Andrew, Delaware: With the entire NL East playing rather shakey lately, with exception of the Marlins in recent days, who do you think has the best shot at winning the NL East?

 

SportsNation Steve Phillips: That's a tough call. All of the teams have strengths, but all of them have major problems. The Phillies and Marlins have starting pitching problems, while the Mets have major bullpen woes. I think the Mets should win that division, but I'm starting to wonder if they will. If the Mets don't win, I think the Phillies have the next-best chance. The Marlins have been a nice surprise, but I just don't think they have enough pitching to win the division. If it takes 88 wins, the Marlins will be in it--more than that, and it will be tough for them to keep pace.

if Sanchez and Volstad keep pitching well, our rotation's as good as anyone.

We easily have the best rotation in our division, and deffinetly up there in the national league. This guy is nuts.

wow. Didnt he just say a few days ago he likes us to stay in the race. These so called experts flip flop like crazy. I love how he seems to have aligence to the mets after they fired him.

I always figured it was a step down for Phillips to go from GM to analyst, thats a HUGE sign that he was a failure as GM...

 

Anyways, Rich and Tommy have talked about this all year...the half-ass rotation that we had the first 3-4 months inflates our team ERA and any analyst who doesnt regularly watch the ballclub doesnt even realize that its a completely new rotation...and thats their own fault...

 

Let them think we have no starting pitching...its better for us!

If anyone noticed (not a complaint just stating it as a fact) when they covered the Marlins win over the Phillies last night it was all about Jamie Moyer and no video nor use of Josh Johnson's name.

 

You have to believe he's just way behind the curve as starting pitching has been a problem of ours and some line producer hasn't whispered in his ear yet that the Fish finally have a bonafide starting rotation.

 

That said would anyone expect less from Steve Phillips?

Can't expect much from an unsuccessful former Mets GM

Here's the thing, the guys we got back are huge for us, but nationally, they're still relatively unknown. Johnson and Sanchez have each only had 1 successful season in the bigs prior to this year, and Volstad is a fairly highly rated prospect in our own system, but not rated nearly as high nationally as a guy like Beckett was coming up.

 

To add to that, all 3 have pitched well, but haven't really thrown any gems yet for us since their return either. So to the uninformed, it just looks like we replaced 3 mediocre arms with 3 more arms. To educated Marlins fans, we replaced 3 mediocre guys with quite possibly our best 3 pitchers (although Nolasco definitely looks to be in that discussion now).

 

It still speaks poorly on the national media that they haven't covered this yet, but I don't blame the average fan for not recognizing how improved our staff is. If the average Philly or Met fan thinks our staff still sucks, thats fine, they'll be in for a shock. But if Steve Phillips does... just shows he doesn't do his job. We're lucky as Marlins fans to have had 2 of the best GM's in baseball pretty much for our entire clubs existence (Dombrowski and Beinfest).

This would be relevant if he said this a month ago.

I never try to put too much worth on what the talking heads say about the Marlins, usually they say something bad against them and a week later contradict themselves. If I listened to everything they say I would have believed the Fish couldn't win it all in 97 or 03. Back to original statement the Marlins do have two starters coming off surgery that could be a problem, but until it comes a problem those starters are a strength.

here's my thing about steve phillips....he says that BOTH the marlins and phils have starting pitching problems yet he still puts them as the favorite to win the division. his logic makes no sense...also i dont know if anyone else saw this but before the ASB there was an episode of BBTN where phillips didnt think the fish had enough SP to win the division....then about a week later he said the phillies weakness was starting pitching but they would be able to overcome that to win....MAKES NO SENSE!!! Between him and Kruk they are both terrible!!!!! :banghead :banghead

Kruk:"Well if he's a fast player, which Hanley Ramirez is, you play in."

.."And if he's a power hitter,(looks like he's about to puke, and lets out a sigh) which Ramirez also is, you play back.."

Steve never changes as the season goes by, if he picks a team in the begginning, he'll stick with that team (Phillies), no matter how good another team is doing (Marlins).

Kruk was upset that somebody is better than his beloved Chase Utley

phillips is a totally dumbass. the marlins have the best starting pitching the NL East. and probably the 2nd best in the whole NL behind the cubs. the worst part is he picked the mets to win the divison and that's not going to happen. i hope the marlins win it but if they don't it's definately going to be the phillies who have better pitching (starting & bullpen) and offense than the mets.

Nice point, and Id like to add that while Volstad and Sanchez threw pretty good first games, tonights from Sanchez and Volstad's last performance show that these two aren't nearly as consistant as they need to be yet. This is August and whoever has the most consistancy will win the division. Freddy said not to expect too much from Sanchez and Johnson and right we shouldn't. Volstad has only thrown 2 games. Lets see a few 7-8 inning games from them with 3 earned runs or less in each start to proclaim these 3 as the saviors of our rotation.

Volstad has thrown 4 games not 2 and 3 of them were good quality starts. The other was 4 earned runs in 5 inns. He just needs more experince. Sanchez and Johnson need time to get back from injuries.
