As the Royals season has already begun and ended this year in the span of two weeks, I'm thinking that they have now solidly put themselves in the proverbial ass crack of the sports world as the worst franchise in all of sports.

The Los Angeles Clippers did have that dubious distiction in my book before this year but they are on the upswing and made the playoffs this year in the tough West.

The Arizona Cardinals would look to be a team that would move up on this list, but they too are on the upswing. Have gotten better under Denny Green and signed a top 3 RB in the NFL in Edgerin James.

Thoughts? Disagree/Agree? Others that could/do compete with them?

They're certainly up there, as you said, the Cards and Clippers are on the upswing, the Royals are not. Man they suck..

I don't know if I can go that far just because there was such a proud tradition there.

For me, it'd have to be a perennial cellar dwellar like the DRays...just everything about that franchise is gloomy, except for it's stability, lol.

The bottom 5 (all of sports, not in order):

DRays

Rockies

Arizona Cardinals

Pittsburgh Penguins

Atlanta Hawks

Devil Rays. Have they ever even sniffed the playoffs?

Hell, they've never even sniffed third place and only finished out of the cellar once in 8 seasons.

The D-Rays get somewhat of a pass from me because of their expansion just 8 years ago and they are somewhat competitive this season and the last 2 (the records aren't good but at least it seems they are hording and building talent). Especially considering the division they are in.

Hawks are a good one. Piss poor.

I don't think you can put the Penguins in there considering they went to the Eastern Conference semi finals in 00-01 and if you gave a pass to the Royals for being good in the 80s, the Penguins deserve as much and more for winning the Cup in '92.

The fact that this team has fallen so far the last 15 years should rank them near the top on this list. Takes a really inempt owner and a real bad FO to run a team that was an AL powerhouse into the ground.

the royals were above .500 in 2003 in the race until the last week or so.

they were also very close to .500 playing respectible baseball in 2000.

The Royals just need to start being smart and doing what Milwaukee has done. They have a nice stadium and a good fan base, that with some more winning will definitely show up in droves.

Hopefully Alex Gordon makes it to the bigs soon and they can build around him, he is a stud in waiting.

If Grienke can return and not be nutty, they have a good pitcher to build around also.

I thought they did a real good job in the offseason, they wont be this bad all year and could be somewhere close to .500 potentially. At worse, they can hopefully get a couple of good pieces for the veterans they signed in the offseason.

I get what your saying here, but on the flip side the other team from that expansion has made multiple playoff trips and won a world series already.

The Royals are the worst, easily.

Their management has no idea. They are rebuilding, but to do that, you need to go young. Why did they buy Sanders and Grudzie for a hefty price when they're gonna suck anyway? Put in the youngsters and give them experience. They have no idea how to bring through the youngsters. Their farm system is non-existant, besides DeJesus and Grienke they haven't had any good prospects for a couple of years. I couldn't even name a few of their minor league prospects now, but I could for every other team.

The D-Rays may have sucked, but in a few years they'll be really good, as much as us Marlins fans may hate to admit. They have some sick hitters coming through. Their pitching is still obviously a question though.

In comparison to both of the aforementioned franchises, it's great to sit back and think how we're in such a better position than either of them. We may suck for the next year or so, but we'll have such a bright future with the way we've stockpiled prospects, especially pitching. Building from the bottom up with pitching is the way to build a franchise, without question.

For a hypothetical: the Yankees look old. If they were to trade away all of their stars save a few like A-Rod and Jeter, they would get some amazing prospects back. Imagine what you could get for guys like Johnson, Rivera, Giambi, Sheff, etc. Sure, they'd be on a losing streak for a few years (which is exactly why they'd never do it) but in the long run they'd dominate just like they did the mid-late 90's. It's a proven theory.

I remember the Ottawa Senators and TB Lightning being the doormat of the NHL for the longest time. Royals haven't been decent since George Brett.

how dare you leave out the Golden St. Warriors

The worst team in all sports is surely in Pittsburgh, but it isn't the Penguins.

Since Sid Bream's dash, the Pirates have had 13 consecutive losing seasons and are well on their way to a 14th. Outside Bay, Duke, and the Wilsons, everything about the team, from the big-league club to the farm, sucks. But hey, they have a nice stadium on the riverfront and periodically fill the stadium for things that go boom (and I'm talking about fireworks, not home runs). That said, I'll probably be putting money into the Nuttings' and McClatchy's moneygrubbing pockets next weekend when the Pu$$ies come to town.

The Savior is coming. :notworthy :notworthy :notworthy

He's not alone either, at least offensively. I like Maier, Huber, Bianchi, McConnell, Lubanski, Murphy and Kaaihue a lot.

The Royals seem to be finally getting the system together it seems. They need to focus on pitching.

speaking out of performance golden state blows. they havent had a winning year in a while nor done anything worthy in decades

I have always sorta like the Royals. Hopefully they start to put together some good solid youngsters and turn things around like the Brewers have.

yeah same here

but those guys they had to supposedly build something around with turned out to be pretty poopy or they have yet to reach at least a partial league average potential

Runelvys Hernandes and Zack Greinke for starters

If we're talking about now, probably.

History wise, no. They were the model franchise in the '70's. And the Pirates are pretty pathetic today also.

"In 2001, the Pirates drafted an apparent nonprospect from Utah in the 33rd round.

That year, he hit .305 for Williamsport.

The next year, he hit .340 with 17 home runs in 93 games for Hickory.

In 2003, he hit .359 with 21 home runs in 95 games for Lynchburg.

The Pirates didn't protect him on their 40-man roster that offseason, and the Detroit Tigers drafted this nonprospect in the Rule 5 draft for $50,000.

Chris Shelton is hitting .479 with eight home runs in his red-hot April for the Tigers."

Well, the argument is for today. As of right now who would you say is the worst franchise.

They had a 19 game losing streak last year. They already have a 10 game going...14 games into this year. No team is that bad right now, imo.

I think it's really close between the Royals and Pirates. Neither team seems to have any future hope right now, even though the Pirates have a nice new stadium. The Atlanta Hawks and Chicago Blackhawks are the worst non-baseball franchises.

The D-Rays have a lot more hope in the future than the Royals and Pirates do, as far as I'm concerned.

The Royals might be in the bottom five, but I don't think they are the worst.

My bottom five:

Arizona Cardinals (signing Edgerrin James doesn't mean s*** until they actually win something. In my mind, they are the worst. One playoff appearance in the past 30 years seals the deal.)

New Orleans Saints

Atlanta Hawks

Tampa Bay Devil Rays (though they haven't been around very long)

Kansas City Royals

Honorable mention: Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, Colorado Rockies, Golden State Warriors, L.A. Clippers (though they might come off this list soon)

The Knicks are a MUCH bigger joke right now than the Hawks.

Devil Rays had one of the best records in the league after the All-Star break last season, and they're playing .500 now in the most competetive division in baseball.

i say the Royals are the biggest joke in sports, though.
