Posted April 18, 200916 yr Even at 9-1 it's still too early to say anything, but say the Marlins are on top of the NL East at the All Star break. With the new stadium coming (hopefully giving Loria the incentive of more revenue in the future), is there a chance any of the Marlins will be offered long term deals a la Hanley? And who?
April 18, 200916 yr Josh Johnson will be. Yea, I think if we're in it at the All-Star break, they may pull a Hanley and double-up the ground breaking ceremony with a JJ deal announcement.
April 18, 200916 yr Even at 9-1 it's still too early to say anything, but say the Marlins are on top of the NL East at the All Star break. With the new stadium coming (hopefully giving Loria the incentive of more revenue in the future), is there a chance any of the Marlins will be offered long term deals a la Hanley? And who? I've thought the greater likelihood is that if the Marlins are contending or dare I say atop the NL East you'll see ownership spend what they need to give the team the greatest chance of success possible. It's pennies on the dollar when you're talking about pre-selling corporate box seats and skyboxes, not to mention the marketing and promotional good will being associated with a winner creates. But to your question, Uggla is quietly putting together a very good start and if it continues - and ownership sees a marketing value to having him here and signing him through 2012 - they will. And the same goes for Johnson, Volstad, others etc. Once they get past the July financing hurdle and they really don't need to be as careful about the potential PR backlash of "billionaire owners and millionaire players..." I'm guessing things loosen up payroll-wise.
April 18, 200916 yr With JJ, I would love to see him locked up, although he still does have an injury history. Still, we're probably not going a discount at this point, so year-to-year might just be best. Volstad is a different story, though. We could probably get through his arbitration years and maybe even 1-2 FA years, and that would be great. Maybin hasn't earned it so far, and they're also probably not saving any money on Uggla. And even if they sign him instead of yearly arbitration hearings, that doesn't mean that they can't or won't trade him.
April 18, 200916 yr They will NOT lock up Uggla, nor should they. He's at the tail-end of his peak, and they have Chris Coghlan waiting in the wings.
April 18, 200916 yr I always should :banghead myself when I use names, although I wouldn't mind seeing him here, because names always get in the way of the message.
April 18, 200916 yr Josh Johnson will be. this not too many players are going to get long term contracts, but the Marlins want to build off of great starting pitching going into the new stadium. JJ will without a doubt be that first pitcher to get a long term contract imo. Chris Volstad should get his just before we go to the new stadium, and we will work our ways from there. I always hope that there isn't another firesale or what Loria would call a "market correction", but you always have to be out on the lookout for it.
April 18, 200916 yr You give Johnson a 5 year contract after the year if you think his arm holds up, and you consider Hermida, Miller, Anibal, and Nolasco if they really break out with star quality years. If not, just take them all to arbitration. With emphasis, I say take Uggla to arbitration and do not sign him to a 4+ year contract. We do not need to be guaranteeing $12+ million to a 33 year old Dan Uggla. It will kill us. In the end, I expect us to just sign Johnson this offseason, take Nolasco, Hermida, Miller, one of Uggla/Cantu, Lindstrom, Nunez, and Anibal to arbitration, and then trade off our other arbitration eligible players - Ross, Amezaga, Uggla/Cantu, Kensing, Pinto, and Tank. After 2010, you make evaluations on Maybin and Volstad and see if they need 5-6 year deals. I'm very hopeful on this, as this is going to be the biggest moment for the future of the franchise. They need to start buying out the young studs arbitration + first 1-2 free agency years, BEFORE, they become arbitration eligible. They waited 1-2 years to long to give Hanley a deal. I do not want that to happen again with other stud players. And that's it. Nothing major. We have to keep the books organized and just because we have a new stadium doesn't mean we should be dishing out contracts because we can. I don't think anyone is arguing that, but it's still important to state. Any deal needs to make sense, because a year or two into that stadium Morrison, Stanton, Dominguez, West, Coghlan, Bonifacio, G. Sanchez, Cousins, Thompson, Tucker, Ceda, etc, are all going to be in arbitration and we need to be ready for that enormous salary jump coming. Here is a mock 2012 payroll with pieces we currently have C John Baker $3,000,000 < - First year arbitration 1B Logan Morrison $430,000 < - Arbitration eligible 2013, hopefully is awesome and bought out post 2011 through 2016/2017 2B Chris Coghlan $430,000 < - Arbitration eligible 2013 3B Matt Dominguez $420,000 < - Arbitration eligible 2014, think about buying out after 2012 season SS Hanley Ramirez $15,000,000 < - Signed through 2014 LF Mike Stanton $410,000 < - Arbitration eligible 2014, think about buying out after 2012 season RF Scott Cousins $430,000 < - Arbitration eligible 2013 CF Cameron Maybin $3,000,000 < - First year arbitration, hopefully he is bought out through 2015/2016 B Emilio Bonifacio $1,500,000 < - First year arbitration B Brett Hayes $430,000 < - Arbitration eligible 2013 B John Raynor $430,000 < - Arbitration eligible 2013 B Gaby Sanchez $410,000 < - Arbitration eligible 2013 B ?Vet 2B/SS/3B" $1,000,000 SP Josh Johnson $12,000,000 < - First Free Agency, hopefully signed through 2014 SP Chris Volstad $3,000,000 < - First year arbitration, hopefully he is bought out through 2015/2016 SP Andrew Miller $6,500,000 < - Third year arbitration, hopefully is awesome and bought out through 2014 SP Sean West $430,000 < - Arbitration eligible 2013, hopefully is awesome and bought out post 2011 through 2016/2017 SP Brad Hand $410,000 < - Arbitration eligible 2015 RP Ryan Tucker $430,000 < - Arbitration eligible 2013 RP Jose Ceda $430,000 < - Arbitration eligible 2013 RP Chris Leroux $420,000 < - Arbitration eligible 2014 RP CC RHP $420,000 RP CC RHP $410,000 RP Aaron Thompson $420,000 < - Arbitration eligible 2013 RP CC LHP $410,000 $52,170,000 < - Now imagine if they had signed Uggla, Hermida, and Nolasco to 4- 5 year contracts in 2010, and each is being paid over $10-12 million. That almost doubles real fast. We would be screwed with huge contracts and 10-12 pending huge arbitration/contract jumps in 2013, and having to resign Hanley which could be terrifying amounts of money. Unless of course you think payroll is going to $100 million. Then by all means, sign everyone because who cares about accountability with that much money.
April 18, 200916 yr Hopefully people in SoFla start coming out to the games and support the team; if not, then we'll start hearing the same ol' stories from ownership about how there's no support and that they can't lock any one up because of revenue, etc., etc.

