1. I wasn't aware that there was anything other than RF/9, but it does appear that BR lists both. In McGehee's case it makes no difference, though, because both are within 0.01 of each other, meaning that they are virtually identical and both well below league average. I still fail to see how it's a "subjective" stat. People are throwing around this opinion/subjectivity stuff around way too much. there are many different articles to refer to reference the development of defensive statistics and their flaws and range factor is one the least reliable statistic. However I will bring out some more simpler statistics we can more easily understand, where McGehee is significantly behind from other 3rd basemen is opportunities and assists. Therefore you would infer that he is not trying to field balls that other 3rd basemen would normally take chances at, however watching him day in and day out, it is hard to make that correlation. He has been steady as a rock. Is he a better defender than Placido Polanco was last year? No, Polanco had a far better Range factor than McGehee has right now (He was a former SS so that is to be expected)...their D-WAR exactly the same at (-.3). So is McGehee as good a glove man as Polanco? per D-War he is...Go Figure!
2. I stand corrected reference to LoMo
3. Yes, I think so. If you are going to cite a rudimentary statistic such as fielding percentage, I'm surprised that you didn't look at range factor, which has him among the worst in baseball. It's not a perfect stat, but I think it does have some useful application. I did but that is a pretty subjective stat in my opinion besides there are whole bunch of different calculation of range factor
4. Jones is here. deal wid it Jones has provided a good amount of homeruns what I don't get is that people here use to gripe about how bad LoMo was at First base and now when we have Jones who is truly by far a disaster with the glove at first base, it's like "Oh well" or as PopTart clearly indicated "Deal wid it"... As a Marlin's fan , it is hard for me to watch him, day in and day out, totally lost out there. The play the other day Bases loaded 1 out ground ball sharply hit to first he never tried getting the runner at the plate since the DP was not there and it cost the Marlins a run. In Fact Salty ended up telling him to go to first to at least get one out on the play. He almost stood there not knowing what to do with that ball in his hand. It reminded me of my kids little league baseball at the age of 9. If we have to be content with that then stop complaining about Hech being the worse SS in the majors. Stop complaining about Turner/Wolf, being lousy starters. Hey might as well turn off the scoreboard and not care if the Marlins win or lose.
5. http://www.fishstripes.com/2014/6/20/5827004/miami-marlins-promotions-jake-marisnick-anthony-desclafani-update So far in the majors, Marisnick has been a mixed bag as well. On the one hand, he is hitting .294 with a passable .333 OBP. On the other hand, those have all come on singles, and he has also struck out six times in 18 plate appearances. The plate discipline remains a major concern and is still his primary barrier to success in the big leagues. He did not resolve that problem in Triple-A, even as he had a dominant May; Marisnick walked just 10 times in 250 plate appearances before his promotion. and those rates were identical in April and May. Still, he has added some speed to the roster, having stolen two bases already. He also adds above-average defense to the Marlins' already-strong defensive outfield. Last night, he showed evidence of that in chasing down this shallow popup and throwing out a runner for a double play. Marcell Ozuna was already an above-average center fielder for Miami, but having the faster and more athletically gifted Marisnick on board makes the Fish an even better defensive outfield. Marisnick makes our Outfield better and adds much needed speed into the lineup BTW Yelich was mostly a first baseman in HS so it would be an easy conversion back to first base There is no way Yelich would be worse than Jones defensively
6. Because range isn't really about "fielding everything that comes your way." I know, but is McGehee really that limited in range?
7. In my book the next one to watch would be Jose Urena he has the best stuff of all 2nd best change up of all Marlins prospects and a heater that touches 98 mph. I would say Conley but he has been struggling
8. surprise...surprise ! Furcal on the DL again! Go Figure!
