August 6, 20242 yr Bendix didn't believe in the 2023 team repeating their success, he half ass "tried" by keeping them as intact as he could to see if he was wrong about them while not taking away too much and not adding too much to not veer away from the path he wanted to take... aka he wanted to rebuild but didn't want to disappoint the fans right off the bat. When the 2024 was shit right out of the gates, the writing was on the wall and Bendix was able to do what he wanted and I commend him for having the balls to trade away as many as he did so quickly. Kim Ng would have taken 2 full seasons and offseasons to make the trades Bendix did in less than half a season. If the plan works (and yes it's a big if and it's awful to ask the fans to wait again) then this team will contend quicker than if they had kept riding the 2023 team and hoping for good luck. The 2023 team was destined to be blown up, if we didn't do it now we'd be doing this a year or two from now. 2 more seasons of sucking just to say we didn't do a rebuild would have hurt as well.

I do believe if the starting rotation was healthy, he'd have given it a proper shot. At least into July before beginning to jettison players. The numerous injuries to pitchers just made it much easier to pull that trigger earlier.

The problem for me is that, while the '23 team clearly had issues (offensively especially since somehow Kim never plugged any of the major holes in her 3 years), they also didn't even bother trying to fix them before pitchers went down.....and shockingly, it didn't go well lol. That said, we can rehash the same "they should've done this or that" discussion. If they were determined to restart, just rip the band-aid off when teams are more desperate, like they did. Let's hope this group actually pans out.....otherwise, more rinse and repeat of mediocrity like we're used to...
August 6, 20242 yr The line in the sand should stop somewhere. I thought Arraez was that line but I’m reluctant again after the trade deadline. However if they trade Lizard, Alcantara, Garrett, Meyer or Cabrera without it helping RIGHT AWAY, makes no sense and will show if they really want to contend or basically be a a fam system for other teams. I’m not opposed to any trades as long as it lines up both with the present and the future. Like mentioned from the post above, they should have done more in FA last year given the fact that we made the postseason, the fans deserve d it. . The only reason I wasn’t angry was because Alcantara was injured and I knew Lizardo couldn’t carry the load like a true ace.

August 6, 20242 yr The pitching injuries forced his hand and long-term getting rid of older mediocre players for younger prospects was and is absolutely the right move whether it pans out or not. Positioning for a hopeful top two draft pick (nothing guaranteed with the draft lottery) gives us a game changer and possible top 10 prospect in all of baseball if the dominoes fall out way. Bendix has a method and is following it. Will it work? Who knows? But it is absolutely the correct strategy going forward. Last year's team played way above their statistical expectation and as soon as Sandy went down the proper strategy was to punt this year. It's pretty clear that they are actively tanking and if they are not then we really do have the worst GM/POBO/whatever in the world. As far as signing free agents, outside of Yamamoto and Lee there weren't a lot of +EV players to sign. Both of them were out of our price range anyway. Look at the projections and actual results of last year's free agent class: Catcher- absolute garbage First game- garbage again 2B- didn't need one, but dumpster fire SS- Rosario of IKF was the correct move, whiffed on Anderson, but no other players of note, and Otto Lopez was our best pickup. 3B- one or two useful players and Chapman was never coming here, not a huge need for us at the time OF- Profar would have been a great get, but almost everyone missed. Bellinger wouldn't have moved the needle and singing him or Teoscar to a multi-year contract would have been detrimental. DH- Ohtani a complete pipe dream, passing on Soler was the right move. P- would be total revisionist history to say signing Imanaga or Fedde was the right move at the time. Not signing FAs at longer-term overpriced contracts would have been extremely detrimental to the team in both the short and long-term. Fans that are upset when we traded guys like Marte or don't resign guys like Soler clearly don't understand forward projections and analytics. Whether this path works or not it is 100% the right direction. It will depend on our talent evaluators as well as our player development from here on out. That I what all the front office moves are about, long-term. As far as this year's free agent crop, it's a pretty thin list of worthwhile signings so unless we go scorched earth and sign he who shall not be names # 1 and he who shall not be names #2 (Bauer and Urias) don't expect a corncucopia or signings this upcoming off-season either.

I fully understand what he's trying to emulate and I do not fault Bendix one iota for doing what he's doing but the fans deserve some modicum of sustained success versus just one decent season out of many where it's immediately followed up with a near full teardown again and another empty promise of "oh just give us your money for another 3+ seasons and we'll at least start to hover near .500 by then". Also, if you were just using some hyperbole - show me ONE fanbase in any sport that isn't "emotionally irrational"? Please note my thoughts do not apply to @TaiwanMarlins

This is where I fault Bruce (and to a lesser extent Kim or Bendix...jury out on the latter for this point) for not having vision. If he'd open the pocketbooks to a still low but better $110-120M payroll, we'd be able to layer some contracts of players that help throughout ups and downs. Offset but layer so you don't have 3 6-year deals all signed the same year, but if you sign one in year 1, one in year 2, one in year 3, etc. so they expire in different years. 1 hour ago, TheMarlinsProject said: The pitching injuries forced his hand and long-term getting rid of older mediocre players for younger prospects was and is absolutely the right move whether it pans out or not. They've completely lost that trust until they have multiple years of proving things are different. Bruce hasn't had any concept of the market since he got here and is following business as usual with the teardown and start over every few years. We really need a "smart" Steve Cohen that allows spending on targeted key players (as opposed to anyone/everyone), and doesn't have to check the couch cushions. Edited August 6, 20242 yr by rmc523

