June 3, 200818 yr He's the kiss of death. He is not a good catcher, but he makes up for it by calling a crap game and not hitting.
June 3, 200818 yr He'll surprise you with a home run once in a blue moon but otherwise he's just useless.
June 3, 200818 yr We're better off just sending him down and giving one of our catching prospects the back-up catcher slot. Rabelo is just useless.
June 3, 200818 yr I think it is fair at this point to say that maybe we should have traded Miguel and Willis to the dodgers or angels because it appears the bulk of players we got back are not valuable pieces on the team .

Rabelo was the worst player in the trade. Maybin is 21. Miller just turned 23, and continues to improve. Badenhop and De La Cruz has some good stuff, but they might just need more time. Not as if the Angels players are thriving. Nick Adenhart hasn't done anything, and Howie Kendrick has been injured. Mathis doesn't even start, and neither does Willits.

Correct me if i am wrong but I believe the Angels were offering Santana in the packages as well , he has been very good this year . kendrick is not injured anymore and has shown great potential at the major league level . I personally prefered the packages involving the dodgers assuming the names that were mentioned were true . As far as what we got back from the tigers maybin and miller are the only players i think may develope into quality mlb players. I am not high on rabelo , De La Cruz , or Badenhop , the other guy in triple AAA i havent seen enough of him to comment .

I think it's a little silly to evaluate this trade 2 months into the deal. 2 years is a much better sample size. By then Miller will be 25, and Maybin will be with the big club. We'll see by then... Just like Miller, Santana was really bad last year. BUT he always had potential. Look at him now. That could easily be Miller one day. Maybin is a 5 tool player, but is a little raw right now. I'd like to see him develop before I evaluate this. Evaluating this trade now, makes no sense. As a matter of fact, Miguel Cabrera isn't even hitting .280...that's how early it is.

They're not valuable pieces now. Man, no offense, but you seem pretty impatient. First you said "The Collapse of 2008" and now you're deeming the Cabrera and Willis trade an ultimate failure. Give it some time! The guys we received are all really young!

To me Miller and Maybin may pan out but as far as the others they are pieces at best and some of them arent that young .

Santana is also going into arbitration that does not fit with our salary scheme. He would ruin our payroll for next year, and basically be a one year rental who we would have to then trade soon. What is the point of acquiring players that won't grow with the team? Ervin Santana makes 0% for the Marlins regardless if he is a pretty good pitcher or not. Kendrick is great but then what would have happened to Uggla this year? I'm shocked by Uggla's production this year, and now looking even in a short hindsight, obtaining a 2B when Dan is playing out of his mind and Coghlan starting to turn into a legitimate option in AA would have been pretty dumb. Adenhart should be pretty good but not as good as Miller, Mathis is a better backup type than Rabelo but big deal on that because who cares about the last player in the deal, and Willits is a cool OBP outfielder that doesn't have any slugging potential. If the Angels deal didn't include Wood, or Hank Conger, it was pointless for us, and they would not trade them. It was 100% the right decision not to deal with the Angels for what was reported on the table. They weren't offering a good package for our needs. As for the Dodgers, you bet your ass if they could have gotten Kershaw, Kemp, and LaRoche they would have done it. But like you muse, "if the names mentioned were true." There was no indication those 3 were on the table from LA. Or Loney, in any sort of 3-4 man package. I'm taking the Tigers offer, over a hypothetical Dodgers deal. Coletti is an idiot, but even he couldn't have messed this one up. Which leaves us to our trade, Where we have a budding superstar in CF who is starting to rip the cover off the ball in AA, a budding superstar lefty starter who has been awesome after his first half dozen starts, Cruz and Trahern aren't doing much at the moment, but both grade out as MLB arms and should be useful: Trahern as a future 3/4/5 starter because he does have an offspeed out pitch already and Cruz as a plus set up man (he's going to be very Pintoish when it finally clicks. Wild starter turned reliever). Badenhop profiles as a fringe major leaguer and really a non factor to our team longterm so I wouldn't judge this trade at all based on the crap he is throwing for the MLB team right now. He was only called up because he is older than all our other SP prospects, and it really doesn't matter if he accrues service team, unlike a Volstad or Tucker who could cost us millions in 2 years if they were called up right now. And Rabelo sucks, but he was never supposed to be a starting catcher, just a backup. And so what that he can't even do that. Backup catchers are non-factors longterm. We pretty much KILLED the Tigers in this trade, and it's only going to get worse for them as Maybin and Miller turn into plus major leaguers, and Trahen and Cruz turn into solid arms. They absolutely made the right move here. No need to complain. It's not about this year, even if the team has exceeded expectations thus far.
June 3, 200818 yr When I heard that we had picked up Rabelo in the deal, I immediately thought that it was a mistake. His numbers, age, and situation are very similar to Matt Treanor, except that clearly Treanor can hit, while Rabelo can't hit or field. Unfortunately I noticed that Brett Hayes in AA is hitting about .214 right now. Not exactly worthy of a call-up.
June 3, 200818 yr Hopefully, the team is looking into finding a catcher worth trading for, the catcher position has been a joke since LoDuca left (Pudge is sorely needed back)... I'd also hope there is a catcher in the draft worth getting

I'd also hope there is a catcher in the draft worth getting They're probably going catcher in the draft, which means recycled catchers for a while. I don't mind Treanor. He's a heads up player and he doesn't call a bad game. I just never understood why the club hyped Rabelo over Treanor before the season. Didn't see it then... don't see it now.
June 3, 200818 yr If somehow Buster Posey slips to the Marlins, he is the catcher in the draft closest to being MLB-ready.
June 3, 200818 yr Like I've stated before, Rabelo is a downgrade from Olivo. Although Olivo can't catch a fast ball down the center of the plate, the f***er could hit. Sure, he'll strike out, but so does the rest of the team. I think it's about time we see if Amezaga can play backup catcher too....lol Might as well, At least he can bunt, and has probably shown the same amount of power as Rabelo. And anyway, why was Treanor taken out last night? I wasn't watching the 9th inning. I had to run to the gas station to put air in my girlfriends tire in her car so she can make it to work in the morning.
June 3, 200818 yr You can add me to the Rabelo Hater club. I think he has been a problem behind the plate with his game calling, his defense is not that great either he lets a lot of balls get by him. Sure they are WP's but look at Treanor he blocks almost everything. If Treanor had more power he would be a good catcher but as it stands now Treanor is still BETTER than Rabelo IMO. Granted Treanor can't catch every game but I think we should only use Rabelo sparingly.

It did not make much of a difference in that inning but I dont blame Fredi for doing it.

June 3, 200818 yr If somehow Buster Posey slips to the Marlins, he is the catcher in the draft closest to being MLB-ready. Of course, a Seminole would say that! Some have Tampa taking Posey and some say they'll take Pedro Alvarez. Either way, it's doubtful Posey will last until the Marlins pick. Most people think they'll go with high school catcher Kyle Skipworth, which means we wouldn't see him for awhile.
June 3, 200818 yr One would think, that as good as this team has done scouting, we would have a catcher by now.
June 3, 200818 yr It was very obvious he wasn't going to perform. Unfortunately it appeared the Marlins thought rather highly of him from the beginning.
