Coghlan

If Coghlan can get on base like he has in the minors...

Coghlan

Hermida

Hanley

Cantu

Uggla

Baker

Maybin

Ross

But Hermida probably won't be in the 2, and Coghlan probably not leading off because the obsession with Speed > On-base with lead off men baseball.

I can see a very LaRussa like lineup, with this basic pattern.

1. Whoever

2. Baker vs RHP / Hermida vs LHP

3. Hanley

4. Cantu

5. Hermida vs RHP / Paulino vs LHP

6. Uggla vs RHP / Ross vs LHP

7. Ross vs RHP / Uggla vs LHP

8. Whoever

Then just take your pick of who is playing between Bonifacio, Coghlan, Maybin, and Amezaga for the last 2 spots. I'd like to see Coghlan and Maybin get 4 starts a week each, Bonifacio 3-4, and Amezaga 2-3. That sounds about right.

Even though Coghlan seems like a good two hole guy, I don't see how we can move Baker with the way he's been producing.

As Lou said, I'm predicting Coghlan shares time in the leadoff spot with Amezaga and Maybin.

Baker should hit 2nd, always. We should stop trying to find the 'perfect #2 hitter' when we already have an excellent #2 hitter.

Also, Uggla can play 3B, he has the arm and the good reactions, but I don't think they are going to move him there.

Maybin

Baker

Ramirez

Cantu

Hermida

Uggla

Ross

Coghlin

Btw, makes me wonder why they say that he'll play 2B, in the article.

Maybe it's just me, but I get the feeling that Uggla will sit one of these games in Colorado.

They mentioned 2B/OF, yet there was no mention of 3B. I don't like it.

He is going to start at second tonight and then go to the OF from there playing second just to give Uggla the night off.

I hope he is that spark that we need

Me too.

And I also hope he gets consistant ABs. He probably won't start immediately, and maybe this is meant to put pressure on Maybin/Boni to see if they can step up, but Coghlan won't help us riding the pine.

"put pressure on Maybin/Boni/Ross/Uggla/Hermida" Just about no one on the team is hitting. And yet all the blame goes to Maybin and Boni. Maybin I'm a little worried about. But Boni is looking more comfortable in his ABs the last couple weeks. His Ks are also down. And his D is very good. He gets more of the learning curve. Just another one of those times you can't always look at the stats.

Why can't Baker hit second?

(Not you Lou)

Because I'm not ready to let go of my man-crush on Hermida in the 2 hole.

Kinda hard to pick which one. Both do better in the 2 hole than they do elsewhere.

Agreed. When Paulino is catching, virtually after Cantu we've currently seven guaranteed outs in a row, yet Boni & Maybin are getting a dis-proportionate amount of flak. Uggla, Hermida & Ross have all been largely terrible over the past two weeks yet I don't hear screams for them to be sent down.

That would be like the Yankees sending Teixiera down since he's been struggling mightily aswell. The thing with the likes of Uggla, Hermida and Cody is that they are established major leagues players and have showed they can play good at this level so it would be of no benefit of them to play in the minors.

As bad as he has been I also don't believe it would do much good for Maybin to play in the minors, he needs to get used to and adjust to major league pitching. He obviously has all the tools necessary to be a great player but a little patience is needed before he demonstrates his talent on a regular basis.

The same about needing to see and adjust to major league pitching could be said about Bonifacio, however he was never an elite prospect and to be honest, his bat doesn't have much potential. Quite simply he is a major league bench player and so should be utilised in such a role.

Actually, I agree that Boni's been looking better than his stats, and Maybin isn't as bad as his line would indicate. I would not send either one down quite yet (more on that in a moment). However, both Boni and Maybin are young and unproven, and the question is, how long should the Marlins wait around for them to adjust to their learning curve. Maybe they adjust quicker now that they see the Marlins making moves to help the offense. The leash gets a little shorter. There is no greater motivator than the possibility of losing your job (not that I think these guys are unmotivated). It is a fine line though to walk between pushing them forward and pushing them into the ground. You don't want them to press now that a "replacement" is called up. On the flipside, there is no guarantee that Coghlan procudes better than these guys, good minor league numbers and all. Which is why Boni and Maybin should stay up, barring an even bigger slide.

On the subject of Uggla et al, as others have said, you have a track record with those guys. You can somewhat predict what they will eventually do (season long slumps ala Lowell, notwithstanding). That's what the Marlins are trying to figure out with Boni and Maybin. Are they overmatched? Or are they adjusting? If they are overmatched, let's have Coghlan, just in case.