Now the 3 most successful teams by that metric during that era were the Red Sox, Giants, and Astros. One could argue the Red Sox might be the only one that leveraged free agency into championship although some shrewd trades were a major role. The Astros were largely home grown as was the Giants core. Also, it takes a pretty short memory to forget the Rays were by far the best team in baseball last year until pitching injuries and a certain black swan event occurred (Pedo Franco) and then the rails came off. Do we want to be the Rays? Absolutely. They are perennial contenders and are the exact blueprint model for a smaller market team (or any team for that matter). That is precisely why we hired Bendix. Player development, scouting, and shrewd drafting and international signings are precisely the model for success. See Astros, Giants, and probably the greatest example the Royals championship team. Those are the areas we were lacking and precisely what the Marlins have been working on improving since Bendix got here. Does supplementing with free agents help, of course, but it does no good without the core mentioned two paragraphs above. It does far more damage to a franchise signing free agents on the downside of their career than keeping players through their peak years. That goes for teams with budgets on both sides of the spectrum. The way the free agent system is set up is a parlor trick to fool teams into paying players far more than their actual future worth. It is imperative to focus on other things for success.

The last time three times we spent big money in the free agent market were the horrific signings of Buehrle, Heath Bell, Reyes, etc. At least that one they realize very soon how bad they f'ed up. Here’s one issue for me, if Sandy returns back to form, most likely in 2026, the blueprint should already be in place, yet you mentioned that Sandy should be traded for maximum value. However the Astros and the Giants teams you mentioned probably wouldn’t agree with this based on their history. Trading Sandy is exactly why you need a greenprint once the blueprint is checked though. Sustained success through the blueprint is nice (Rays) but it shows that even a hiccup can turn your season into a setback. You have to buy insurance so you can protect the franchise a little bit.

I feel they pulled the plug too early on that group and expected things to click immediately, but obviously Loria didn't want to finance that. Regarding the Chen signing - he was pretty good for several years in Baltimore, which isn't a pitcher friendly place.....I had no problem with that signing at the time.....for whatever reason, he imploded and never got back around. That said. FA should be used to compliment what we already have, not to build the entire team. It should be a tool to fill the last gap or two. Everyone knew the Garcia signing was terrible before the ink dried.....I have no idea what Jeter was thinking there. Wasting money on guys that weren't ever that good isn't a good move, and results in jettisoning useful pieces like Berti because Bruce can't afford the extra couple million since it's going to Garcia.

Its a half truth that the squad was kept together. Their best power bat (Soler) was never replaced. Not really sure how you expect to maintain any success with your best offensive piece ripped away from you. They more than covered for his power with Burger and Bell going into the season. They needed guys who could get on base more than swing-for-the-fences. OBP% and speed (and a manager who encourages stealing bags) would play a LOT better in this lineup than just a home run hitter. While the 2023 team was far from perfect it was a team that was trending in the right direction. Its still such a slap in you fan base's face to take a team that is in the playoffs and then basically shred them to cut costs. aka the Marlins special. --yet you pointed out a few times how they weren't that good because stats said otherwise. Now that it fits your "LET'S RILE UP THE BOARD" narrative, it's "oh they were good and getting better". You really just post stuff for the occasional new poster who shows up to this site and hasn't seen your dog and pony show already. I said it long ago, last winter was the time to push, even with the Sandy injury. Go get a bat or two. Push some chips in and pony up to the big boy table. Bendix was in over his head with this job and Bruce Sherman only cares about putting more profits in his pockets. -he's received plenty of positive reviews for his deadline trades. I've yet to see a bad one to be honest. Ng did nothing different than Bendix during her tenure and she received a MUCH longer leash versus a guy who hasn't even been here a full year yet. This is you just grasping at straws because a few guys on the board hate him so again - it fits your narrative. Bendix works within the parameters Bruce gives him. He's certainly a lot more active than Ng was though. I have a strong feeling that Ng would have gotten maybe 1 or 2 trades done tops at the deadline because she was so slow with every single thing she did. Loria (who was a total dog shit owner on so many levels) was 5x better an owner. -Literally nobody on here would disagree with this so your typical contrarian stance would just make you look like a total idiot so yeah, you're gonna agree with this as nobody would take the opposing side. But just you wait, you'll "change your mind" if some random person ever decides to start up the Sherman is better campaign. In the end, Marlins made the playoffs last year with a very bad offense that has regressed to what the stats showed. Bruce didn't authorize any spending in the offseason to get anyone better and revamp the lineup to play to their home park or sign any of the vet arms available as 1-2 year deals. Team was horrid out of the gate and literally out of the race by May. Bendix began following his Rays blueprint and has restocked the farm. Gonna have to wait a couple seasons and give him the same chance Ng got before declaring him in over his head or anything. Bendix has not shown he has no clue what he's doing. He hasn't said ignorant shit like "Soler is a great OBP guy" or "Avisail typically hits 30hr a year" in front of a camera. He does have a punchable face though - so there's that.
August 7, 20242 yr Sherman came in with guns loaded, firing Marlin icons (Dawson, Jack Mckeon & Mr. Marlin). He’s also fired or went through 2 GMs and 2 coaches after this year. That’s something Loria could appreciate being he did the same things. Sherman and Loria are mirror images right now. Success or failure in a modest time frame usually becomes transparent that it always starts from the top. If the foundation (owner) is unstable then it will eventually lead to rebuilding again and again. So here are some examples, Loria hired Sampson (brother in law) a nobody errand boy who talks fast and is quick witted. Sherman hired Jeter a HOFer who had no experience at all. These owners clearly don’t understand the importance of a healthy resume. You can tell Frankenstein to build through the draft, or through FAgency and he can but that doesn’t mean it be successful. That’s what has happened thus far. Now Bendix might actually have a resume under his belt so time will tell, If so, then Sherman corrected one of his own problems even if he is a cheap skate like Loria. If I had to choose who is worse, Loria gets my vote alone just for changing those classic teal uniforms. Edited August 7, 20242 yr by Nicebeinghere
