Pedro Talking With Marlins

Featured Replies

I thought Miller really came on at the end of last year.

Really? He allowed 7 runs in 6 innings in September and 14 in 13 in July.

I don't know if Pedro is the answer but I definitely think Miller could use another year in the minors.

Would an all-righty rotation not have a few negative aspects?

Sure. But that doesn't mean you ruin the future of a potentially dominant lefty (any more than the Tigers have already ruined him) just to get a southpaw into the rotation. He's still just 23.

Im spilt on anibal and miller if we get pedro.

I agree, I love Anibal, but think he may never recover from that shoulder surgery. I love Miller's potential, but am slowly starting to believe he was badly managed by the Tigers and didn't give him enough time in the minors as a rookie. If we bring in Pedro, it would most likely be Anibal who goes just because of what Schnellenders stated. It would be a bad thing to have an all righty rotation, and Anibal may have shown us at the end of last season and his time in the Winter Ball League that he has yet to recover to his '06 self, and we still have to see what Miller can do, just because of how much we gave up to get him.

When we are talking about the Marlins we need to remember that the issue is not if we need Pedro, the issue should be: With the limited resources, do we need Pedro more than a free agent catcher, left fielder or bullpen help?

At this point I'll take anything that will upgrade this team.

Marlins Interest in Pedro Martinez? Not for Now

The baseball rumor mill is abuzz this morning with an ESPNdeportes.com report that the Marlins might be doing business with Pedro Martinez. But multiple sources tell us nothing is afoot on that front, that either the Marlins aren't interested in the 37-year-old pitcher or they don't feel they can afford him.

While the word is Martinez would like to pitch for the Marlins ( one source told me recently it would be his "first choice") the Marlins have had no recent discussions with Martinez and his camp, and none are planned.

Martinez, a free agent, wasn't exactly Pedro-like the past three seasons with the New York Mets in which injuries limited him to 48 total starts, a 17-15 record and 4.74 ERA.

hope the Herald's right

Anyone who thinks that our rotation is set is being completely ignorant of the fact that starting pitchers can go down like flies even before the season starts. All we have to do is look at 2006 for a reminder of how bad things can get. While we have a few prospects who may be ready to contribute by the end of the year, its nice to have whatever reinforcements you can get for the rotation. Having Pedro pitching every fifth day instead of Miller wouldn't make a tremendous difference, if anything it would improve us, but the young guys can always be stashed in AAA (where it might actually do Miller some good to learn how to pitch) and brought up when necessary. It's how the best teams in the league manage their rotations every year.

It's Spencer. Odds are he's wrong.

Bingo. Depth is a very good thing. What if Andrew Miller is bad again? What is someone is injured (injuries to the rotation aren't a question of if, but when).

For example last year - Sergio Mitre. Pencilled in as our no2 or no3 in the rotation and gets injured in his first appearance of ST

You didn't have to go that far. Nolasco, JJ, and Anibal were all injured for a good amount of time last year. There's a reason why Mark "too-tall" Hendrickson was our Opening Day starter.

Miller is going to make about $1.3 next year. The Marlins are not leaving that in AAA. He, or Anibal, would be shifted to the pen if they brought in someone like Pedro.

What do u mean I didnt have to go that far? I produced a perfectly viable example to agree with what Sirspud said about how pitchers can get injured before the season properly starts.

Is it just me or is Erick trying to start arguments with everyone on here of late?

Huh? I was actually agreeing with you.

Sorry Erick!!!

I agree with your point about Miller, but why can't Anibal hang out in AAA if they signed a Pedro-type? Anibal's arm seems to be ill-suited at this point for work out of the bullpen, and I'd want to give him a chance to get back to form as a starter.

It would be a bad thing to have an all righty rotation, and Anibal may have shown us at the end of last season and his time in the Winter Ball League that he has yet to recover to his '06 self, and we still have to see what Miller can do, just because of how much we gave up to get him.

If you want to go this route, you could argue that Pedro hasn't been 100% healthy since early 2006 when he posted sub-3 ERAs in both April and May before he got hurt in June.

For what it's worth...I was never estatic about signing Pedro. I think he's on the decline, and I would personally pursue another pitcher / a cheaper option.

If we got a Pedro type, I can say with almost 100% confidence that Sanchez would be dangled in front of the Rangers for one of their catchers. If you remember, they asked for him earlier this offseason when we weren't in any position to deal him.

Now that triple-A is no longer in New Mexico, no... he mean AAA.

Nolasco wasn't injured during the season at all last year. He was actually a reliever to start the season, as they felt he was their weakest starter to start the season when we had a 4-man rotation.

Good point. Still though...Nolasco has had injury problems in the past.
