This is just to give Dan a day to think and rest, he's in an atrocious slump. Coghlan can also play 3rd and I imagine that he will eventually take over the 3B position in our roster.

We traded a FUTURE HOF for a bunch of AAA players.

May 9, 200917 yr and even as well as he played, the radio guys mentioned that some of his swings looked very un-Coghlan-like, based on what they saw from him in spring training. He was swinging wildly or maybe trying too hard.

Hell no, they sent his ass down. Wait...excuse me? They gave him time? How'd that turn out? He was 23rd in MVP voting that year? Wow. (Note, I'm not saying Maybin is going to be 23rd in MVP voting, I'm just pointing out that some people need to chill out and let time pass.)
May 9, 200917 yr I agree. It's easy to forget that Miller and Maybin are still really, really young. We've been spoiled with the meteroric rise of Willis, Cabrera and Volstad, who made it to the majors and succeeded at 20 or 21 years of age. Some players, like Uggla, don't break out until they are 26 years old! If Miller and Maybin are still struggling a couple of years from now, then we've got issues...
May 9, 200917 yr I'm gonna play this game because I like it. When he was 21 years old, in his first season, after 25 games, Cal Ripken Jr was hitting a pathetic .184/.211/.333! That's worse than Maybin! And did the Orioles send him down? HELL YEAH! Wait...they didn't? How'd he do? Rookie of the Year, ey? Probably lucky, a 1 year thing. MVP the next year? Well, what's he up to these days? Wow. (Once again, not saying Maybin is going to win Rookie of the Year and then win the MVP award, then go to the HOF, but just pointing things out because it's fun for me.)

We traded a FUTURE HOF for a bunch of AAA players. Darrel Whitmore was no where near as hyped as much as Maybin. That is like saying Bryan Petersen is as hyped as Maybin. That's a horrible comparison. Maybin should go to AAA, as his AA year of .277/.375/.456 (.831), 60 BB in 390 AB, is pretty damn impressive for a 21 year old and he absolutely does not need to repeat that level. Yea, he strikes out a lot, but that isn't determinative of his future. So he's not ready at 22 years old. DAM. Send him to AAA for 3 months and let him figure it out. These things take time. I bet you think Adam Jones sucked before this year too. Maybin's going to be fine.

May 9, 200917 yr I hope he is that spark that we need Me too. And I also hope he gets consistant ABs. He probably won't start immediately, and maybe this is meant to put pressure on Maybin/Boni to see if they can step up, but Coghlan won't help us riding the pine. "put pressure on Maybin/Boni/Ross/Uggla/Hermida" Just about no one on the team is hitting. And yet all the blame goes to Maybin and Boni. Maybin I'm a little worried about. But Boni is looking more comfortable in his ABs the last couple weeks. His Ks are also down. And his D is very good. He gets more of the learning curve. Just another one of those times you can't always look at the stats. Actually, I agree that Boni's been looking better than his stats, and Maybin isn't as bad as his line would indicate. I would not send either one down quite yet (more on that in a moment). However, both Boni and Maybin are young and unproven, and the question is, how long should the Marlins wait around for them to adjust to their learning curve. Maybe they adjust quicker now that they see the Marlins making moves to help the offense. The leash gets a little shorter. There is no greater motivator than the possibility of losing your job (not that I think these guys are unmotivated). It is a fine line though to walk between pushing them forward and pushing them into the ground. You don't want them to press now that a "replacement" is called up. On the flipside, there is no guarantee that Coghlan procudes better than these guys, good minor league numbers and all. Which is why Boni and Maybin should stay up, barring an even bigger slide. On the subject of Uggla et al, as others have said, you have a track record with those guys. You can somewhat predict what they will eventually do (season long slumps ala Lowell, notwithstanding). That's what the Marlins are trying to figure out with Boni and Maybin. Are they overmatched? Or are they adjusting? If they are overmatched, let's have Coghlan, just in case. Pretty much agree with everything here. Including Uggla. He's a staple at 2B for this year. Next year is a different story. But I'm not so sold on the other OFers. Chris is going to see time in LF. Not sure where else to put him. I think Boni's numbers will start to reflect the hard work and progress he has made, sooner rather than later (practice the bunting!!!). Maybin is another story. He looks overmatched alot of times. I don't really like switching Jeremy back to RF in a platoon situation, but it seems evident that is the plan. We are going to need another pitcher Tuesday. Whether that means someone getting sent down (Maybin or Carroll, and my best guess would be Carroll) or maybe a trade. A trade of some sort wouldn't knock me off my feet. And Jeremy's name being included wouldn't surprise me either. I don't expect it this early, but it wouldn't surprise me. If Chris can show he can adjust to the adjustments (a big if at this level) over the next couple weeks then what would surprise me is Jeremy being on our roster come August 1st. I look at what was happening last year near the trade deadline and the team's willingness to move him out of LF right now. I said it during ST, look at the way certain players have been handled the last couple years and it's not all that hard to figure out what way the FO is leaning.

I don't see how that makes this team better, unless we're getting a good young pitcher for Hermida. We're definitely not getting much for Bonifacio(ut).

May 10, 200917 yr Coghlan looked pretty good, but it was only one game, folks. lets don't get too excited. Remember last year's September call-up performance by Maybin? We all thought he was the answer to our center field problems. Well, turns out he is human and also a rookie trying to hit big league pitchers adjusting to him. Look at Bonifasio's start this year. Same thing. Having said that.... I think our not too distant future includes Coghlan, Maybin and Bonifasio. The one I really can't wait to see play at the major league level is Stanton, but he won't be called up for awhile since he's still in single A level at Jupiter.
