July 18, 200521 yr 860923 I saw that quote. He said "ideally," but not necessarily. 860924 http://news.cincypost.com/apps/pbcs.dll/ar...ate=printpicart Leland won't talk about Reds job By Marc Lancaster Post staff reporter DETROIT - Tuesday afternoon, a few hours before the first pitch at the All-Star Game, Jim Leyland sat in the visiting manager's office at Comerica Park, chatting with Tony La Russa. The Cardinals' manager was in uniform, while Leyland wore the scout's typical attire - slacks and a Tommy Bahama shirt. That has been Leyland's uniform for five years now, ever since he left the dugout in Colorado and became a special assignment scout for the Cardinals. But it sounds as if Leyland might be ready to switch wardrobes again. "In the right situation, I would be interested," said Leyland. "But I'm certainly not going back for a paycheck." He was in the mix for the Phillies' managerial opening after last season, and seemed to be the overwhelming choice of the public. That job went to Charlie Manuel, but now that it's known Leyland has an urge to return to managing, his name figures to surface for more jobs. It has already been thrown around quite a bit in Cincinnati in the wake of Dave Miley's firing last month. But as Leyland was quick to point out Tuesday without being asked specifically about the Reds, there isn't currently an opening in Cincinnati or anywhere else in baseball. Jerry Narron may be the interim manager, but he's the manager just the same. "Right now, it's not an issue because all the jobs are filled," said Leyland. "I just won't discuss a job at this time because I have too much respect for the managerial position. I don't think that's very ethical to talk about a managerial position when somebody has it. I managed a long time and I'm pretty proud of the managerial position no matter who has it." That said, Leyland has done nothing to indicate he wouldn't be interested in a return, and his resume probably will be appealing to the Reds, among other teams that might have a vacancy after the season. Despite his losing record (1,069-1,131) in 14 seasons as a big-league manager, Leyland has a reputation as a winner. He won three consecutive division titles with the Pirates in the early 1990s and led the upstart Marlins to a World Series championship in 1997, only to see the team dismantled before the following season, a 108-loss debacle. Avoiding a mess like that last year in Florida and the one season he spent in Colorado with a 72-90 record before retiring has a lot to do with the "right situation" Leyland was talking about. But it isn't the only factor. Leyland, who turns 61 in December, continues to make his home in the Pittsburgh area and has said he would like to remain within reasonable distance if he was to take another managing job. "Preferably, I'd like to stay somewhere where I could get home in a matter of a few hours or a 45-minute-to-an-hour flight, something like that," he said. "That'd be perfect. But you talk about perfect situations - they don't come along very often."
July 18, 200521 yr I think having Niner as a player manager would be fantastic. That's unbelievably cool. When was the last time we've seen that in MLB? I also really like the idea of Tony Pena. I think his easygoing personality would fit this team perfectly right now. Trade rumors, whispers of firings, and magnified pressure to perfom, all have this team wound tight as a drum. Conine should ease the tension too.
July 18, 200521 yr 860923 Oh G-d, please let it mean he will be the next manager of the Pirates! That is, if not the Marlins. Damn this dual loyalty I must now accept.
July 18, 200521 yr I've said it before, here's my list, in order: 1. Jim Leyland 2. Tony Pena 3. Carlos Tosca

July 18, 200521 yr Fire Jack. Trade Lowell and AJ. Move Cabs to 3rd and Niner to LF. Get a replacement for AJ. Do it. 860854 Sounds like a Nike commercial.

I don't think he said they were not in the running.

July 18, 200521 yr Sorry for all the posts about him. But I knew that after today's game- McKeon would be fired. It will happen.
July 18, 200521 yr I say Lou Brown. But seriously, I like the Conine idea or maybe Tony Perez. Or Me! I'm available and I need a job.
July 18, 200521 yr I dont like Fregosi. Never have. And while we are throwing out names here is one for you.... Davey Johnson Leyland is going to end up back home with the Pirates soon enough. Tony Pena will be a good manager in this league, hard to do anything with that joke of a franchise in Kansas City. And while we are talking about our old managers, why not just bring back Rene Lachemann or John Boles?
