March 27, 200818 yr Last year the guy's ST numbers were (so far as I know) a suprise and he won the starting CF job only to get injured a week or so into the season. This year again he is among our best hitters in ST, now near the top in slugging and obp, and doing so while also having close to the most ABs as well. So my question is to those who've seen him this spring - has he changed much from last season to explain the slugging and overall hitting? Does anyone expect him to keep this up at any level during the regular season? Because honestly, if he can put up those sorts of numbers vs RHP and platoon with Cody in CF, and they both stay consistent, we really wouldn't have to rush Maybin at all.
March 27, 200818 yr I think he played more than 1 week (5-6 weeks as I recall) last season and looked pretty good
March 27, 200818 yr if he starts walking again, like he did in the minors, he could probably put up a .340 OBP....350 OBP being optimistic. That's pretty solid. But his walk % took a huge drop in the majors last year.
March 28, 200818 yr Yea, I like him over Ross. I really liked how he played last season, so we should let him prove himself again
March 28, 200818 yr He was playing really well at the beginning of last year. I know he is never going to be an all-star but I'm hoping he can be more than servicable.
March 28, 200818 yr Yea, I like him over Ross. I really liked how he played last season, so we should let him prove himself again Yea De Aza is pretty cool. Cody only hit a 1.064 OPS last year. De Aza should be able bunt and slap his way to that with ease.

It is a too early to know who Alejandro De Aza is as a player He has a lot of talent for sure and has hit at every level . Lets just sit back and wait and see. L
March 28, 200818 yr I think he's earned his shot. If he's healthy he can really help out at the top of the order. Plus he's got the wheels you need to cover center field in our ballpark.
March 28, 200818 yr It was an interesting. Actually, De Aza was Minor Rule-5 draftee from Dodgers. Not Major. Who was gonna recommend him?? :Clap
March 28, 200818 yr He's going to kill ST every year. But he's not a ML regular. Based on what? He's got speed. Quick bat. Clutch hitter. Good defensively. He was a patient hitter in the minors. Even starting to show some power now. Of course he still has to prove himself through a full season in the majors but I don't think you can dismiss him out of hand. This is a guy who should hit between .270-.300. And before anyone says anything, yes, minor league batting average does correlate with future Major League average ( except for Hanley, who hit 40 pts HIGHER than his minor league avg.)

He never once hit .300 in the minors. Maybe he might hit .270 some day as a major leaguer, but he doesn't do enough else well to be a major league regular.

Just a question of if it will translate to the major league level
March 28, 200818 yr Compare with Eric Reed, Reggie Abercrombie and De Aza. Bottom Line is, Reed, Abercrombie DID NOT show the power in Major level, but De Aze DID. That's it.
March 28, 200818 yr TO ME, it's irrelevant. When it's all said and done, we'll be looking at #24, Cameron Maybin patrolling CF...and hopefully, for many years. De Aza's just here for now...as a matter of fact, this could be a good thing. If he does a solid job, we could trade him for an area of need.

March 28, 200818 yr Author When it's all said and done, we'll be looking at #24, Cameron Maybin patrolling CF...and hopefully, for many years. That's what we all hope for, but it'll be nice to not have to rush Maybin due to gaping hole in CF. De Aza's just here for now...as a matter of fact, this could be a good thing. If he does a solid job, we could trade him for an area of need. There's plenty of scenarios possible, but anytime a Marlin plays well, its good for the Marlins. Walks are boring.. well, he could steal 2B after walking...would that make it more exciting for you? He never once hit .300 in the minors. Maybe he might hit .270 some day as a major leaguer, but he doesn't do enough else well to be a major league regular. Well, he hit 286 in A and 278 in AA, so that is in the 270-300 range he was talking about I think.

I know, I'm rooting for De Aza and the Marlins, just sayin'...Maybin was brought in to be the CF'er of the future. So this is just temporary. That's what I meant.
March 28, 200818 yr De Aza may draw enough walks to put up a solid OBP vs. RHP so that platooning with Ross it could make CF a decent spot. He looked good pre-injury.
March 28, 200818 yr De Aza may draw enough walks to put up a solid OBP vs. RHP so that platooning with Ross it could make CF a decent spot. He looked good pre-injury. This is the guy I kept an eye on last ST. He looked real good pre injury. And I think you would have to dismiss his numbers after finally coming back last year. It takes a while to readjust, and he didn't get the time. The guy can hit for average, showed great patience at the plate, and has the speed. He steals bases very well. Once he takes second, he is a real threat to take third. That plays head games with defenses. Alot of times he would be down 0-2 and then work the count to 3-2, usually with a good outcome. This year he has added some power. Don't know where that came from. Maybe because of Maybin's potential he is attempting to show more worth. I see him making quotes similar to what Castillo used to say while here. "If I hit a home run it is an accident." He can definetly play his position and he is disruptive on the base paths. Needs work hitting lefties. But platooning him right now with Cody should give Maybin plenty of time to work on his flaws. This may be unpopular here, but if he steps up and shows what he can do, I can actually see the team keeping him and trading injury prone Cody sometime in the future. Yes De Aza was injured last year, but don't forget that was a freak incident. He stepped on a sprinkler head in Washington's OF. That's far different than hammy and knee problems.
March 28, 200818 yr I think he played more than 1 week (5-6 weeks as I recall) last season and looked pretty good Yes, but he started off the season playing really well for the first 8 games. That's when he got injured. When he came back from injury, he showed some of his effectiveness, as well as the inability to hit a breaking ball. But that can happen to a young player thats out for a few months. I have been a fan of his since he started off on a tear last season. He deserves his shot, so they should give it to him. As much as I like Cody, De Aza should get his chance to shine. I like Cody as a backup, and home run threat off the bench late in games.
March 28, 200818 yr Last year De Aza became one of my favorite Marlins, esp during ST. He just seems like a solid well-rounded player. Then he got hurt. Despite this, I feel he has earned a spot on the opening day roster with yet another strong Spring performance. I'm definitely pulling hard for him, but we shall see what kind of MLB player he is. The verdict is still out on him. I agree that he could be a very well be a .270 or better hitter.
March 28, 200818 yr Walks are boring.. well, he could steal 2B after walking...would that make it more exciting for you? :notworthy Maybe.. but it has to be a head first slide. Sliding on your butt is boring also. Unless they spike the SS and get into a brawl.. thats exciting!!! Btw.... I was being sarcastic..
March 28, 200818 yr Second ST he's hit very well in. I love those little half-swing slap hits he dumps into shallow right. :lol
