April 18, 200917 yr I love the Kevin Gregg Matt Lindstrom comparisons in the game threads. These two aren't even close in comparison. Gregg walked everybody and they usually ended up scoring hence his demotion in the Cubs bullpen. Yeah Matt might giv up a couple hits here and there but he usually doesn't walk folks. It's nice to see him reach back and find a couple strikeouts too.
April 18, 200917 yr You don't get beat with your second pitch. If you throw 98 you dominate and take your chances. If he tries to throw a slider and some guy dinks one in, everyone would be wondering why he didn't throw fastballs. If you watched the game, the Nats had no chance on the fastball once Matt got in a rhythm. I say blow fastballs and if they beat you, tip your cap. Don't get beat on your second best pitch.
April 18, 200917 yr once he found his control he was pretty strong, but did Lindstrom throw anything other than fastballs? Don't be afraid to mix it up a little Matt... That's all Baker calls. It's easy to catch a fastball. I'd like to see him throw more offspeed but whatever works I guess. Lindstrom has 3 catchers that have caught him for more than 100 PAs. His OPS against with those catchers: Baker: .600 Olivo: .653 Treanor: .693

Good way to look at it. :thumbup I didn't see the game live but if they couldn't touch the fastball then why not throw it?

Lou was already warming up Marmol because the Cubs were down but Soriano hit a homer to put them ahead. Marmol was already ready so that's who Lou used.
April 18, 200917 yr Well I've heard baker on radio saying he likes to call alot of fastball with matt since he throws so hard.
April 18, 200917 yr I just want to say that this was a great game and a great win for our marlins. Its these kinds of wins that really build up a teams momentum. we stole this one from the nats. i wish i had a video of when lindstrom struck out gonzalez to end the game... the way he and baker were all pumped up. im still pumped up! im pretty sure when lindstrom high-fived cantu he said "f*** ya baby" i want that video lol.
April 18, 200917 yr I voted for Cody for one reason: If he made an out in the 9th, chances are Marlins lose 2 to 1 to the Nationals
April 18, 200917 yr Well I've heard baker on radio saying he likes to call alot of fastball with matt since he throws so hard. He does the same with a lot of guys. Bake just like strikes so he calls a lot of 1s. The only guy I seen him call a good number of offspeed stuff in Leo, but that's because his changeup is the sickness.

I did watch the game. Dukes nearly hit one out. I don't think Matt got into a rhythm until the last batter. Flores sat there and watched fastballs go right down the middle. But if you've watched Lindstrom over any stretch of time you've seen him get rocked at times because people know what's coming. Good MLB hitters can hit fastballs, even at 97. You saw what Dukes did with it. I'm nitpicking of course, I think he'll be a dynamite closer. And I'm sure he'll feature 100 mph fastballs, which he should. I just want him to have a second pitch available. On another note, it was good to see that Lindstrom had that kind of heat going back-to-back days.
April 18, 200917 yr My heart can't take much more of this :lol An "ugly" win, but an exciting one. I'll take it.

True but I remember him saying when he caught matt when he got sent down last year he told matt were gonna throw lots of fastballs and don't be afraid to use it.

I'm not dissing Gregg at all in fact I think he is a classy guy. I just read something from Lou that Gregg walks too many. Doesn't really matter if Marmol is warmed up IMO, if Gregg is the closer it doesn't take too long to warm him up. Marmol would have been my choice as well.

It's worked so far, so I ain't gonna complain about his pitch selection... I love attacking the strike zone, imho, I'd rather throw a bunch of fastballs in the strike zone then pitchers nibbling at the corners and walking people. I like feeling some confidence that, in a 2-1/2-2 count, there is a good chance that the batter wont be walked. It's the worst feeling in the world to sit there thinking "Okay, Gregg, PLEASE don't walk this guy..."