April 18, 200916 yr i think johnson and volstad are the most likely because they could get a discount in signing volstad early on like the rays did with longoria.
April 18, 200916 yr The team should be very careful how it handles its players from now until the stadium opens. It's to their benefit to have a contending team moving in to the new ballpark.
April 18, 200916 yr Right now its gotta be JJ and Volstad. Id love for uggla to get one but i can see why they wouldnt. If we are atop the nl east by the AS it will be interesting to see whos available.
April 18, 200916 yr The disrespect Ricky Nolasco receives on this board and throughout the media amazes me. To answer the question...It would be 1 of the pitchers. However, it amazes me how much Josh Johnson and Chris Volstad have been mentioned, yet Nolasco's name has popped up once in one of Lou's thought out posts. Why is that?

Erick, it is because fans in the sports world today has a very what-have-you-done-for-me-lately attitude to today's athletes. Partially caused by Sports Center and the constant need for new information and opinions. Needless to say, the list of top pitchers in the league does not dramatically change on a daily (or weekly) basis, and Ricky is on that list. Nevertheless, this trend towards weather-vane-ing is evidenced up and down these forums in every conceivable incarnation. One of these is being down on Ricky because he has disappointed so far this season. I am not saying its right, in fact, I believe the opposite. But as far as you asking the question of "why"... well, I contend that you already knew the answer. Also, a talented pitcher having a down year (not that we have even come close to this point with NolasKo) actually makes it MORE likely that our organization will retain him. These are the counter-intuitive rules by which our frugal organization plays.

April 18, 200916 yr I do not want to limit the scope of discussion, but notice that the thread (sort of) presupposes that recent trends continue. No one is deserving of anything 11 games into the season. The question remains as to who will be the likely candidates for players we want to lock down once the time is right for those sort of moves.

I say Nolasco, JJ, Volstad, and MAYBE Hermida. Ross, Uggla, Cantu, Bonafacio, and baker are replaceable.
