Yeah it was truly pathetic as an organization they didn't address that shit. That was worse than a dude not hustling after a ball. He was totally checked out almost from the start.
July 10, 20233 yr Bass & Yimi was a disaster. I think it was after the all star break before Bender was promoted as the set up closer. Not only that, they seemed fast to justify their obsession for Bass when Bender had early struggles losing that spot that he earned. The 2021 team was the worst managed team that I can remember.

Wait, aren't we discussing the 2022 team? I'm reading your post and I'm like huh I think this guy missed an entire season.

Corey Dickerson was mentioned in another post, that him leading off was indicative of how bad Don & management was. He wasn’t on the roster in 2022.

Me and others were discussing Donnie’s terrible management on a broader level and overall tenure. @SilverBullet was discussing Donnie’s terrible management in 2022 and perhaps didn’t realize that the other conversation was already going on before he started posting in this thread. I blame @pollythewog for the confusion. I don’t know why but it seems like @pollythewog gets all the credit and blame for what goes on around here. 😂 Edited July 10, 20233 yr by SirFishFan

July 10, 20233 yr Why coaching matters, two words, Jesus Sanchez. With proper coaching they have actually taught him how to hit the ball.

It was infuriating, disgusting, and just...awful. It was such a wild juxtaposition from just two years earlier in 2020 when he was having a blast with the team and going all-in and then the ENTIRE season last year he was literally useless and did NOTHING aside from collecting a paycheck. It was pretty crazy - guy gets tossed for arguing a strike call on a ball thrown in the dugout....Mattingly just like "meh" and keeps eating seeds. Team loses....meh. Team wins....meh. Even keel is good for not getting too down, but the lack of caring was glaring for most of the season. 13 hours ago, SilverBullet said: It was embarrassing last year and it's crazy how it was never publicly admitted. Yeah, he should've been shown the door midseason. Not saying it'd have made a difference on last season's record, but it'd have shown the players the FO was serious about creating a winning culture and that losing wasn't acceptable. But Bruce probably didn't want to pay 2 managers.

I've never seen a coach be so disengaged and in full DGAF mode and i can only imagine what the players felt. Last season was the definition of a toxic clubhouse with a leader that doesn't give two shits and you had the whole Jazz/Miggy saga where it seemed like some guys might have been taking sides. Anyway, glad it's behind us. Skip seems he'd go find an ump in a back alley somewhere and shiv him so I'm cool with that. The team seems to like him and he can manage beyond using little league metrics and matchups.

I mean, I don't remember the specifics of the situation (maybe @Michael can help me here) but wasn't there a game where someone got ejected and Mattingly actually apologized to the umpire for the player's actions??

I’m not defending Don but Jazz has shown some immaturity at times & Don could have had flashbacks of Puig in LA. But yeah, I think you’re correct.

I'll agree Jazz had some moments of immaturity, certainly. That game, though ... oof. Double switched Jazz out in the 4th then didn't have the next two pitchers go more than an inning. Ended up down 2 in the 9th and had to pinch hit with Pablo Lopez as the tying run with two outs. Don was such an awful manager.

July 10, 20233 yr 2 hours ago, Michael said: It was probably Jazz. there were literally 15-20 times where Jazz got rung up repeatedly on bogus strike 3 calls from shitty umps and Don not ONCE said shit to an ump ALL YEAR. it was freaking crazy. I remember us posting in here saying wtf is going on because it was still early in the season and Don literally just let it happen over and over and over. Jazz was clearly angry and frustrated but I'm sure it would help if you knew your boss also had your back?! I mean Don just sat there looking on..every single time. Don and Rojas were just crazy toxic to that clubhouse last year.

July 10, 20233 yr Hmm, I hadn't thought about Donnie being part of the clubhouse problem last year. I know he couldn't fix it but wouldn't have thought he was part of the problem. I remember when they had that team meeting and Donnie flat out told the media that shit is bad and is gonna stay bad. Didn't even lie about things being better. Also, unrelated but related, I'll never forget when Mike Redmond made Jose Fernandez go apologize to the Braves and Brian McCann for their dustup (unless I'm mixing specific instances but Redmond did make Jose go apologize to an opposing team once) and then Redmond went out and told the media that this happened. I was pissed. Horrible. At least lie to the media and stick up for your player publicly. Donnie did have that one great time when he stuck up for Monte Harrison getting thrown out trying to steal 3rd. That's the other weird thing with Donnie, there were times when he actually was an excellent players manager and times when he was just on another planet.

Even Tommy of all people said the moment justified Jose's celebration. It was his last at bat of the year! And Tommy's about as old school as it gets.

That reminds me of back in 2020, that game where Fernando Tatis Jr of the Padres swung at a 3-0 pitch and hit a grand slam even though his team was leading 10-3 in the 8th inning. And the Padres manager at the time, some bozo nobody Jayce Tingler was so mad at Tatis Jr for breaking an “unwritten rule” and publicly criticized him in the media and forced him to apologize to the Rangers, for hitting a HR against them even though the Padres were already leading the game. Such BS. Having to apologize to the other team. Stupid. 😂😂😂😂😂
