January 6, 200917 yr http://mlb.mlb.com/media/video.jsp?mid=200901063733729 This guys are so well informed on the Marlins organization.
January 6, 200917 yr And again, they talk about attendance instead of the actual team for the most part....
January 6, 200917 yr marlins having good defense, lmao. maybe that'll improve this season with willingham and jacobs gone and hermida moving over to LF but last season their defense was horrible. also i know that the mets improved their pen but am i the only one that thinks their rotation is weak with only santana and maine as reliable starters?

And that'll invariable weaken their bullpen, starting the cycle over again
January 6, 200917 yr Problem 1. "Lets start right on top - the Mets" - Oh wait, didnt the Phillies win the division last year, and em....that means they r on top Problem 2. First thing they say bout us - awful fan base Problem 3. Mitch says we have good defence - immediately shows he is clueless Problem 4. One of them say we need to get a new stadium - seemingly unaware we have a deal in place and contracts will be finalised in a couple of weeks Positive 1. We are gonna prove these losers wrong!!!!!

The team defense is going to be outrageously better with Maybin in CF, shifting the corner OF, getting Gaby at 1B which improves both balls hit to the right side and all the "errant" throws from Hanley, Jacobs couldn't handle. Additionally, 3B should be much better with a lot more playing time going to McDallas, Bonifacio, and Helms. Not to mention if they get Pudge, that would outrageously help the running game even in his elderly state. This team is going to be really really good if the starting pitchers stay healthy.

Our defense wasn't "horrible" last season. Using +/- as a scale: Above average (that includes everywhere from slightly above above average to incredible): Hermida (+2, ranked 14th) Ross (+14, ranked 4th) Willingham (+10, ranked 6th) Uggla (+4, ranked 10th) Ramirez (+3, ranked 15th) Cantu-1B(+3, unranked) Helms-3B(+5, unranked) Bellow average (that includes everyone from slightly bellow average to Mike Jacobs): Jacobs(-27, ranked 35th) Cantu-3B(-11, ranked 30th) There is absolutely no good measurement for catchers. But we should count Baker under below average. So, last season 5 of our 8 starters were average or better. That's not "terrible". The biggest offender is gone, being replaced either by Cantu, who is a bit above average at 1B, or Gaby, who won defensive awards at 1B in the minors. 3B is probably going to end up the same as last season, unless Cantu ends up at 1B with Helms at 1B. In the OF, Hammer was good in left last season, and will be replaced with either Ross, who was great in center, or Hermida, who was about average in right and should be better in left. Maybin of course is pegged to be awesome this season. And Baker will hopefully get a bit better, but I don't think he's too bad back there anyways.

By my calculation that is an overall +3 for the players you mentioned. I know Baker is below average, but we will have improved tremendously from a team that was already "3 plays better than average" last year. So this actually has the chance to be a good+ defense this year. And if Hanley becomes more polished, watch out. (Uggla's year may have been a bit of an anomaly, hard to know at this point imo)
January 7, 200917 yr Two team race my butt. The Marlins will win 96 games next year (book it) and the ESPN and these jerks will be crying and I will drink of their tears.

Isnt that just a tad optimistic? But bring it on! Maybe 96 games is a bit optimistic. But I don't believe taking the East is out of range. W/ our starting rotation and improved bullpen, one can definitely make an argument for the Fish taking the East. Heck, we didn't even have our top two starters till mid season. This will be a very good team this year.