No, I didn't watch the game, but that was the reason reported as to why Gregg didn't close and Lou just said like 4 games ago that he doesn't like to sit guys after he warms them up. I do agree that Marmol is better though.
April 18, 200917 yr Easy vote tonight, imo. Coming into the season, I thought the bullpen would be the biggest weakness, and I still think it is, but they've been awesome, lately. I'm not taking back what I said on the gamethread, either. I was the one who used the Lindstrom-Gregg comparison. That's not a horrible thing, either. Despite the criticisms, Gregg isn't a terrible reliever. That's what I think of Lindstrom...I think he's average. It's nice to see him get the 1 run save tonight (for the team, itself, and my fantasy team, as well), but I still don't trust him. He was about a foot away from blowing it on Elijah Dukes' shot. He's extremely predictable right now, and while you don't want to get beat on your second pitch when you throw 98...it's always nice to mix it up a bit. He'd be better off if he threw his slider every once in awhile, and he'd be better if he used his splitter against left-handed hitters. I have more confidence in Leo Nunez.

April 18, 200917 yr The bullpen is definitely the "fish of the game" for this one. Cody's home run was definitely awesome, but if not for the bullpen's spectacular pitching, it would have been all for naught.
April 18, 200917 yr I love Hayden Pen' pitching performance. He could throw a max 93-mile four-sim fastball, and 80s mile changeup. Most impressive thing are, He had big nasty 70s mile curveball. Very effective pitching style for long reliever.

April 18, 200917 yr YIPPIE! What a win. This is a game we could have easily lost, and probably should have. Great to see us dig deep and come up big when it counts. Grit and determination are very important qualities for a team looking to make a playoff run and tonight we showed both. I was sitting pretty close to the left foul pole, and had some observations/questions for people watching at home: 1. The Cody jack was so clutch. Off the bat, I thought it was a fly out for sure, but my buddy said it had a chance, and then I saw it delicately drop just above the wall and just fair of the foul marker and started going berserk. How did it look off the bat? Did the announcers think it was gone? 2. What happened with Nolasco? Was he as bad as he looked from the stands? It seemed like he could not locate and when he did, the Nats knew exactly where he was going. He was not fooling anyone tonight, yet he kept us in the game only giving up 2 runs. Lannan pitched a gem. Was our hitting horrible or does the kid deserve some credit? I feel like its the latter. 3. Why the hell did the Nats double switch out Adam Dunn? I understand he plays poor defense, but you are sort of putting all you eggs in one basket. Getting Hanrahan as the 3rd out in the bottom of the 9th was very fortunate. Questionable move. 4. I was wearing my #24 Cabrera shirt with a Maybin printed-out-at-home nameplate taped over Cab's. The copy paper fell off sometime after Maybin's 2nd strikeout. But he came on a bit stronger at the end of the game. 5. Only had two beers, had to come home an study (post) :thumbdown 6. Solid night from the bullpen as well. Great to see. Those guys have a few W's already this season. Overall, it was a great night at the park. Got some free baseball, saw an exciting game. Best of all, Marlins are 9-1 for the best start in franchise history. Today is a happy Friday for Fish fans. Savor it.
April 18, 200917 yr Fun stuff from a Nats forum: Forfeit the rest of the games we have against the Marlins this season. No way we'll ever beat them. I'd rather sandpaper my sack before watching another game between these two teams.
April 18, 200917 yr and we have JJ and Vostad coming up. :o I seriously laughed when I saw this. This smilie :o is amazing and so is JJ and Volstad.

I, too, jumped for joy (inside, not literally, as I have a fractured femur) when it went over the wall. 2. Nolasco had a weird night. He kinda looked dominant at times. Curveball looked great, but he couldn't locate his fastball. He was probably lucky that he only allowed the 2 runs. Lannan pitched well; he had our # tonight. 3. I thought Dunn was coming up in the 9th to face Nunez...when I saw Kearns I was happy. Although Kearns did have a great AB before Leo got him to K on the heater.
