Did the Marlins fall flat on their face?

Featured Replies

I'm reserving judgement on this, and have to just trust in our front office to do what's right. It would have been nice to have Manny, but it was more of a sexy trade than a necessity (having such a big name on the Fish). You can never have too many bats, I guess, but mortgaging the future oufield in Stokes couldn't justify a 2 month 36 yr old rental.

It would have also been nice to upgrade our catching situation, but our focus should be defense and game calling with our catchers right now when we have so many big sticks in the lineup. I would say I'm most dissapoitned we didn't moke Jake for whatever piece so we could call McPhearson up.

In the end, we needed a verteran lefty in the pen and we got him. I think Beinfest took a "if it ain't broke" mentality since we're only a game and a half back. He made a logical, objective analysis of the team as it stood instead of a rash, emotional choice.

Well, reportedly the ONLY reason we didn't get Manny is because Loria wanted $2 Million on top of Manny's remaining contract.

And people defend this front office ? Its not about winning, but all about the Benjamins with Loria. Don't ever forget that. :confused

I would take ANYTHING written in connection with the Ramirez/Marlins deal with a grain a salt. A lot has been written in the last 24 hours, and so many have been contradictory.

Everyone keep in mind that deals have to be passed to the commissioner's office by 4 PM not released to the public. In years past, deals have leaked out later in the evening... Nomar to the Dodgers being the most prominent example. I remember that coming out around 7-8 PM a few years back.

It's still possible we made some minor moves.

the only thing i consider a fail is not unloading a couple arbitration eligible guys.

not saying it will happen, but that gives us a larger chance of a firesale in the future before the stadium. hopefully not thoguh.

the sad reality is that the market for catchers is ridiculously over inflated....

Molina turned out to not be on the market

I dont know what happened with laird, but im sure the rangers wanted something ridiculous.

Also we did improve by adding Rhodes, and didnt give up too much value so as to handicap us in the future.

How many deals acctually went down today?

Or maybe they were asking for a lot in return for the 2 month rental.

I've never seen a person bitch so much, and be so ignorant...you actually said we were the next Pittsburgh Pirates not so long ago. Imagine if we actually were the Pirates. I can only imagine what you'd say...

ill i got to say is that the pirates are a mickey mouse club...moss and hansen are from boston... LA only had to give up andy laroche and morris... personally i think hermida and what ever mid level prospect we were giving up was better then the LA prospects...

they got a relief pitcher... we could of used a catcher, but we will see what happens. They still have the waiver period.

Who did the Phillies pick up? Did they pick up the left-hander they were desperate for?

The Mets? Raul Ibanez vaporized.

Where did Will Ohman wind up when the Braves turned sellers?

You could down the list, very little got done.

We did EVERYTHING we can. For that I credit the FO. By saying no to any deals we don't know about, I assume that other teams wanted to gut us. So I am glad we didn't do anything. I would have liked to see Manny, but we didn't get him. Big deal. We are fine.

The Pirates had a very good deadline, with the haul they received for Jason Bay and what they got for Nady.

I'm not too upset. I think the Rhodes trade will work out.

When I first heard about the Manny trade I was a supporter. But then I realized that while Hermida isn't having the most spectacular of seasons, he still has potential and isn't worth trading away for a rental who plays a position where the Marlins aren't severely lacking. On top of that, I didn't want to deal Stanton. It would have been kind of neat to have a high profile player like Ramirez on the team but we are probably better off.

I would have liked to get a catcher but I'm not too high on Molina. His OBP is terrible and not much superior than what we have now and I think Baker has the potential to match his SLG this season. I might have traded for Molina if it would take only Jacobs but apparently the Giants wanted more. I would have loved Laird but this never really seemed to get serious consideration and the asking price might not have been worth it.

If the Marlins are so desperate to add a power bat to the lineup, I think they need to consider calling up McPherson and giving him some ABs and maybe some starts. Why Wes Helms gets starts at 3B on occasion with McPherson hitting in AAA is completely beyond me.

If they don't announce any more trades then I would consider this an epic fail by Beinfest and Co.

I just don't get this line of thinking. At all.

1. We had a chance at getting Manny and didn't

2. If they hadn't been after Manny they could have focused on other trades

3. We needed to get better and didn't.

1. Yea, but now I can post on MB again! (Plus, Dolphins Stadium Right field wall is too high for Manny to climb and high five fans.)

2. They were focused on other trades... (Do you really think Beinfest was just sitting and waiting and hoping for only Manny?)

3. We needed to get better and we did. (We got a left handed reliever, something that a ton of teams were after but didnt accomplish.)

We did better than many. or (Manny) :p

EDIT: Our front office is one of the best in baseball... :D

is there any chance we still can get a catcher

o and any 1 else think the pirates are trying to pull a florida or tb by getting a young team and wait for them to blossum

We still have the month long waiver trade period.

To be honest, after this trade deadline I think I have grown a little closer to the Florida Marlins.

:gofish

While getting Manny would have been great, the bottom line is that he was a luxury, not a need. I'm more disappointed in not getting a catcher then not getting Manny. I suppose that the price for catchers was probably too high. Laird is a nice player, but not worth the reported asking price of one of the Marlins starting pitchers. It may be easier to make amove before the waiver deadline. I'm sure we could probably get Lo Duca or Zaun by August 31st if Baker doesn't start hitting and Treanor isn't healthy.

yea sorry im not into trading can you please explain what that means

is it like we still have a month to get a player

We got our left handed specialist. We get Sanchez back tonight. That is two big aquisitions. We are a better team today than we were yesterday. This will help us get wins. :thumbup

I'm glad we didn't get Manny. Remember sometimes the best trade is the one you don't do.

However, I wish we would have gotten a catcher. Even if it was someone like David Ross. It would have added some experience and made for better competition at that spot. Plus you never know what a change of scenery can do to someone.
