July 14, 200817 yr With his recent performance in Detroit he could probably be had for very cheap. Also, he had his big season when Wiley was our pitching coach. He could boost the bullpen, and come back to Florida. Anyone else like the idea?
July 14, 200817 yr I do. The fans love him, he loved it here, and maybe he can turn his career back. BUT, only if it is very cheap. If not, then forget about it.
July 14, 200817 yr I wouldn't be opposed to it if the asking price was very cheap, but didn't he sign a contract extension? I could be wrong... EDIT: 3 years/29 million Dontrelle Willis lhp 3 years/$29M (2008-10) signed extension 12/20/07 (avoided arbitration) 08:$7M, 09:$10M, 10:$12M $1.5M in award bonuses based on Cy Young vote 1 year/$6.45M (2007) acquired in trade (from Florida) 12/4/07 re-signed 1/07 (avoided arbitration) $50,000 performance bonus for 32 GS 1 year/$4.35M (2006), plus performance bonuses re-signed 1/06 (avoided arbitration) 06:$4.35M ($0.2M up front, $2.65M in 06, $1.5M deferred) $0.2M in performance bonuses: $50,000 for 35 g, $0.1M for Cy Young, $25,000 each for All-Star selection & Silver Slugger record for 1st-time arbitration-eligible starting pitcher 1 year/$0.3785M (2005), re-signed 2/05 1 year/$0.3535M (2004), re-signed 3/04 (split contract paying $188,891 in minors) agent: Matt Sosnick ML service: 4.143
July 14, 200817 yr The Tigers gave him a lot of money, I don't think they're ready to give up on him yet.
July 14, 200817 yr no way the Tigers give up on him this early, I would love him back, but the contract that was signed there is no way we can have him.
July 14, 200817 yr The Tigers gave him a lot of money, I don't think they're ready to give up on him yet. I agree wishfull thinking by some . Detroit is not going to pull the plug this early into the contract . Plus Detroit is a larger market no need to dump a guy with a 3 year contract .
July 14, 200817 yr Hell no. At this rate, he's gonna try to come back to the majors as a hitter a la Rick Ankiel.
July 14, 200817 yr I would like it, he is comfortable here, and maybe he can find the magic he had in 03' and 05'.
July 14, 200817 yr Hell no. At this rate, he's gonna try to come back to the majors as a hitter a la Rick Ankiel. That would'nt be a bad idea...

I was thinking the same thing...but what position could he play? The Tigers have enough first basemen...he would have to get into his 2003 shape to play OF. But there's no sight quite like the D-Train in the batter's box. As for a Fish reunion, maybe once the ballpark opens....

But there's no sight quite like the D-Train in the batter's box. As for a Fish reunion, maybe once the ballpark opens.... Dontrelle's always been convinced he could play CF. I remember an extra innings game last year, he was begging Fredi to let him play in the OF after he used him as a PH.
July 14, 200817 yr I'd like to reacquire him. I don't think the Tigers are going to want to swallow all of his contract, though. So....not happenin'
July 14, 200817 yr I love D-train-but hasn't he been just as bad as Hendrickson? I know, at least there is hope he could be what he was-whereas Hendrickson never sniffed excellence.
July 15, 200817 yr I definitely wouldnt mind it if he comes cheap. He provides the clubhouse with great energy and we all know whats hes capable of doing. All around great guy.
July 15, 200817 yr A) Expensive...we are going to be shedding salary at the end of the year with many of our players entering arbitration for the first time. We are all about taking risks, but not expensive risks. The players that we are willing to spend money on (Ramirez...well...only Ramirez) we do so because of the obvious lack of risk associated with them. B) The Tigers traded for both Dontrelle and Cabrera. As much as we'd like to say that egos don't come into these things and imagine that GMs make decisions in a logical bubble, Dombrowski is on the line in a big way. He will try and rehab Dontrelle as hard as he can, and the only way that he could move him is if he showed any shade of his previous value. As it stands, Dontrelle is a stock he bought on its decline. He's not about to sell until it exceeds its original value. Maybe not 2005 but certainly 2006. It would be a serious black eye for Dombrowski to trade Dontrelle to the Marlins 6 months after acquiring him FROM the Marlins at a far lower value. As much as we love the guy, he's not coming over here. He has some demons in his delivery to work out, but he will do so with the Tigers and not with the Marlins.
July 15, 200817 yr I'd rather re-acquire BK Kim. April was 3 months ago buddy Point? Kim's still sitting on free agency.
July 15, 200817 yr I love D-train-but hasn't he been just as bad as Hendrickson? I know, at least there is hope he could be what he was-whereas Hendrickson never sniffed excellence. He's been worse than Hendrickson. Much worse.
July 15, 200817 yr He has some demons in his delivery to work out According to at least one Detroit paper, he is COMPLETELY changing his delivery, his current discombobulation not being repeatable. As if it ever was. Probably re-emerge as a short-armer. :lol :lol :lol It's kinda funny that the start that got him sent down to be perhaps the most expensive minor-leaguer in history was (I write from memory) an inning and 1/3 or 2/3, 5 walks and 6 runs. Almost identical to Miller's last disaster. Yeah, yeah, I know, two different situations. But, interesting, nonetheless.
July 15, 200817 yr Is Detroit paying for his entire contract? If so, sure... bring him here. Fix his mechanics; make it work. Last 3 years, lefties have hit .197, with a .515 .OPS against Dontrelle. Lefty specialist... -Nice guy -Respected in the clubhouse ...almost forgot...not realistic, lol.
July 15, 200817 yr The whole "respected in the clubhouse" with regard to Willis, considering that they got rid of him, may just not be the case. His behavior may very well be one of the main reasons he ain't here anymore. Same with Cabrera. Both of them were apparently way too immature. I suspect Fredi had a lot to do with it, coming from the more staid, veteran Atlanta environment. Anyone else see the references to naked shenanigans in front of female reporters? Then there's the drunk driving thing. And little stuff like loud music. This ain't little league. In any case, as has already been pointed out, there's no way Willis is coming back here anytime soon, if ever. Imagine how Dombrowski feels. The poor guy handed out $180 million to what turns out to be two losers. Willis is a vastly overpriced minor-leaguer, which is totally pitiful. Cabrera, who has been more than replaced in ALL respects by Cantu for pocket-change, and who the Detroit papers blabbered on about showing up for spring training in tip-top, excellent shape is now being referred to by them as "out-of-shape," "over-weight" and worse. All that conditioning only took half a season to go poof after he picked up his guaranteed $153 mill. The guy's well on his way to becoming an average DH for someone, assuming he doesn't totally lose it and turn into someone who looks like Ray King. Beinfest looks like a genius at this point, even if NONE of the return from Detroit EVER works out, which ain't likely going to be the case. He dumped what turned out to be the two most overpaid players we had and saved $15+ mill in payroll.
July 15, 200817 yr Why is this a ongoing topic? Cantu and next year Mcphearson is as good or better then Miggy as a Marlin. I wish we would have traded for Inge in that package to be honest.
