May 19, 200818 yr Rabb, well if you heard it too and I only said "I believe Robert Andino can play some outfield..." what are you busting my balls about? I'm not busting your balls about anything, I'm letting you know that he can't. If I said "I believe Josh Willingham was drafted as a catcher", I would hope you or someone else would correct me. I much rather be corrected than stay wrong. I wasn't wrong. The operative words above are "can" and "was". One refers to the ability to do something whether called upon to do before or not, the other "was" refers to something that is a statement of fact and has happened, There is nothing for me to be wrong about unless you are stating flatly and undeniably that he is unable under any circumstances to play the outfield. Marlins2003, you're a great poster, but you must be the most defensive person on the forums. I'm not even gonna go into it.
May 19, 200818 yr Rabb, you know I think you're great too, you show a tremendous wit here and understanding of the game so it's hard to get pissed off with you, and I'm not really. I enjoy the language, I pick my words carefully, you must be able to tell by many of my posts that I very often research my comments before making them. And as I said I enjoy the language, I think it's funny to have occasionally have these linguistic bouts about words and their meanings. I actually enjoyed the back and forth, and I'm smiling as I compose this. :cheers You're still wrong...lololol

Great move by the Fish to bolster their outfield....We need all the help we can to improve our wonderful defense all over the diamond...
May 19, 200818 yr RF Hermida CF Jones SS Ramirez 1B Jacobs 2B Uggla 3B Cantu LF Gonzalez C Treanor P When Hammer is back, put him in between Jacobs and Uggla. Actually....here is a 2nd draft of what the lineup should be: 3B Amezaga RF Hermida SS Ramirez 1B Jacobs LF Hammer(when he's back 2B Uggla CF Jones C Rabelo/Treanor Pitcher spot Heck we can even do the LaRussa deal....Have Jones lead off, the pitcher bats 8th and Amezaga 9th Cantu cant play defense at 3rd for the life of him and Amezaga's speed and defense is something we can definitely use....Remember in 2003...speed kills

Don't get me wrong. I think Amezega is a nice litttle player, and he brings a great attitude towards the game, but he is not an everyday player. If Cantu can't play better defense, then maybe it will be time to give McPherson a chance. To be fair, Cantu's biggest problem are his throws. He fields everything smoothly but then throws it away. I think given more time he can improve the throws. He is learing on the job.

That would be the next option especially since Amezaga has been kind of fiddling with the bat lately....
May 19, 200818 yr For the money, not a bad investment... Cheap player, low risk move if he doesnt pan out... He's 33, I cant see his skills totally going to pot. Lol, I used pot and pan in the same post... What are you making, brownies?
May 19, 200818 yr Maybe, with Josh back, we can do either: Hermida, Willingham, Ramirez, Jacobs, Uggla, Cantu, Jones/Ross, Catcher, Pitcher or Ramirez, Hermida, Willingham, Jacobs, Uggla, Cantu, Jones/Ross, Catcher, Pitcher

He can't... he'll actually suffer Spontaneous Human Combustion if he plays in the OF... He actually burst into flames a bit when he puts on an OF glove... Just sayin' :lol

May 19, 200818 yr I like the signing. When does he join the team? He signed a minor league deal and is headed to extended ST so it'll be a little bit.

May 19, 200818 yr Jacque Jones isn't a difference maker, and I don't even think we really "NEEDED" him. If he ends up starting in CF, our defense only gets worse (if that's possible). There were other options out there, that I would've preferred.
May 19, 200818 yr what are u talking about eddie....Jones is gonna end up being our starting Centerfielder...Amezega is doing horrible...i would much rather have amezega used as a utility player
May 19, 200818 yr Yeah, Jones is NOT a good center fielder. His arm makes Luis Gonzalez look like Vladimir Guererro. With a pitching staff that is getting hit hard, I think you need a good defensive center fielder. I just don't think offense is really the concern right now. We faced some good pitching from Cincinnati and Kansas City - you just gotta tip your hat to them. But is there really an offense in the National League better than the Fish? Not really.

I would certainly pick the Phillies over our lineup, but I agree. As I said, offense isn't really a top priority on this team, right now. SP and defense are (at least, it should be). ...and the only spot we were currently getting above average D from (not looking up stats...just from watching games, here) is CF. ...and also, as I said; I think if we would've been a tad more patient, and used Ross regularly in CF (consistent AB's)...I think you would've seen at least a .260 hitter, with 15-20 HR power. For this team, that's basically all we need from CF, offensively, imo.
May 20, 200818 yr ...and the only spot we were currently getting above average D from (not looking up stats...just from watching games, here) is CF. I have to disagree with how much people say this, especially with regards to Amezaga's defense in CF. The guy does, as many of us say make a lot of plays look really exciting, but watching many games this season, I've seen him overrun the ball a bit and miss catches he shouldn't, and I've never seen him throw out anyone from the OF, so I don't know where people get off talking abouit his arm. Cody is a better CF IMO, defensively and (obviously) offensively. As for Jones, I hope that if anything, the plan is to platoon him with Cody. At least vs RHP, Jones is basically a career 293ish hitter vs RHP with an 800+ OPS, and that could be decent, although I'm not sold on the whole "force whoever plays CF to leadoff and bat Hanley third" movement, since I don't think he or Cody make sense as leadoff guys.

I wasn't talking about his arm; I was talking about his (Amezaga's) range. Lets just say, I don't see Jacque Jones patrolling CF, as well as Amezaga and Ross. For the record, I'd love to be wrong with all I've said about Jacque Jones. I just don't see the necessity, however.
May 20, 200818 yr I'm glad that the fish were able to finish this up, I think Jacque CAN bring a lot to the table.

Um, we get this talk about his arm from watching the games. You've never seen him throw anyone out from the OF, but in 2007 he was 2nd in the NL in Assists from CF. (That means he threw out the 2nd most people of all CFers in the league). Rowand was 1st in Assists, but he played more than twice as many innings as Amezaga. I'm not going to go into the rest, about how he only makes his plays look great when they aren't, because I've already discussed how almost every defensive metric has him as an above average CF (He led all starting CFs in Range Factor). No idea where that "he is a bad CF" thing started. To say Cody is a better CF than Amezaga, despite his complete lack of range out there, is nowhere near accurate.
