The scout said "frankly, the marlins would have to be out of their collective minds to move that kid out of SS at this point in time. He has all the tools and he just isn't focusing right now. He is certainly a player that will try to improve, he wants to be the best"

 

And from the Marlins org: "There has been no discussion about moving Hanley. He is an all star caliber defender at SS and that's where we see him for the foreseeable future"

To be honest the defensive issues are at every position.

 

From top to bottom this might be the worst defensive unit we've ever had. Or at least they're playing that way.

 

I mean go right down the line, is there a single player we have that you'd consider above-average defensively? Not a single one.

 

It's pretty blatant when you've gotten used to watching Lee-Castillo-Gonzalez-Lowell to this.

 

I really wonder how the team, so far, stacks up against the lower tiers deffensives of all time (And I don't mean the default 8, but everyone who's played there. I.E. center is a combination of Alfredo's playtime, De Aza's, Reggie's, Ross, somebody else I'm probably missing).

 

But like you said, it also might have to be that we're just used to above-average deffenses, and it's not as bad as being percieved.

I think it's hard to single out Ramirez for poor defensive play. Because I don't think the Marlins have an above average defensive player at any position on the field.

When constructing a team you can choose offensive-minded players, defensive-minded players or ones that do a bit of both. Jacobs, Uggla, Hanley, Miguel, Hammer and Hermida are all without a doubt offensive-minded players first so it should come as no surprise that we're a poor defensive team. Regarding Hanley, I think he's the CF of the future. It's just a matter of when the switch will take place. I think it'll be next season.

Hanley's defense is a problem without a short-term solution. I don't think you switch a guy like him out to CF(in our stadium especially), in the middle of the season. LF maybe, but not center. Maybe he'll improve, though the comparisons to Gonzo's defensive problems in his first 2 seasons are not valid. Gonzo showed many flashes of defensive brilliance, mixed in with some learning curve errors. Hanley shows the same learning curve errors, but no flashes of brilliance. Maybe he'll improve, or maybe he'll find himself in LF next year or the year after.

On the play in question last night. The manager is partly to blame. Infield should have been in in that situation. You can't trade a double play for a run in a 1-1 game in the 9th. In hindsight, it would have made for an easier throw, or the ball would have been caught on the fly.

Regarding Hanley, I think he's the CF of the future. It's just a matter of when the switch will take place. I think it'll be next season.

Boog talked a little bit about this the other day. How Cabrera's gonna eventually need to be a first baseman due to lack of mobility. He then said that the player likely to take over at third would probably be Hanley, being that he too has outgrown his position, yet is still athletic enough to bend over to make athletic plays at third.

This is ridiculous. Hanley will stay at SS. He is very gifted, and short stop arguably is the toughest infield position to capture as a young major leaguer. He will be fine.

 

I mean what are you gonna do? Amezaga? Andino? That's insane.

Im not gonna lie and say that everything is fine. This defense has been downright horrendous for quite some time, miggy looks lazy, our double play combo just isnt talented enough (although out of the two Uggla has been the one that at least looks like he is giving it 100% out there) at first we have a sloth in jacobs and the OF ... well it just not a MLB caliber OF, unfortunatly, we havent had much discipline and stability there besides Willingham in left, who we have gotten used to regardless of his defensive mishaps.

 

It kind reminds me of the situation of the Red Sox a couple of years back when they brough in Doug M. to play first and a different SS (who I can think of at this point) well it was addition by substraction, they lost a run or two from their bats but gained them in better played defense. The outcome? ... a world series title.But 1) they didnt have to move their pieces around and 2) we dont have the $$$ to go out and buy/trade/sign whoever we want.

 

Now my stance will always remain the same, be consistent in what you do and the results will come. so I really dont buy into shifting the whole IF around to hopefully get better.

But I can see how those that dislike Olivo so much would rather put the blame on him.

But it is pretty much universally recognized that Olivo is awful defensively. And while I didnt see the play, the majority have said that while the throw wasnt perfect it was more than catchable. And quite frankly it doesnt surprise me.