Well, I agree that Bonafacio needs to be replaced at third, but the Marlins have a second baseman that needs a trip to AAA too. Uggla has been putrid ... and this about a guy who normally starts hot and then plods to the finish line. I would bring a bunch of minor leaguers up, including the outfielder Ryan, who is hitting .358 to replace Maybin. I just don't see anything good about Maybin, Bonafacio, or Uggla right now. Adios.

I don't know why everyone seems to be bashing Bonerface. I'm almost certain that he's doing better than Maybin, and hasn't looked lost out on defense. I haven't checked their stats in the past week, but Bonerface as bad as he's looked, has still looked better than Cameron. At least bonerface showed some greatness at the beginning of the year. Maybin hasn't shown anything this year.

All I have seen from Maybin are bad throws, and even some bad routes. He doesn't look like he's gliding and getting to all the balls that he should and normally has gotten to. I don't know if it's "his confidence" or what. But he had a shot to nail a runner at the plate the other game and threw it in to the mound. It appears as if he has no arm at all. And if he does, he isn't showing it off. I'd much rather see anyone else in center right now.

I think moat of maybins problems are from the neck up. He looks like he out thinks himself at the plate.

I think Maybin's been fine in the outfield. Not great, not bad. I sooo want him to get going with the bat. We've got to be patient though, can't expect every prospect, even the big ones, to come out swinging like Cabrera and Hanley. Just doesn't work that way.

If Coghlan can handle 3B I'd like to see him get some starts in place of Bonifacio. Not real keen on moving the outfield around, unless it's just to give them a rest once in a while.

Maybin looked atrocious the other day. Tommy even stated how he expected Maybin to make the catch. He stutter stepped a step away from where the ball landed. As if he gave up on even trying to catch it when it was well within reach. To then a few plays later have a horrible throw that would have nailed the runner. At least if he would have maybe hit his cut off man. Instead, he threw it to the mound where Cantu cut it off. If it would have hit the mound, who knows where it would have gone. My father had been complaining about Maybin's throws all season long. I ignored it and told him he was wrong. But now, I'm starting to see what he meant. It's as if he doesn't care out there anymore. He's lacking concentration and shouldn't be on the field. As where Bonerface has actually made a lot of stellar plays. He does have some errors, but they were physical errors as where Cameron has made mental errors that aren't shown on the stat sheet.

Or not:

March / April

2006: .253 .319 .410 .729

2007: .219 .294 .429 .725

2008: .255 .333 .480 .813

2009: .218 .322 .423 .745

So except for last year, this time around is better than the norm before May 1

Now he has stunk thus far in May (all 8 days of it), but I expect if he hit an upper deck blast, a seagull would swoop from the sky and knock it down into the glove of the LF.

but remember he could be good in minors but not ready to go in big league could this move cost someone job like Dan Uggla or third baseman Emilio Bonifacio, Cameron Maybin, Jeremy Hermida ,Cody Ross,

Coghlan is not being promoted to bench anyone at this point.

IMO, Fredi probably has the longest leach of any managers...remember Julio?

Coghlan coming through

Chris Coghlan is posting numbers that are too good to ignore.

A sandwich first-round pick in 2006, Coghlan has raised his batting average to .344 at Triple-A New Orleans. Through 25 games and 96 at-bats, he has three homers, 22 RBIs, nine doubles and a triple.

A left-handed hitter, he has walked 12 times and struck out 10. Plus he's stolen nine bases to go along with a .418 on-base and .552 slugging percentage.

For most of his Minor League career, he has played either second base or third base. What's interesting is on Thursday night, he was in left field.

To purely speculate, if the Marlins are thinking of making a move, and promote Coghlan as a left fielder, that could mean a couple of things. ((It may mean the organization is looking to give Cameron Maybin some more seasoning in the Minor Leagues.))

In that scenario, Cody Ross could move to center field, with Alfredo Amezaga as a platoon option. And Jeremy Hermida could move from left field to right field.

Again, this is just speculation, but some things to consider.

Coghlan isn't known for power, but he's a talented hitter, and he could hit either first or second in the order. He's been batting third for the Zephyrs.

1 Maybin

2 Coghlan (the perfect #2 hitter as you will soon find out)

3 Ramirez

4 Cantu

5 Baker

6 Uggla

7 Hermida

8 Ross

- Simple as that.
