July 31, 200817 yr I'm really disappointed we didn't get Manny. I know we don't NEED him, but don't tell me we're close to a deal to get a guy like that and then not make it happen! Now I'm listening to the Mets "talk radio" guys rejoicing on the radio over the fact that we didn't get Manny. I HATE it when those Mets fans rejoice! They said the Marlins are "stupid" because they let Manny "get away" over a mere $2 million dollars. Why couldn't we make a deal to get Lo Duca? Let's hope we have enough to make a run at the playoffs. All I know is the Mets and Phillies would be wetting their pants right about now if we got Manny. Oh well...
July 31, 200817 yr I'm not unhappy about this. I don't think we need more offense. What we need going forward is a slightly stronger bullpen (got that with our trade for Rhodes), a better catcher (did not get that), and stronger starting pitching. As for the starting pitching, it looks to me like JJ is back to 06 form. Olsen is doing well, so is Nolasco, and Volstad has been solid. Those are some solid starters. The only question mark is Anibal... if he can pitch alright (high 3 ERA), I really think we'll have a great rotation the second half. Nolasco Olsen JJ Anibal Volstad That looks like an above average rotation to me. If they come close to performing as well as they did in 06 and we keep mashing, I like our chances. :thumbup
July 31, 200817 yr they wanted this outcome! The marlins loved this last 24 hours b/c it gave us free publicity and it didnt even cost anything and now they dont look like the bad guys b/c they tried to get better, It was all a Big Front but its okay as long as we get a Catcher!
July 31, 200817 yr I'm still waiting for another source on this $2M thing. I've only heard this from one source and that same source is being repeated.
July 31, 200817 yr I'm still waiting for another source on this $2M thing. I've only heard this from one source and that same source is being repeated. I highly doubt that was the reason....then again the dodgers gave up LaRoche and a pitching prospect, I think Hermida and Tucker was a way better deal for the Pirates.... but who knows what happened.
July 31, 200817 yr Gammons said the Pirates in the end didnt like what the Marlins were offering, namely Hermida, Coughlan, and Tank. Never heard those names before. Dont think they ended up with a better than package than that. Makes you wonder how much of what the "sources" say is accurate.
July 31, 200817 yr The Pirates had a very good deadline, with the haul they received for Jason Bay and what they got for Nady. Dude, other than Tabata the received future journeymen. Even Tabatas stock has fallen and that's why he was moved. Also, Hermida is better than any of the guys they just picked up for Bay.

Dont think they ended up with a better than package than that. Makes you wonder how much of what the "sources" say is accurate. I've heard 100 conflicting things. Some say that Pirates pulled out, some say that Boston pulled out. I have no idea, but of course the sources that we are following are the most negative ones.
July 31, 200817 yr this is what they said happened on the trade deadline show the amrlins were gonna trade coughlin hermida and tankersly yo pitsburg pits was giving jason bay to boston and a pitcher to the fish and boston was giving manny to us and 7 million dollars cash but we wanted 2 million over what manny is being paid now so no 1 was happy in there end of the deal and the dodgers took our spot in the deal

I highly doubt the $2 million was the reason that the trade fell through. Perhaps the Marlins were asked to up the quality of prospect(s) they were giving up and in return they asked for the money and when Boston refused, Pittsburgh pulled out because they didn't like the package. Who knows, but I find it hard to believe it was strictly about the money. Loria has shown he's willing to spend when they are close, and i'm sure that would have been the case for Manny. Just from following this throughout the day, to me, it looked like the Pirates were the biggest reason this fell apart. It seemed like they pulled out when they thought they had Bay traded to Tampa. Then that fell through. Meanwhile, the Red Sox were talking to LA about Manny, so when the Pirates came back at the last second, they were included in that deal and we were left out. Regardless, we'll move on and we'll be fine. It would have been nice, but it wasn't to be.
July 31, 200817 yr The thing that concerns me the most is the Marlins' failure to pick up any kind of catching upgrade. I really thought that was a bigger need than relief pitching. I hope that we can still get a catcher before September.
July 31, 200817 yr Listening to Beinfest on Marlins on Deck seems like they're not planning on getting a catcher.
July 31, 200817 yr Listening to Beinfest on Marlins on Deck seems like they're not planning on getting a catcher. That's what you heard? I was watching and it sounded to me like he said the complete opposite and that they would continue to try and upgrade.

It is reported the problem was not as much as players involved but the dollars...The Marlins wanted the Red Sox to take more of Ramirez salary than they were willing to offer
August 1, 200817 yr Does anyone think we can get LoDuca in the waiver trading thingy? It's not impossible.

August 1, 200817 yr ill i got to say is that the pirates are a mickey mouse club...moss and hansen are from boston... LA only had to give up andy laroche and morris... personally i think hermida and what ever mid level prospect we were giving up was better then the LA prospects... Im pretty sure it was the Marlins that ended the trade talks about Manny.
August 1, 200817 yr The Manny deal was sh*tty. After this year, the Pirates would have had Hermida, Tucker, and Stanton, Boston would have gotten Bay and a prospect, and the Marlins would have a hole in right field, no Tucker, and no Stanton. Thank you!
August 1, 200817 yr No, actually I think the Marlins did a great job, not jumping at the Manny deal. If they were to give up Hermida, Tucker, Stanton, and a another prospect for just Manny, that would be unfair. I am glad they asked fro more in return. I think they will eventually get a catcher through the waiver wire, maybe Laird or LoDuca. But I still like Bake back there.

Because our FO knew he was getting released anyway:D. Now if we really want him we could pick him up for free. (Minus League Minimum I suppose).
