NL MVP
If it doesn't have a Marlin in it it's no good! Pujols, Beltran, Howard...all are fine. But you can't have two players who play the same position in the same league and division have one player LEAD IN EVERY QUANTIFIABLE STATISTIC ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL and not be mentioned in favor of the inferior. I completely agree. Wright hasn't done much since the All-Star break. As far as value to a team, I just can't think of anyone more important than Cabs has been for the Marlins. I'll say this: If Miguel puts up the same numbers in Sept. that he did in August, and the Marlins make the WC, he wins MVP. For fun, let's pull up the stats of Cabs and Wright post All-Star game: Cabs: BA: .343 Hits: 57 2B: 19 3B: 1 HR: 8 RBI: 37 BB: 18 SO: 30 OBP: .417 SLG: .614 OPS: 1.031 Wright: BA: .262 Hits: 39 2B: 10 3B: 1 HR: 3 RBI: 27 BB: 18 SO: 33 OPB: .345 SLG: .403 OPS: .748 :whistle

Marlins/Cabrera Article on ESPN.com
M-V-P M-V-P It would be nice if the stadium would actually chant that. I tried yesterday and was met with "Carlos Beltran?" f***ing South Florida. It's hard being a fan of Florida teams in South Florida, isn't it? It's immensely irritating sometimes.

Marlins/Cabrera Article on ESPN.com
Thanks for the article! I found some more MVP-loving for Miggy at cnnsi.com: CNNSI.com Surprise NL award candidates "Yes, Ryan Howard has thrust himself into the NL MVP debate thanks to his incendiary August, joining Albert Pujols and Carlos Beltran in the race. But what about Miguel Cabrera? The Marlins' third baseman deserves to be included in the discussion. The 23-year-old, who would be the youngest NL MVP winner since Johnny Bench (22 in 1970), is the best player on baseball's biggest surprise team. He leads the NL in OBP and ranks second in hitting, fourth in OPS and sixth in slugging and RBIs." :thumbup

Cabrera getting some MVP love
Should have gotten MVP consideration last year too, and probably would have been talked about more if the team hadn't gone in the tank. Plus he and Delgado split the Marlin votes. It'd be awesome if Cabs got MVP chants every time he batted. Umm, I'm pretty sure Cabs was like 3rd or 4th in MVP voting last year. People that read BP don't need to be told about Cabrera's ability, they're the hardcore of hardcore fans. I doubt he was that close. He was the 3rd best player on the team. Huh? The 3rd best player? I know Delgado was among the MVP candidates, but he was definitely below Cabs. Still trying to figure out which 2 players on the team were better than Miggy. :confused

Player of the Month?
When it comes to MVP, people like to look at homers and RBI. No doubt Howard is having a monster season, as is Beltran and Pujols (doesn't he always?). But put these guys in Cabs' position this yr, and I don't think they produce the way Miguel has. No one has meant more to his team this year than Cabrera. His numbers have been so consistent, particularly with RISP (.380). Hell, he's batting .389 w/ 2-out and RISP! And to do it all without protection in the lineup, is amazing. .340? Unreal. Take Beltran out of the Mets' lineup, and they still have a winning team. What would happen if they took Cabs out of the Marlins' lineup? (Besides, Cabs is batting 55 points higher than Beltran). If the Marlins make the playoffs, and Miggy continues his hot hitting, he has to be considered a strong MVP candidate. :thumbup

How would you rank Miggy?
While all of this is well and good, most will look at this and say "That proves nothing, these stats provide me with absolutely no basis for comparison." To hopefully provide some frame of reference, I dug up the statistics for Gold Glove 3rd baseman. How are those fringe stats calculated? The fringe stats you provided prove nothing, at least to me, unless you include the methodology used to calculate them and then only if the methodology follows a logical approach. Cabrera is the best 3B in baseball and overall is one of the top handful of hitters in the game but I've watched him play about 85% of his games this season and if he's a good defensive 3B, as you're alluding, then my eyeballs are lying to me. In my opinion the best defensive stat to use is Zone Rating and Cabrera ranks 18th out of 22 MLB 3B in ZR and that jibes with what my eyeballs have watched so far this season. Polo, Wouldn't you agree, however, that Cabs has improved dramatically during the season defensively? The majority of his errors came early on. He's made some very nice plays, and I think he will improve next year (needs to come into camp in shape!)

Cabrera 'was born to hit'
If they dont sign Cabrera because of "market" correction, Loria and Midget Sampson can go f*** themselves. I'd be done with this petty franchise. You just dont f***ing let a legendary talent like Cabrera walk away. :thumbup

9 In a Row is now over
And it's really nice to see Jacobs (and even Hermida) starting to hit again.
-
Monday lineups: Hermida in the 8 hole
Didn't think I'd ever see that, but it's where he ought to be. Either hit him there or bench him for a while. I was going to invite you to be my friend on myspace... until I went to your page, and heard that Seminole chant. (Go Canes!!!)
-
Where's the offense???
Umm, is there anyone else in the Marlins' lineup besides Cabrera? :confused We need Jacobs and Willingham to step it up. Not to mention Hermida, and anyone else at the bottom of that lineup! BTW, what do you guys think about Cabs winning his 2nd Silver Slugger?

Official Ryan Howard for MVP Thread
As I posted on the Marlins' board, Howard, while having a monster season, is not coming through w/ RISP. (As of yesterday, batting only .238 w/ RISP and .194 w/ RISP and 2 out). My guess is that it will be Beltran, even though I agree that the Mets would still be a good team without him.

