Hopefully he gets consistent at bats. I suppose they wouldn't be calling him up to sit on the bench, so he's going to be starting someplace. It'll be interesting to see who goes down when we need another pitcher.

The main thing I like about this move is that the organisation has realised things arent going to plan and are willing to make moves to try and inject some energy into the team

Tired of watching their offense continue to sputter, the Marlins are reaching down to their minor-league system in hopes of finding a fix. Chris Coghlan, one of the organization's top prospects, is being called up from Triple A New Orleans and will join the Marlins in Denver on Friday. As Bob Fortus of the New Orleans Times-Picayune is reporting, Coghlan will take the roster spot belonging to pitcher Anibal Sanchez, who is headed to the disabled list after leaving Thursday's game with shoulder discomfort.

 

Coghlan, 23, is a natural infielder who has split time this season between second and third base. But he started in left field for the Zephyrs on Thursday, a possible indication that the Marlins might tinker a little with him, perhaps as an occasional replacement for one of the team's three slumping outfielders: Cameron Maybin, Jeremy Hermida or Cody Ross. Coghlan could also spell time for either second baseman Dan Uggla or third baseman Emilio Bonifacio, both of whom are also struggling.

 

As Marlins vice president of player personnel Dan Jennings told Fortus: "He's going to play some in the outfield and some at second base. He's one of those kids who has always had the knack to get the barrel to the ball, from high school to Ole Miss all the way through the system.''

 

Coghlan is swinging a hot bat for the Zephyrs, hitting .348 with three homers and 22 RBI in 92 at bats. Last season, Coghlan hit .298 at Double A Carolina and stole 34 bases.

 

One American League scout told me that Coghlan is one of his favorite players to watch in the minors.

 

'I absolutely love him," the scout said. "I have a gut feel for him. He's going to hit. Defense is going to be average, but he's better than Uggla. This guy has got the potential to be an above-average second baseman, No. 2 hitter or a quality No. 8 hitter. I love the way he goes about the game. There's no downside to this kid."

difference is it sounds like from the article that he will be more of a utility player this season than a fixed position player. Seems like they are just testing the waters, going to see what this kid can do, hell what can it hurt? And Coughlan will get some starts early with so many guys struggling, I'm fascinated to see what Coughlan can do.

He better start instead of Bonafacio. Play him at third and let him hit leadoff.

And I also hope he gets consistant ABs. He probably won't start immediately, and maybe this is meant to put pressure on Maybin/Boni to see if they can step up, but Coghlan won't help us riding the pine.

glad to see this team is addressing the hitting problems of the team... who knows if it will pan out but its a change and change was needed

Why? Coughlan is older, more developed, has spent an entire year in AA and is lighting AAA on fire.

 

And it's kind of pointless to call up a guy with a fractured wrist/thumb (did we ever get confirmation on which it is?)

 

From the sounds of it, this more-so ends the current Maybin tryout, since Jennings said he'd be playing LF and OF (so common deduction would be that we go with a OF of Coghlan/Ross/Hermida) and didn't mention 3b.

I had no idea. Need to keep up with the Marlins minor league players more, damn, sucks that both Morrison and Sanchez are injured.

i seriously hope they consider him to play 3rd...Boni is just not cutting it with the bat...fielding is a different story...boni has been very good at 3rd

Well, by "legit," I meant Morrison was a top-tier prospect. Coghlan is just a solid prospect.

This should be fun, excited to see him get to play. Saw him play in Spring Training during the Astros televised game and i enjoyed it.