Isnt that just a tad optimistic? But bring it on! Actually, those who know me, know me to be very frank about this team over the past few years. I've done a lot of criticisms. I knew they would not get over the hump last year, and the year before that. There were some flaws that need to be addressed. However, 2009 genuinely has me excited. I believe we have something special here with this roster. Beinfest has addressed some of the team's glaring weaknesses (defense, stupidity). My main concern is definitely the bullpen, but if those young promising arms can step up there....this team will be one of the best in baseball. And Fredi, as much as I don't really care for him as a manager, I think will have learned a bit from last year managing the bullpen and pitching staff.
January 7, 200917 yr lol at him having to say "ok, let me correct myself, they have great potential on defense" they mention the bad fanbase, the team needing a new stadium, and the fact that we didn't get much in free agency funny that the dumba** ignores the fact that our top three in the rotation can match with anybody's in the Majors, we have improved our bullpen in the trade market this year, and we finally have Cameron Maybin as a starter for a full year. LOL, nice TRY at analysing the marlins, seems like all these "Experts" do it attempt to analyse us, but they all don't do it well.
January 7, 200917 yr A lot of our teams success this year will hinge on how Fredi manages the bullpen. Unlike last year, he has a plethora of arms to work with, and does not NEED to use Pinto every game in the 7th. We already know we are still going to live and die by our front three in the rotation and the long ball, but how Fredi uses that bullpen is vital to our success.

I watched the new MLB Network with much anticipation. It turned out to be another version of ESPN Sportscenter. It focuses on the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, and Cubs. Everyone else could be the Washington Generals in their eyes. They blew the Marlins off without a mention of how close we were last year. Harold Reynolds is a blowhard who won't let anyone get a word into the conversation. Joe McGrane is actually quite thoughtful but he is trampled by Reynolds. I can't get used to some anchor babe trying to talk OPS with the boys. It's classic pandering, and the Network loses credibility as a result. I agree with MarlinsLou to an extent. Pudge won't change the running game unless the Marlins work on holding runners. Volstad, JJ, Sanchez and Nolasco are brutal at holding runners on base. The only guy who was decent was Olsen and he's gone. This is an area of concern in a division with Reyes, et al. If Maybin can be the threat he has the potential to become, it could be fun this year. I really enjoyed watching Maybin score from first on Baker's numerous doubles at the end of the season. I think we could be sleepers this year.
January 7, 200917 yr I don't mind someone taking the Marlins to task for real issues but when they get facts wrong it's pretty amateurish. I keep telling myself this is their shakedown cruise and things will straighten themselves out, and I am reminded of when CNBC came on the scene as the no.2 business channel and were a disaster the first ten months with Sharon King as the host and programming filled with soft and lifestyle (you know 'how to dress like a Wall Street broker") until they started weeding out the ones just not good enough and replacing them with people who were. The same will happen here. Williams is awful, worse is Joe Magrane who I admit to despising already, better they bring Lisa Winton who can really talk baseball (she's the woman who should on but she's too "old" I suspect) and some others who have been toiling on MLB online, both radio and internet tv than continue with these two. Harold just needs to be surrounded with some competent co-hosts, I think the reason he's interrupting so often is two-fold - one, he has a director screaming in his earpiece and two, this duo are completely unprepared to discuss the subject at hand, whether it be the Marlins, NL East, or any other team or division and he has to vamp like crazy.
January 7, 200917 yr Yeah that's the thing...Reynolds probably knows more about baseball than those other two. He always struck me as one of the better analysts when he was on Baseball Tonight. He should have been the guy talking and not the guy asking questions.
January 7, 200917 yr Yeah I'm not really a fan of joe m. or mitch Williams. I think leiter and Reynolds are good and seem to do fine together as both have alot of knowledge. Alsoit seems as though they're trying to cover too much during one show at times and it feels rushed.

Mitch Williams, besides being the real life version of Rick "Wild Thing" Vaughn, should have no connection to anything media related.
January 7, 200917 yr "go out and spend money on guys like uggla" i wish they could just not talk when they dont know sh*t, but they're paid to talk. what can you do?
January 7, 200917 yr They've really never been right about us... or most anyone for that matter. But mainly us. So lets take it as a complement, the worse they predict us the better we do :lol :
January 7, 200917 yr "go out and spend money on guys like uggla" That was the one that said to me "This guy has zero idea what he's talking about". This is a baseball-centric network and so I'm not asking the weather girl in des moines to know Dan Uggla's story but he's been with the team three years, it's hard have missed the Rule 5 story and this same guy has already said the season is over for the Fish, it's a two team race. Forget abut the marlins for a minute but Braves and Nationals fans in January have the right to "hope". I would expect this 590, but not MLB Networks.
