May 7, 200917 yr I am divided about calling up a rookie/minor leaguer to replace a demoted Boni or Maybin. If they (meaning the callup) struggles, how long should we wait for them to turn it around? The same amount of time we gave Boni or Maybin? So, say it is tomorrow, into June? And if they fail, what do we do next? Hope Boni and Maybin figured it out in the minors and call them back up? It may start a merry-go-around. On the other hand, maybe this team needs a spark.

Better off calling up DeAza He's naturally an average defensive 3B... they moved him to 2B because his bat wasn't quite up to par as a 3B and fit better at 2B. He can play either position competently though. And, he'd probably be a better/more valuable choice that De Aza

May 7, 200917 yr Coghlan played 3B in college and was only moved to 2B in the minors as his bat does not project for power (as in, 3B is typically a power slot). He has been playing a lot of 3B in NOLA this year however, as it seems the Marlins are starting to groom him for a variety of roles in the infield. Coghlan has a really nice season line, but he really struggled in April (.731 OPS) and literally in 6 days of May (1.889 OPS, lol) has risen his OPS over 250 points into "awesome" territory. I don't think he's ready yet for day to day action in replacing Bonifacio. And yes, I realize Bonifacio is horrible, but I'm more concerned with developing Coghlan over the long haul than trying to jump start production right now. Maybe another 2 months at minimum. And you can also add in the arbitration factor here, as Coghlan is probably going to become a fixture on this team either as the starting 2B or as an infield reserve, and we might as well delay his pay day a year and wait till at least mid June to call him up.

It's just so stressful to watch somebody like Bonifacio strikeout or ground out in almost EVERY plate appearance. I mean the guy is absolutely awful with the bat. He's this years Chris Shelton.

Bonifacio 1st week (7 games) = .485 AVG, 5 RBI and 4 SB Since (21 games) = .172 AVG, 1 RBI and 2 SB He is as you say, absolutely awful with the bat. A one week period raised some of our hopes but the reality is he cant hit for sh*t. His speed is his best asset but due to his shortcomings with the bat he cannot utilise the best aspect of his game. I will give him some credit for his defence but the general consensus here is that he is NOT a MLB starer and it is easy to see why.

I don't know that the Marlins "are" committed to playing him at second so much as they "were". This season he's playing a lot of third base (and much better than the last couple of times he was tried there) and with Gaby out he's going to see even more playing time there until he ultimately gets a call. His big problem at 2nd was around the bag and if moving to third diminishes that as an issue all the better. As for Morrison and other players being mentioned as "out of position" in theoretical callups, usually those ideas came from outside this messageboard either by Marlins decision-makers (FO, etc.) or beat reporters who one would think got the idea from speaking to someone with the club or a scout or talent evaluator. I've mentioned Morrison for example as a outfielder, but only because it appeared in print beforehand from a credible source. edit: let me correct myself...just for the heck of it I went back and checked where CC has played the last week and it's back at 2nd base, so maybe the 3rd base experiment is over or they figured out what they needed to know.

I think you'll agree with me here that "what they needed to know" was that he was competent at either position and just want to make sure he can fill the inevitable need at either position

May 7, 200917 yr Coughlin will join the team on Friday.... Tired of watching their offense continue to sputter, the Marlins are reaching down to their minor-league system in hopes of finding a fix. Chris Coghlan, one of the organization's top prospects, is being called up from Triple A New Orleans and will join the Marlins in Denver on Friday. As Bob Fortus of the New Orleans Times-Picayune is reporting, Coghlan will take the roster spot belonging to pitcher Anibal Sanchez, who is headed to the disabled list after leaving Thursday's game with shoulder discomfort. Coghlan, 23, is a natural infielder who has split time this season between second and third base. But he started in left field for the Zephyrs on Thursday, a possible indication that the Marlins might tinker a little with him, perhaps as an occasional replacement for one of the team's three slumping outfielders: Cameron Maybin, Jeremy Hermida or Cody Ross. Coghlan could also spell time for either second baseman Dan Uggla or third baseman Emilio Bonifacio, both of whom are also struggling. As Marlins vice president of player personnel Dan Jennings told Fortus: "He's going to play some in the outfield and some at second base. He's one of those kids who has always had the knack to get the barrel to the ball, from high school to Ole Miss all the way through the system.''
