July 31, 200817 yr Assuming no deal has been made that we are currently unaware of, I'm highly dissapointed that the FO couldn't make any significant moves today. They may have passed on a BIG opportunity to improve this team, whether with Manny or even a catcher. Blah.
July 31, 200817 yr You can argue we needed to pick up a catcher but "falling flat on their face" is a ridiculous statement. We had one of the best offenses in baseball in the first half, and our pitching which was the weak spot gets an infusion of Josh Johnson, Anibal Sanchez, and Arthur Rhodes.
July 31, 200817 yr Catcher is a HUGE hole. Baker/Hoover combo is far below average. Failure to acquire a catcher is unacceptable.
July 31, 200817 yr I now think the Manny talk was just so they could put it as an excuse later for not making any important deals. We took care of the relief thing, but the catcher thing is a problem. I dont think we can win a playoff series with John Baker or Paul Hover as our catcher. Hopefully there's something we dont know about.
July 31, 200817 yr I think we "helped out" our bullpen, but our offense for as many HRs as we hit, still is night and day and that's going to have to improve for a playoff push. I can get over Manny, but not getting a catcher like Molina is disappointing. Especially when our pitching staff is very young and our catchers are pretty much mediocre. Oh, and remind me never to ever listen to any hype around the Marlins and big deals. Now I have to hear more BS on how we are the cheapest team in sports and blah, blah, blah.
July 31, 200817 yr Well, reportedly the ONLY reason we didn't get Manny is because Loria wanted $2 Million on top of Manny's remaining contract.
July 31, 200817 yr I agree with Hotcorner. Getting Ramirez was not a need, it would've been a luxury. We bolstered out bullpen, which we needed to do. The only thing, apparently, we didn't address is catcher, which is surprising considering all the names that have been bandied about, and I can't figure it would take a lot to get some of them.
July 31, 200817 yr This whole trade deadline was ridiculous. A ton of teams expressed that tons of players were going to be gone, but most of them didn't move because GMs were asking for way too much. I wish we had got a catcher, but I wasn't up for giving up what they were asking for.
July 31, 200817 yr Listen to 790....Admin oing to be interviewed he better have done a traded or else he will hear it in the stadium
July 31, 200817 yr The Manny deal was sh*tty. After this year, the Pirates would have had Hermida, Tucker, and Stanton, Boston would have gotten Bay and a prospect, and the Marlins would have a hole in right field, no Tucker, and no Stanton.
July 31, 200817 yr If they don't announce any more trades then I would consider this an epic fail by Beinfest and Co.
July 31, 200817 yr "Flat flat on their face?" :lol How do you figure? We have the same team that has been contending all year, except now we actually have a 2nd lefty in the bullpen. What did the Phillies do? What did the Mets do? What did a team like the Brewers do to help their bullpen needs? Cardinals? Nothing to speak of. That's who we're contending with. And...there's still the entire month of August to get an upgrade at catcher (which is all we basically NEED...we didn't NEED Manny...would've been nice...but NEED? No. Especially for Hermida, Tucker, AND Stanton :lol ) We'll be fine...heck, we're adding someone today. His name is Anibal Sanchez. Solid 5th starter. Just as good or better than the amazing Joe Blanton, whom the Phillies had to give something for.
July 31, 200817 yr If they don't announce any more trades then I would consider this an epic fail by Beinfest and Co. I just don't get this line of thinking. At all.
July 31, 200817 yr So can someone give me the link to 790 online or update me on what Admin is saying?
July 31, 200817 yr The Marlins addressed their greatest needs, and the Catcher that was actually good was not available for prospects. I would rather start Baker every day than acquire a fetid turd like Molina.
July 31, 200817 yr If they don't announce any more trades then I would consider this an epic fail by Beinfest and Co. I just don't get this line of thinking. At all. 1. We had a chance at getting Manny and didn't 2. If they hadn't been after Manny they could have focused on other trades 3. We needed to get better and didn't.
July 31, 200817 yr Yeah they fell flat on their face considering no one in baseball is allowed to trade anyone anymore this season... What?...*listening*...Oh so in baseball, people are allowed to trade players after this deadline so long as they clear waivers?...hmmm...interesting...

We had a chance at getting Manny and didn't 2. If they hadn't been after Manny they could have focused on other trades 3. We needed to get better and didn't. 1. We don't need Manny. It would've been a luxury. Are people forgetting what a potent offense we have and that we lead the Majors in homers WITHOUT him? 2. I doubt that's how it works. We did make another trade during all this Manny stuff after all. 3. We did get better, by adding another situational lefty and another solid bullpen arm. We certainly didn't get worse.
July 31, 200817 yr Well, reportedly the ONLY reason we didn't get Manny is because Loria wanted $2 Million on top of Manny's remaining contract. And people defend this front office ? Its not about winning, but all about the Benjamins with Loria. Don't ever forget that. :confused

We had a chance at getting Manny and didn't 2. If they hadn't been after Manny they could have focused on other trades 3. We needed to get better and didn't. So the first 2 is disappointment that we didn't let the Pirates and Red Sox f*** us. Yeah, how sad. And yeah, we didn't get a catcher, and it sucks. Did you notice that besides Pudge, all these catcher's that were supposedly on the block didn't get moved? That's because they were asking for WAY too much and it wasn't worth it.

We had a chance at getting Manny and didn't 2. If they hadn't been after Manny they could have focused on other trades 3. We needed to get better and didn't. 1. So? We did not NEED him. 2. I guess 3. Arthur Rhodes has held lefties to an average UNDER .200 this year. Up until last night, he hadn't allowed a run in nearly 2 months. Do you even know who Arthur Rhodes is? Do you even know how much we've used Renyel Pinto this year? Are you watching? Also...last I checked...we're competing with the Phillies and Mets for the division. What did they do? What did the Wild-Card leading Cardinals do? Nothing.

I just don't think one situational lefty is gonna be the difference in winning the division and getting deep in the playoffs. Hopefully we have enough with what we have.
July 31, 200817 yr People ought to look at how few deals were actually done in the last few days considering the number of teams still in contention. Was Laird traded anywhere else? Molina? he's still a Giant and a number of teams need catchers besides the Fish. Did even a David Weathers, a free agent in waiting, who would have fit into a number of reliever-starved staffs, was he picked up? Even the guys who everyone wrote lists "The ten guys who will be traded" never got moved. So few trades went down it's almost scary. I'll miss a .400 OBP in the middle of the lineup. Maybe this is the opening a Dallas McPherson (whose OBP happens to be .410) needs to finally make it onto this team. Who knows what good can come of this? The brush with death (playing in Pittsburgh) that scares Hermida straight? So yeah, I think the story tonight is more the trades that didn't happen than perhaps those who did. And now starts the waiver period for 30 days. That ought to be really interesting.
