees on just a match offer.   I’m all in on them spending as long as Arraez gets his.

Can the Marlins ever usher in attendance through a competitive payroll for once.  Tired of the promotional & cultural marketing, it doesn’t work.  Start spending and bring back those Florida teal jersey colors already.

Yeah for sure.  For consistently higher attendance, they'll need a longer window of contention, but gotta start somewhere.

I just hope Bruce is willing to augment the current team via trades (and eating/adding money for better players) now, and signing better players in the offseason.

Yeah, we have 0 chance of signing Ohtani.  I'd happily be wrong.

I mean we all know we aren't getting Ohtani but that doesn't mean I, for one, still won't be sad when he signs with LA or one of the NY teams.  It's not often signing one dude could elevate you into first in your division but I feel Ohtani could honestly do that for us as he checks off two critical needs.

But yeah we won't sign him and I'll still be a sad salamander when that day comes anyway.

Remember that Seattle random spike were of out of town fans trying to get Julio Rodriguez first home run tickets. I have a feeling with less Mets and Braves games this season (new schedule rules) were headed for a downyear. The Yankees coming in August helps however.

I think with Ichiro signing here before, the Marlins do have some overseas clout. IDK how much though.

SIGN OHTANI

Of course I want him but because he has the workload of one hitter and one SP, wouldn't that "double workloads " accelerate the wear and tear to his body ?

Not entirely. Being a DH, he's *only* hitting when he doesn't pitch so he's not worried about fielding so much. It's more like 1.25x the workload, really, cause your typical position player is throwing a lot too.

Plus since he's a two-way player, he doesn't count against a team's allotment of pitchers, so we could run a six man rotation with him. 🙂

He seems to be fine so far. We're not getting him anyway as the latter years of the deal where he declined would hurt us too bad.

Oh yeah, maybe that's what it was.

Except for some of the spikes, most games have been above last year's figures, though - even the weekday games.  I'd be surprised if it's a down year.

Marlins success was also sort of hidden until recently bc of the heat and panther runs. But yea ultimately the marlins need to string together multiple winnings seasons that include playoff runs (in at least a few of them) and they also have to show the fans they won’t trade away all their favorite players. Every time a guy has become a fan favorite really since the 1998 fire sale, he’s lasted a few years and been traded. Sandy got signed which is good even though he’s playing like crap for now, but of arraez, jazz, eury, Cabrera, possibly even Soler, or eventually sanchez, they’ll have to decide to extend long term (especially the first 3)

Does Ohtani bat when he pitches? If so, does that mean the team gives up the DH? Or is he simultaneously the pitcher and the DH?

yes. he's also allowed to stay in the game as the DH after he stops pitching in the game.

they changed the rule a couple of years ago, mostly for Ohtani that DH and P are two different positions and one person can fill both positions and their removal from one position doesnt remove them from the other automatically.

sounds to me like @SilverBullet didn't watch the series against the Angels.....bandwagoner for sure

I thought it was this but wasn't sure if I was crazy or not.

What's the relationship between Ohtani and the Marlins attendance figures ? we would only know it after he wears the Marlins uniform.
