Three more players were sent down on Friday.

 

Reassigned to Minor League camp were reliever Henry Owens, outfielder John Raynor and catcher Brad Davis.

 

With Davis being sent down, that leaves three catchers in camp.

 

John Baker will handle the starting role. Manager Fredi Gonzalez says the backup position remains wide open. Mike Rabelo and Brett Hayes are in contention.

I thought Raynor may have a chance as a reserve OF but the strong play of Brett Carroll recently suggests that he may have won that role

I thought Raynor mighta made the team guess not.

The way Carroll is playing, Raynor going down was expected.

 

That said, I think Carroll might play a big part in this upcoming season.

I've seen Hayes a few games this Spring and he looks pretty comfortable behind the plate. Nice mechanics. Wouldn't surprise me if he wins that back up role.

Not that it matters a whole lot but does Owens still have a 50 game suspension to serve or did he do it last year? I would like to see him build up some arm strength and be back sometime in the not so distant future. Raynor certainly opened some eyes, he looks like he's still a year away.

Fredi pisses me off so those are more points for BC... BC has been the most oustanding player of ST, along with Hermida. Raynor will be back! He plays exciting baseball and he can sure hit (He is no fluke!) He can get the strikeouts down we would be talking rookie of the year type performance. Owens minor league stay will be a short one as well. BTW Hayes has outplayed Rabelo this ST

Raynor was really a last resort option for the bench. He's going to benefit from a bit more minor league time but I'm sure the fact that he impressed this spring is going to help him and it won't be too long before he is back.

Agreed. The second someone goes down, Raynor's going to be the first one getting the call. I would say Cousins, but he's clearly being groomed for a starting role. Raynor is not IMO.

Well, in the long run I'd agree with you. I think Sanchez is out of the big picture and more of a short term solution, making Logan the guy being groomed for first. Then you have Cousins going to left and eventually Stanton in right.

 

And they're going to put Stanton in Jupiter and see how he handles the FSL. If he can crush the ball there for a little bit, no doubt I think he's up in double-A for the second half of the minor league season. If he kills it there, too, September with the Marlins anyone?

I just read the plan right now is for him to spend the season in Jupiter. Dominguez too. Of course plans can change. But there is no need to rush the kids.

I'm unsure of his speed rating on the 20-80 scale, but he runs a 6.8 60 yard dash

It's only befuddling because you consistently don't understand player development (see wanting to rush Logan as well). You become enamored with our top prospects and want them up NOW, not realizing they are incredibly young, incredibly flawed, and need to get in a lot of work before being expected to contribute on a MLB roster.

 

Being in a pitcher's ballpark is EXACTLY what Mike Stanton needs. We need to see him respond to an adverse condition. Mike Stanton will be 19 years old all of the 2009 season. He is already young for his level. Why you want to jump him to AA, and have him be feasted on breaking pitches is unknown. He has under 598 professional AB, and he has struck out in almost over 1/3rd of them (174). His natural progression is to be in Jupiter despite his upside, and get the reps against similar competition. This isn't a college player like Raynor where you can just jump him a level. This kid needs to go level by level. If he spends a year in Jupiter, a year in Jacksonville, and then 3 months in AAA, he's still making his big league debut at 21 years old. That, would be awesome. I mean, really awesome, if he is that good.

 

Let's not anoint him emperor just yet shall we. The Marlins are doing 100% the right thing.

Yes. If Cousins pans out, he should be an .800-.825 OPSing outfielder with plus plus defense and a 20 SB threat. He could be a pretty solid player. You'd probably want him in RF over Stanton (if we assume Maybin and Stanton are both locks, and Cousins is the 3rd best longterm outfielder in the organization), but we'll have to see how Stanton progresses out there as well.

 

Don't forget Bryan Petersen too. He's got a lot of potential to break out this year and be totally awesome. Cousins, Petersen, and Burns is a really interesting AA outfield.

I kinda see it more as retarding their development. It is not written anywhere all prospects have to have a season at every step of the minors in order to be eligible to play in the majors. The prospects can be moved along depending on their specific needs...You dont have to develop Mike Stanton the same way you are developing Jai Miller. Mike Stanton is more ready now than Jai Miller because of difference in talent level. Now if you wanna compare Jai to Brett Carroll then you want that slow steady progression through the system
