Out of this list, if you were to pick 5 guys, who do you think would be in our "future" starting 5?

I think this is a tough question, personally. So many pitchers with a lot of potential, I think.

i think Olsen can provide to this team also, however i would like to see him strike out more (before this year CBS said he could reach 200 k's)

mitre seems quite injury prone

nolasco i like as a long reliever out of the pen

vanden hurk showed flashes of potential, still could become quite good however i prefer the 5 mentioned above

hopper (see nolasco)

the rest of course i have heard of, however i dont know enough about them to make judgements

Alright, I'll go with...

Andrew Miller

Josh Johnson

Chris Volstad

Sean West

Rick Vanden Hurk

I like Olsen, however, come to think of it, his K rate is quite alarming, as well, as his attitude, at times. Probably trade bait in the future.

I was never a big fan of Anibal Sanchez' stuff to be honest. I always thought Mitre, for example, had better "stuff" than Anibal.

EDIT: I see Ryan Tucker being our closer, in the future.

It is harder considering that some will have to bounce back from serious injuries, however that aside let's look on optimal ability levels...

There are about 4 or 5 of you who didn't include Anibal Sanchez in your future rotation.

My question to you is:

WHY!?

Because he wasn't that good in 06 and is a huge injury risk.

You're right, a 2.83 ERA with a 1.19 WHIP isn't good at all.

He was very good in 2006 but his peripherals going foward weren't very good. But consider his K numbers in the minors, IMO you'd have to expect improvement in those areas.

But also as noted are the injury problems.

But I also think JJ is getting overratedin the same way...he was great in 2006, but I doubt he could repeat a 3.10 ERA. He had a 1.30 WHIP, which is more inline to high 3-low 4 ERAs. Still very good, still a huge upgrade to our current rotation, but I don't think he's the ace people often call him.

also my list

Andrew Miller

Sean West

Aaron Thompson

JJ

Volstad

Top 3 are only ones with #1 potential IMO, in order of I think of chance of reaching that point. Outside of them, others are either back of the rotation guys or have too many Qs (Anibal-injuries, Tucker-one pitch, Sinkbeil-unimpressive milb numbers, Allison-lots haha) although you could certainly add West to that list.

how does Thompson have #1 potential? Yet, Volstad doesn't??
