stop talking about this already. I don't think he is going to be traded and even if he is the chances of us getting him are slim to none. The best bet for us is to go after Carl Crawford.

Why?

For the most part this has been a relatively healthy discussion. It's a lot better than some of the mind numbing discussions that go on sometimes.

Because it is unrealistic, that's Why. Don't get me wrong I would really like to see A-Rod in a Marlins uniform, but I just don't think is going to happen. The Yankees said there going to listen to offers, but Cashman said he wants to see A-Rod back next season.

Well....he'd probably do a lot better than Willy did at catcher, or any other position he's played at. But saying someone will be a better defensive player than Willy isn't saying much. Anyway, if the deal was to go down, I'd think that Cabs would move to first base where he'd likely be better at than he is at third. We'd have the best offensive infield in MLB, and a horrible defensive outfield(again).

Sure, Cabs had a bad April in the field, but he is an outstanding 3B and there it no reason not to play him at 3B. A-Rod is a gold-glove SS, so no reason not to play him there. Hanley is fast as all hell and has a strong arm and isn't dumb as a box of rocks (like Abercrombie) so there is no reason why he wouldn't make at least a passable CF. That said, I'd just as soon acquire Crawford for a lesser price.

What?! Do you even know if Cabs can play first?!

No. But I also don't know that Hanley can play CF. And first base is a lot easier to play than center. Generally, first base is a good place to put a sub-par defensive player. Cabs fits that category. It may not be refelcted in errors, but how many balls got past him because he just doesn't have that good first move, or a very good throw. Statistics can lie. RFerry spent half of last season telling me that his super-duper stats said that Cabs was better than Lowell at third :confused . If you look at just errors it tells you that Willy was ok in LF, while anyone who watched the games objectively saw that he was a stumbling bumbling fielder. I believe my lying eyes and not the stats. I love him offensively, but defensively he's meh.

And in response to the other statement, being fast doesn't mean you're going to be a good center fielder, or a good NFL wide receiver for that matter. There are other skills involved. And as for being "dumb as a box of rocks", I don't know that IQ counts at all. And it's just an assumption to think that Hanley is smarter than Reggie. Reggie may be a genius, but he can't field. Hanley may be a moron, but it looks like he can play SS at the MLB level. If IQ counted we'd be drafting out of the Ivy League schools.

Good post. The super-duper stats comment made me crack up.

Is Hanley playing winter ball this winter? Maybe he can work on his CF skills before Spring Training :lol .

I don't see how you can really complain too much about Cabrera's post-diet fielding this season. The only starter who bested Cabrera defensively was Uggla, but that is not saying much. Our fielding was terrible almost everywhere you looked this season. And statistically compared to all leftfielders (who played LF in 108 games or more) in MLB, Willingham had 3rd worst fielding percentage (.968), 4th worst range factor (1.78) and was nearly the worst zone rating (.790), with only Manny having a worse zone rating.

Your lying eyes are only slightly more reliable than error stats, range is a much more telling stat. Cabrera, outside of his awful April (I think it was because he was fat), was just fine at 3B this year.

All that said... I still think the team should just cut to the chase and get a CF like Crawford.

Cabrera wasn't fantastic at third base, and people on this board aren't going to be happy until everyone is perfect.

Seriously though, Idle speculation can be fun, and we have a long time before spring training. Hell, we have weeks before anyone is able to trade/sign anyone.

Guys can't we just trade Jacobs for bullpen pieces, Put willingham at 1st base, trade for arod, place him at third base and move Miguelito back to left field?

close... ARod at SS :thumbup

I think the biggest thing that makes an A-Rod deal unrealistic is his no-trade clause. Not the clause being used to block a trade from the Yanks to the Marlins, but from the Marlins to other teams.

Lets just hope a stadium deal gets in place this offseason, that way our payroll might climb up to the mid twentys and absorbing a 10-12 mil deal wouldnt be bad at all.

I'd personally love to know that Cabrera was going to be at third base as a Marlin for the rest of his career. He's not perfect, but he's more than acceptable. It's not the nature of the game to expect perfection. I've never seen or heard of even one MLB player who was perfect. It's a balance between offensive production and an acceptable level of defensive miscues. With Cabs, his offense definitely outweighs his occassional defensive error. With other players, like Willy, his offense is very good, but it's a close call to balance his very good offense with his deplorable defense. But, let's give him at least another year before coming to any conclusions. In fact, in Willy's case, as his offense looks so promising, let's give him another 2 years.

And first base is a lot easier to play than center. Generally, first base is a good place to put a sub-par defensive player. Cabs fits that category.

Ask Gary Sheffield how easy is it to play 1B (Hope you watched the mess there the Yankees had vs Detroit).

Cabrera is not sub-par. He may never be a gold glover, but that cannon he has makes a lot of plays that others wouldn't, and it would be wasted at 1B. And it's not like we have a better 3B now, nor would we have one if we traded for A-Rod.

Good idea, but where do we place Hanley.

CF

i heard on espn that Yankees wont get go of ARod last night. he going part of team in 2007

they HAVE to say that

Good idea, but where do we place Hanley.

CF

because putting a SS in CF worked so well this season.

debby downer? :whistle

Who do you want in CF?

I don't know, maybe someone with at least an inning of work at some professional level in CF?

Ideally a career CFer, be they an established player via a trade, a Free Agent, or even a decent prospect we trade for. I love Hanley, but there's no need to force him out of his comfort zone in the IF. If the Phillies can pull out someone like Victorino in Rowand's absence and the Nationals can find Nook Logan then surely there has to be some decent CF prospects out there who actually play CF.

Hanley has played CF before in winter ball. Hanley would be more than capable in CF.

lol Nook Logan
