Marlins' Trade Deadline Thread (July 30, 6pm)

Featured Replies

Figured we may as well make a catchall thread for Marlins trade rumors and deadline (I know moves of note will get their own threads).

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/07/jazz-chisholm-trade-rumors-marlins-mariners-royals-pirates.html

While much of the focus has been on closer Tanner Scott, who’s a free agent at season’s end, Craig Mish of SportsGrid and the Miami Herald reports that there’s a “growing belief” Jazz Chisholm Jr. will also be traded. Mish lists the Mariners as  a “club to watch” if Chisholm is moved and also suggests the Pirates and Royals could join the bidding.

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/07/marlins-trade-rumors-jesus-luzardo-bryan-de-la-cruz-jesus-sanchez.html

The Marlins are open to offers on center fielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. and will have multiple bullpen pieces available in the next three weeks, but they’re not planning to move anyone and everyone on the roster. Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports that the Fish aren’t going to move lefty Jesus Luzardo until he’s fully healthy again, which likely points to an offseason trade or even a deal at next year’s deadline. Mish adds that Bryan De La Cruz and Jesus Sanchez are both likely to stay in South Florida as well. De La Cruz has already drawn interest, but he and Sanchez are both controllable through the 2027 season.

It's pretty amazing that he's making me want Loria back.

Didn’t realize Jesus Sanchez had a 51% hard hit rate.

DLC is so medicre though and 4th OF at best with awful defense. Dont see how he has any trade value

because in a league-wide down year for offense a .700ops guy will carry SOME value - especially as a bench piece/spot starter on a deep team.

i think it's dumber that apparently they're hanging onto him when they could move him for another piece, but you know, cheapskates will skinflint

If Sandy comes back strong next year he’s gone at trade deadline imo

Oh for sure. I'm betting almost everyone currently on the team will be gone if they can find trading partners - save for anyone making close to league minimum with control left (production, or lack thereof, will literally not even matter as long as they're cheap and controllable).

I mean this was literally a playoff team last year in need of just a few tweaks in the offseason and Bruce did absolutely nothing except cry that it costs too much by his refusal to spend on anything.

Fish not competing in 2025 either per Craig (not surprise obvs)

I mean, we already saw the writing on the wall with the Arraez return - it wasn't for help now/next year, it's guys well down the road.

It's pathetic and infuriating really.  Aside from a conditioning argument, the pitching injuries this year are something that couldn't have been helped.....but there was yet again no attempt at a forward thinking vision - no attempt to sign guys with a year or two down the line in mind.  A few years ago we could've signed a couple guys when we may not have been ready, but they'd be there for when we were ready (i.e. last year, and should've been this year) - once the injuries happened and threw this season into lost mode, and a few productive guys were out there late, we should've been signing them with an eye toward next year.  Instead, no, let's blow it all up.  Jeter didn't seem up for the job, but it's no wonder he left, since we're seeing Bruce has zero intention of following through with his spending promises.

I hate Jeter for hitching himself to the perhaps the cheapest owner in all of MLB in order to go play Mr. Big League Executive but when this happened almost immediately after signing Avi (rumors where he was also trying to sign Castellanos at the time when he called it quits) the writing was on the wall that Bruce refused to spend anything meaningful to improve the team...EVER. Despite his spin, we all knew this was Bruce saying NO to spending any more money on another "big" contract.  He lied to Jeter and Jeter peaced out leaving an absolute train wreck behind him in terms of drafts and organizational hires.

I also blame MLB for allowing the sale - we all know they got it because Jeter was involved.

I held out hope that maybe he would actually spend when the "time was right"......and I even gave them a pass after 2020, given broad economics at the time (though there'd have been good value in the reduced salaries.....but for him to rinse and repeat the nothing approach after last year is disgraceful.

and again, looking back, Avi was their ONLY "big" FA contract in the ENTIRE TIME Bruce has owned the team....ONE player...for 15mil per roughly...that was the pinnacle of Bruce's spending and all he has agreed to.  That's just fucking disgusting. But this is who MLB wanted in there because OMGITSJETER!

Why did we obtain Josh Bell? He seems to  only occasionally make contact and then it's a bouncing ball to first or second. He makes Justin Bour look like Norm Cash..(too obscure?)

because he actually helped the team out last year and they were able to get to the playoffs partly due to his success with the team down the stretch.  Ng didn't give up much if memory serves.

Got rid of the contract of Segura, and gave them Khalil Watson, who had all the off-field issues.

But yes, he helped us get to the playoffs for sure.

Crazy that of the first 10 SS that were taken in the 2021 draft, every one of them was significantly better than Watson.  Watson dropped because of his character issues and 15 teams were smart enough to pass on him and the 16th team was, well the Marlins.

Then we doubled-down on stupid and took 2 more SS in our first four picks with both being complete busts (Morrisette and McCants).

Then we picked a bunch of cheap old pitchers of which none will make an impact.

Then we didn't sign Ivan Melendez who went on to be college player of the year and would probably be cracking the lineup right about now.

And then there is Joe Mack, the lone hope for a draft from hell.  C'mon Joe.

Watson with a .741 OPS this season in AA so there is that for him.  I guess.

Cardinals have a WC spot with like a -40 run differential 🤔

did Ng quit her softball gig to be their GM?

I talked with a Marlins scout (I noticed his Marlins lanyard and then his MLB ID with team logo) at a Red Sox complex league game the other day, according to him no one on the roster is untouchable and they really hope to be active at the deadline, he also alluded that things were better under Ng at least in the scouting department.
