Hanley to bat 3rd

Featured Replies

Hanley batting third is best for the team. I guarantee you if you bat Hermida second in front of Ramirez he will have a much better year that's for sure! He makes everyone in the line up around him better. To me this is more valuable than having his speed in the lead off spot (which is overrated). Last year he did struggle with RISP but that was more an aberration than anything. Besides, he was never really given a chance to get used to it - only lasted a few games batting third.

I Just saw Hanley at fanfest and he definatly got bigger but not fat he became ripped becasue before he moved a few months ago he was small when i first shook his hand, then at fanfest i was like woah, either i got smaller or he got bigger.

Hopefully putting on so much weight in one off season doesn't result in the same way it did for Jeff Francoeur last season.

he was just a disaster last year, partly because he put the weight in the chest area, which is ideal for football players but not really for baseball, instead of the forearms, where it could increase your bat power. was most of hanley's weight gain in one or two areas, or was it in general? that could tell you how his season goes i think.

Hanley's not Jeff Francouer. Period.

A bigger part of Francouer's problem is that he swings at everything. Hanley's a hitter.

He's 25. He's filling his body out.

Yeah when you just turned 25 and now you have millions of dollars chances are your bound to gain weight. He's just developing into a 40HR 120RBI guy.

Why is it that a physically gifted player who is the right age to grow into and fill out his body can't do so? Do you even have a point? Do you know how contractions function?

50HR 130RBI....

This would please me also. If Hanley in the 3 spot doesnt work out, I wonder how long Fredi will give it until he moves him back to leadoff

I'm not worried about it. Hanley's place is batting third. Maybin will be the leadoff hitter but I don't know who will be third. It's between Hermida and Baker. I'd like to see Hermida live up to his potential, he seemed to do well in the second half of 07 in that slot. I think Hermida will end up winning that position in the end. I think the fire's been lit under his ass.

Did Hanley seem all that much bigger at FanFest to anyone? If so, I didn't notice it and I don't think anyone else mentioned it here either.

Maybe we're making more out of this than need be. As for hitting third, especially if he continues to do so at the WBC and gets his wish to hit out of the three hole from day one of ST, I don't have a doubt he'll be successful at it.

It may be a good thing that we have an extended spring training this year.

That what im worried about he put it on in his chest. Hopefully he put some on in his back too.

0/2

Hanley can hit any where. We really can't say where he fits best when nearly half the starting lineup (C, 1B/3B, OF) isn't fully set.

Bonifacio can be a productive player. He has the talent and should be given the chance to fight Cantu and Sanchez for playing time. However, he's no Luiy in his prime (who is?) and I counsel against putting him at leadoff merely because he's fast.

Baker, really? Why? Mark Lemke / Bret Barberie style 2-hole hitters are the worst. Getting that many at bats, and serving as the secondary leadoff hitter, the 2-spot should be one of your best hitters.

Baker IMO would be great in the 2 hole. If our lead off guy can get on he takes alot of pitches giving maybin a chancee to steal plus hes a lefty who could pull the ball in the hole between 2nd and 1st with the 2B playin for the double play and the 1B holding maybin on.

So essentially he's Mark Lemke and Bret Barberie, except that he plays C rather than 2B. So probably slower and at greater risk for injuries. Throw in a catcher's inconsistent playing time, and you add streaky hitting. Sound like a good 2-hole hitter?

Who else should they put 2nd then? Hermida? Baker did pretty well towards the end of last season when he batted 2nd, so why not keep doing it?

He had the 2nd best .OBP on the team last year, at .392. But you're right...what a silly idea.

Honestly right now if it would come to that then we couldn't put Hermida or Baker there because although they have the potential they both are both unproven but Baker did have sucess in his stint in the 2 spot last year so it would be the best option unless you want to move Uggla back in there or Maybe Cantu which is less likely.

The two spot hitter should be a guy like Luis Castillo, who can put up good OBP numbers.

.293/.370/.356

.299/.392/.447

One of those is Castillo, one of those is Baker. I'll let you guess which one. Now, I'm not saying he's going to keep those numbers up, but I don't get why you are discounting it so easily after he put up those numbers.

Also, just to go to your Barberie argument, when he hit in the 2-spot for us, he hit .298/.375/.408. What exactly are you complaining about?

Baker is the #2 hitter.

-He's patient

-He gets on base

-He makes contact, for the most part...considering this is a team that K's a lot, Baker's the best option here.

If you see / hear Hanley's quote, he talks about how there's more pressure on him this year b/c he now, along with Cantu and Uggla, will be counted on to drive in runs. Then he also says it's the job of the #1 / #2 hitters to get on base for them (something Baker showed all last year that he can do better than anyone on this team, not named Hanley). Of course, Hanley mentioned Bonifacio (someone who shouldn't be hitting 2nd any time soon b/c he's the opposite of what I just said about Baker).
