rferry is right. Mordi is not elegible. But he can help us down the stretch as a pinch hitter. He had a knack for coming up with a big hit in a big spot. He's been there before so I don't think he'll be fazed by the pressure. He can help us get to the playoffs but not once we're there.

XM and Sirius will not replace local broadcasts. It will make out of market games available to people all over the country like DirectTV does with their sunday ticket. Hockey on the radio sucks. I mean it's even worse than Hockey on TV. And Canadians watch their hockey on TV so I don't know how much XM will benefit.

By the way there was a guy that went to my high school whose hair was salt and pepper 50/50 when he was 18. Also you lump in the end of last season. But he has had poor second halves before and come out the next year fine, so the two aren't necessarily linked. Besides if he was on steroids before why would he suffer so much in the second half? The roids are supposed to help you reccover. None of the steroid stallions we we've seen before (like Mcguire, or Giambi or Bonds) tailed off in the second half. You know it's just possible that Mike is an average hitter who played above his ability for a period of time and is now playing below his ability.

I'm quite happy with Paul "poor man's pudge" LoDuca. He's a fireplug and a sparkplug. Gotta love how he handles Dontrelle and the other pitchers. By the way I heard that when he was with the Marlins Pudge never really was involved in the scouting of the other team's hitters. Mike Redmond was the one that conducted all those meetings with the pitchers.

I don't know Mike, I met him briefly at a golf tournament but my wife's cousin is pretty tight with him. We were talking about it on our way to Dolphin game and my wife's cousin says the same thing about Mike's paralysis by analysis. At least that what Mike is saying it is. He has somehow allowed doubt to creep into his head and that's never good for a hitter. Some guys go in there not thinking anything. Completely blank. They see the ball, they hit the ball. Other guys analyze everything. It can work both ways. But when you start guessing wrong and get down on yourself it's a lot tougher. I haven't analyzed Mike's approach too much because I've missed a lot of games this year but when he's been successful in the past I noticed that he always took the firsst pitch in his first 2 or 3 at bats in a game. Usually late in the game he'd swing away on the first pitch knowing that the pitcher would want to try to get ahead. I wonder if pitchers have just picked up on his tendencies and that there's really good and well publicized (within baseball) scouting report on him. Or perhaps he has strayed somehow from his formula. Also I'm not superstitious about anything in my regular life but with baseball I am. And I've noticed that Mike changed the song he gets introduced to this year. Maybe he he ought to go back to "ya'll gonna make lose my mind. Up in here. Up in here"

Well, you can be certain of ONE thing: George Bush's BROTHER doesn't like the Florida Marlins. Remember the time Jeb put the kibosh on the stadium approval on Opening Day? 941884[/snapback] Tru dat That jacksass doesn't see that the Marlins won't generate any sales tax for florida when they are in nevada. He also vetoed a law that would have made it illegal for slowpokes to hang out in the left lane on the freeway.

I was in a fraternity and loved it. But the answer to your question is "it depends". Your handle tells me you are going to FIU which is a commuter school. If you are from Miami and have friends in school a fraternity may may not be as appealing to you as it was to me. I went to small all boys Catholic high school, Belen. But I attended UF which at the time had 35,000 undergrad students (now it's 45,000). Only two other guys from my high school senior class went to UF and they weren't really friends of mine. By joining a fraternity, I made a lot of friends, many of which I still keep in touch with 15 years later. I also lived in the fraternity house for 3 years which saved me money (rooms and board in the house was cheaper than an appartment or a dorm). The savings almost made up for the dues I had to pay. The drinking age had just turned for 19 to 21 a few years earlier and so fraternities were the last bastion of underage drinking (older brothers in the house would buy kegs). We also had a lot of social functions. I met my first wife through the fraternity. She was a "little sister" of the fraternity. Little sister groups don't formally exist any more (lawyers and femininst runnied that) but there are still female "camp followers" which is a good thing. Something non-greeks will tell you is that frat guys are all this way or all that way. Nothing could be further from the truth. At UF we had 33 fraternities and they were all different. Some were jocks, some were nerds, some black, some jewish and then there houses that were eclectic. That's the way my fraternity was. Eclectic. We had potheads, bookworms, jocks, Blacks, Jews, Hispanics, everything. At FIU I don't think the fraternities have houses which is kind of a bummer. It's a natural place to congregate. If you live in Miami you probably have obligations like a job or family so its different than when you are away at school. Hope that helps.

Wow sometimes I think people disagree just to disagree. When I say undervalued I mean GMs don't generally pay top dollar for a defensive greats unless they put great offensive numbers. I'm talking where the dollars are spent. Orlando Cabrera doesn't command A-rod or garcia-parra money.

After all the extra expenses Huizenga charged them for, the Marlins barely saw any money from the 2003 postseason, how the hell are they going to lose $20-30 by missing the postseason? $20-30M in revenue, MAYBE, but net margin?!? Get the hell out of here, Gammons and your source. I listened to the Baseball Prospectus podcast from last week and they referenced a calculation made by one of their writers that an average team has a $30 million windfall if they make the playoffs. Of course that's an average. Don't forget that increased interest in a ballclub means increased TV viewership. Now the playoffs and world series broadcasts are owned by MLB but the increased interest in the Marlins after the 2003 season resulted in increased ratings in 2004. Increased ratings make advertising more expensive (and more profitable for the club) And TV is the most important revenue stream for the Marlins. If they make the playoffs they'll have less churn on their season ticket base and will be able to sign new people up.

Let this be an example to us all. We need to keep our eyes open and protect each other. Your persistence in keeping the 911 operator informed of what was going on definitely helped catch these guys. Unfortunately the reactions are often slow and people get frustrated. Great job all the way around and congrats. You should be prooud of yourself as should your parents. I wonder if the guy who was working on the stadium design for HOK would let us in on the playing dimensions for the (proposed) new park. The reason I ask is that I think the Marlins have had success with their emphasis on pitching and defense. The big ballpark has suited them well. Since defense is underated by a lot of GMs these days we could continue to assemble a good/cheap team if we had similar dimensions in the new ballpark.

It's true, George Bush really doesn't like the Florida Marlins. Otherwise he would have mobilized FEMA quicker when Al Leiter began stinking the joint out and then when Beckett's blister came back. Look I'll admit up front I hate the canes. The OB is an intimidating place for opponents to play but that's the only thing it has going for it. You have to admit that DS is better experience for the fans. Chair backs, plenty of bathrooms, quality concessions (at least better than the OB) plenty of parking. The OB is horrible in all of those areas. I understand the nostalgia, but you be a captive of it when it makes zero sense for the parties involved. People say all the time they don't want public money spent for buildings for private entities. But UM is a private entity and they want to spend more than 100 million of public funds to fix that heap of rubble. The OB has outlived its useful life. That should have been apparent when the OB committee decided to move the big game. Do you think the OB Game would be a BCS bowl if it were still played at the OB? Our town deserves a first class facility. And the both canes (at DS) and marlins would be playing in one if this thing happened and they knocked the OB down.
