well this is insane. My fear would be that Loria pulls another Delgado.

I'd hate to send away a lot of our young pitchers, but ARod's one of those rare players where EVERYTHING is on the table.

I disagree that 2006 was the real Dontrelle and that 2005 was just a mirage. I don't feel he's a #1 ace, but I think the real Dontrelle is somewhere between the '05 and '06 versions. Still talking about a terrific pitcher.

If Dontrelle had early season run support and a decent bullpen late season, he'd have won 18+ and be a Cy Young Contender.

While that's true, he also had the most starts on the team and finished at .500 while four other pitchers showed that it's not impossible to win with this group.

I don't want to trade Dontrelle, he's durable, good and beloved in the locker room and community, but he's not an ace.

An ace doesn't have a solid team around him and struggle to be a .500 pitcher. An ace doesn't have the highest WHIP of all the main rotation starters.

Dontrelle didn't strugle to be a .500 starter. His ERA is more than a run less than the team's runs per game, his .500 record is a fluke.

jumping the gun with Volstad

more likely Garcia, Petit, Bostick or Pinto

I was jumping the gun with Sanchez and Nalasco last year. Volstad had a 99:36 K:BB ratio, the kid can pitch and isn't really far away.

DTrain pitched and deserved better than a 12-12 record but the defense behind him early in the season was horrific and he got poor run support all year long. There are better ways of judging a starter than won / loss record and DTrain's '06 season is a case in point. The poor defense also negatively impacted his ERA and WHIP.

How were you jumping the gun with Nolasco? He had just dominated the Southern League and there wasnt one person who didnt think he would see action with the big club in 2007. Oh yea, he was also 23.

Anibal was 22 and had his 2nd season in AA.

Volstad will be 20 and hasnt spend a day above low A ball. He shouldnt see any time next year, barring unseen circumstances

Correct. Guy got brutal run support early on (in fact he lead the NL for a while in worst run support)

Volstad is going to start the season in AA (which is where the Marlins call up their pitchers from) and if he has a really good season start he will be up if there are injuries/struggles. I think Garcia is a more likely pitcher to get the job out of spring training if we trade one of our current starters.

I see no reason why Chris would completely jump high-A Jupiter.

Volstad is not ready...he definitely is still very hittable. From what I've seen he is missing that strikeout pitch. I imagine it will come along. He still has amazing stuff and has a ridiculous GB/FB ratio, but I can't possibly see him ready before 2008. Same goes with the rest of the fab 5.

Point.

If it's anyone, it's going to be Gaby in. And that's still a stretch unless he just dominates.

Yeah, Carolina sees a lot of callups, but Jupiter is also the most important stop along the way (I'm not going to search for the article, but I recall many executives in the organization saying that Jupiter is the most important level for the young talent).

There's no way you have Volstad SKIP JUPITER to end up in the majors. No way.

First of all, Hanley is fine in CF. No worries. ...

First of all, there is no guarantees of Hanley succeeding in CF. He hasn't played OF at all in A, AA, or AAA. Let alone the hardest OF position, and to top it off, at a place like Dolphins Stadium.

You don't get ARod if you are not contending.

Was Texas ever contending when they had him? Do you honestly think the Yankees wouldn't be able to contend without him?

Moehler, Mitre, and Petit is who you bring up to replace Dontrelle?Ownership would easily go out and obtain a 5th starter from somewhere else and not deal with the those clowns, plus obtain bullpen/bench help to create a team. That is chump change compared to A-Rod, and it would signal organizational change in payroll. The Marlins can easily fill all their needs via free agency, sign Cabrera to a 7 year mega contract, and still be in the $40

If it was all that easy it would be done. But obtaining a 5th (usually veteran) Starter to replace a lost young arm had brought us the likes of Valdez, Moehler, & Leiter, and I hope I don't need to tell you the success rate that strategy has had here. I'd rather keep our rotation 5 strong and all young.

Let's just stick Hanley Ramirez, a player with no outfield experience whatsoever in center field at a stadium like Dolphin Stadium. He'll be fine. No worries.

I think he means that you don't get A-Rod if you don't intend to contend.

I happen to think that Hanley has the talent to play CF, but I am more inclined to acquire a guy like Crawford.

Well....he'd probably do a lot better than Willy did at catcher, or any other position he's played at. But saying someone will be a better defensive player than Willy isn't saying much. Anyway, if the deal was to go down, I'd think that Cabs would move to first base where he'd likely be better at than he is at third. We'd have the best offensive infield in MLB, and a horrible defensive outfield(again).

I believe Hanley has played CF in the AFL or maybe the winter leagues

I think that was just a short lived experiment after the Renteria signing.

Not that this is relevant to his ability in center or lack thereof, but he went right back to short in 2005 with the Portland Sea Dogs.

Sure, Cabs had a bad April in the field, but he is an outstanding 3B and there it no reason not to play him at 3B. A-Rod is a gold-glove SS, so no reason not to play him there. Hanley is fast as all hell and has a strong arm and isn't dumb as a box of rocks (like Abercrombie) so there is no reason why he wouldn't make at least a passable CF. That said, I'd just as soon acquire Crawford for a lesser price.

Payroll will be nowhere near that high this year. As has been stated. Saying it could be in the $25 mil range at this point is really pushing it.

Why would Cabrera be better at 1B? And why would we want to replace him at 3B with the AL leader in errors at 3B this season? Cabrera isn't that bad a 3B. A-Rod was his league's worst starting 3B.

And does it make sense to spend all this money and still end up with horrible OF defense? Don't you think priority should go to fixing the problems before just adding extras "just because"?

What?! Do you even know if Cabs can play first?!

Question for Lou or someone else...

I think DTrain has 3 more arbitration years and ARod has 4 years left in his Yankee contract. My question is if we were to sign DTrain to a 4 year contract how much money are we looking at? I guess I'm trying to determine how much ARod money the Yankees need to eat to make ARod and DTrain a wash money wise.

ive read in a couple places that Hickman's off the hook if ARod is traded from the Yankees....doesnt bode well. Id still absolutely love to get him.

I would say we could sign a 4 year contract anywhere from $35-$45 million. $35 would be a "Marlins discount" type of deal, $45 should be a sure thing, but we may never know the answer if the Marlins trade Dontrelle before even making him an offer.

stop talking about this already. I don't think he is going to be traded and even if he is the chances of us getting him are slim to none. The best bet for us is to go after Carl Crawford.

Why?

For the most part this has been a relatively healthy discussion. It's a lot better than some of the mind numbing discussions that go on sometimes.