RISP OBP
I'm not saying Miguel hasn't been hitting well with RISP (he has been great this year) but his RISP OBP is inflated due to IBB's and pitcher's pitching around him with a runner on second and first base open. Absolutely true. Knowing that teams are pitching around him, though, especially with RISP, and he's still batting .380 in these situations, is pretty amazing. Here's something to ponder: Ryan Howard, who is a beast, is only batting .238 w/ RISP, including .194 with 2-out and RISP. So even though he has 41 HR and over 100 ribbies, is he really more productive than Cabs this yr??? :mischief2 GREAT STATS :notworthy Thanks! I'm a statistical nerd. Especially abnormal since I'm a girl.

RISP OBP
Another amazing statistic is Miggy's OBP w/ 2-outs and RISP: .565!!!!! :o This eliminates any fielder's choices in that OBP. BTW, Cabrera is batting .386 w/ 2-out and RISP. :notworthy

Could Cabs win the batting title?
If things continue the way they are going, it's going to be hard for Cabs to catch up to Sanchez this late in the season. I mean, Miggy had 3 hits yesterday, and his average rose only 3 points! Cabrera needs to stay hot, and Sanchez needs to cool off considerably. That being said, it's definitely a possibility. :thumbup

RISP OBP
http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/stats/indivi...p;sitSplit1=rsp What is the record for OBP with RISP for a season for a marlins player? I think miggy is going to break it. Before todays big time game Miggy was at .514 which is pretty much sick. I wonder who the league leader is in this category?

Lineups: Amezaga is back
Am I the only one who likes Amezaga? I think he's an extremely valuable utility man. He doesn't have a great bat, but he's played 5 different positions for us this year, and he's got great speed. He seems to be solid defensively when he plays the infield.

Could Cabs win the batting title?
who's his competition, besides Sanchez? Here's a list of the current batting leaders: 1. F Sanchez .342 2. M Cabrera .334 3. C Jones .333 4. N Garciaparra .328 5. C Utley .328 6. S Hatteberg .326 And Chipper's been at .333 for quite a while; I believe he is still on the 15-day DL. Should be interesting. And, yes, it would be incredible if he won... considering his lack of protection in the lineup.

Could Cabs win the batting title?
Cabrera is now second in the NL in batting average (.334), just behind the pesky Freddy Sanchez (.342). What a beautiful thing it would be if Miggy would win the batting title this year. :thumbup He's an incredibly mature, unselfish and disciplined hitter. He could have easily been swinging for the fences at a lot of bad pitches this yr, but he's gone with what pitchers have given him, which has brought his power numbers down. (still hoping he reaches 30 HR) Good little article on Cabs in Miami Herald: MARLINS NOTEBOOK Cabrera is adjusting well BY CLARK SPENCER cspencer@MiamiHerald.com Extra-careful pitchers have managed to diminish Miguel Cabrera's home run production, but the Marlins' top hitter has found other ways to inflict damage. ''They're pitching around me a lot, so I'm hitting what they give me,'' said Cabrera, who went into Wednesday with the third-highest average (.332) in the National League. ``I'm not hitting as many home runs, but that's all right.'' After hitting 33 home runs each of the previous two years, Cabrera is on pace to finish this season with 24. But he has improved in several other key categories. He ranks third in the NL with a .426 on-base percentage and sixth with a .979 OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage). Only Barry Bonds has received more intentional walks, 33, than Cabrera's 22. Cabrera also should exceed 100 RBI for the third straight season. ''He's an unbelievable hitter to watch,'' said Marlins manager Joe Girardi, who predicts Cabrera still will end up hitting 30 home runs. ``He just takes what pitchers give him. And if you're not going to give him a pitch to hit out of the ballpark, he's not going to try to hit it out.'' Girardi said he expects pitchers to ease up a little on Cabrera in the future. ''As our [other] hitters mature, I think that will change,'' Girardi said. ``I think you'll have to pitch to him more because the other guys will have a little bit more of a reputation.'' Go Mig!

Marlins' All-Time Web Gems
Remember Chuck Carr? Say what you will about his defense (I know he always missed the cut-off man and was a bit wild out there), but he made some spectacular catches. I particularly remember one he made in the inaugural year with the bases loaded late in the game: he dove, catching the ball with his arm stretched over his head. Unbelievable catch. If any of you guys have the 1993 year in review video, a segment was made called "Chuck Carr's Top 10 Catches of '93."

Whiff Whiff: Whiff
Well, if anything, Miggy got back on track. :thumbup Amazing how a pitcher throwing wildly to 2nd base (and advancing Amezaga to 3rd) actually hurt us tonight because after that it was a no-brainer to walk Cabrera. We've seen these situations with the Marlins before: It's late in a close game, leadoff man gets base hit, and Cabrera is due up 3rd. It makes you almost not want to bunt the runner over to 2nd because if you do so successfully, the opposing team will most likely intentionally walk Cabs or pitch around him.

First-Half MVP
I voted for Cabrera. I'm new to the forums, and I'm so glad I found you guys! The official Web site's message boards are just dreadful: lots of idiotic Mets' fans and even some immature Marlins' fans arguing back and forth. It's nice to see real baseball fans with something coherent to say! :thumbup ETA: It was a disgrace that Miggie and Uggla didn't get an AB. And why the hell did Beltran play the whole game? Starters should not be getting 3 ABs in the All-Star game. The perfect time to bring Cabs in was in the 7th, when Wright was due up to bat for the 3rd time.