9. The Elephant in the room is McGehee HR stats since 3rd base is such a power position his 1 HR is the anchor in comparison BTW McGehee is leading the NL in fielding percentage (.979) and amongst qualifying 3rd basemen has the least amount of errors with 3... What I don't understand is that he has negative WAR defensively (-0.3) How can they determine his range being that bad when he is fielding everything that goes his way. In contrast you have Pedro Alvarez has 17 errors Fielding percentage (.928) and his D-WAR is (0.3) http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/fielding/_/position/3b/league/nl/order/true WAR leaves me scratching my head most often than not
10. looking at the before mentioned 3rd basemen: Frazier, Wright and Carpenter it could easily be said that besides Frazier's 16 HR McGehee is actually having a better year than all the others. I would bet that if Frazier played at Marlins park his power numbers would not be even close to what they are now McGehee does deserve to be an All Star right now
11. BTW Valbuena has started 32 games at 3rd base Mike Olt has started 38 games at 3rd base
12. Frazier, Carpenter, Valbuena, and Sandoval all have higher WAR than McGehee. Frazier and Carpenter significantly higher. But that is only the opinion of sabermetrics. Mike Olt is starting at 3rd base, not Valbuena for the Cubs now. You should look up the Cubs most current depth chart Valbuena is platooning at 2nd and 3rd but he is no longer listed as the starter
13. I agree Cishek is an All-Star, McGehee should be selected but it is unlikely
14. Can't stop watching the replay. What an arm. I know I have watched it about 100 times already, each time I am more amazed...talk about a perfect throw! Usain Bolt would have had a hard time scoring with that throw. I always knew Ozuna had a rifle for an arm but the accuracy is beyond belief. That throw should be shown on every training video from this moment forward. The technique was textbook and flawless.
15. BTW those 2 throws by Ozuna would have made Dave Parker and Roberto Clemente proud
16. Good point. In Cishek's last 9 innings he's given up 0 ER, 4 hits, 2 BB and only struck out 11. Something must be seriously wrong with him. Bring back Juan Carlos Nunez/Leo Oviedo whatever his name was and his weak-ass changeup
17. Like? A lot of people would say Tony Perez, some would also say Joe Cronin and Orlando Cepeda
18. There are players who have made the HOF because of their ability to hit with RISP. This is not a new concept, actually teams look for these kind of players often seem to be impossible outs when RISP. They are like sharks smelling blood in the water. McGehee has been that guy so far. Lets enjoy it while we can
19. These are the Marlins draft picks for 2014
20. I never believed the Furcal signing would amount to much, he is too fragile and too old. I however agree Dietrich needed to be sent down, 8 error in 40 games is unacceptable. He needs to settle down defensively. He needs to regain his confidence because a lot of it is in the mind. I hope Furcal can give the Marlins a little bit of performance until Dietrich can come back up. If not it will have to be Lucas/Solano until then. I like Lucas but he is far from an everyday starter
21. McGehee allows extra patience with Moran who will be up in September
22. I was thinking Lucas should be the starter at 2nd until Dietrich comes back up now we gotta give Furval playing time
23. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2089667-2014-mlb-draft-grades-final-report-cards-for-all-30-teams/page/16 Grade: B+ The Miami Marlins were happy to grab RHP Tyler Kolek, the draft's hardest thrower, with the second overall pick on Day 1, but they followed the pickup with a pair of questionable selections in defense-oriented catcher Blake Anderson (No. 36) and ultra-athletic SS Justin Twine (No. 43). Miami continued to grab high-end athletes on Day 2 of the draft, including Arkansas 2B Brian Anderson (third round), California prep CF Casey Soltis (fifth) and a potential steal in OF Stone Garrett (eighth). They also snuck in a pair of potential back-end starters at the end of the day, selecting Oregon State LHP Ben Wetzler in the ninth round followed by Texas LHP Dillon Peters in the 10th. Day 3 of the draft saw the Marlins take a flier on several notable prep prospects in RHP Nick White (11th), Puerto Rican catcher Roy Morales (12th), SS Zach Sullivan (14th) and RHP Jordan Holloway (20th).
24. Isn't kolek 17? Born on 12/5/1995, he is 18
25. The other question is, who gets sent down when Kevin Gregg comes up? :| Isn't Gregg getting bitched slapped by minor league hitters right now?
