I remember on a few of these message boards people were calling for John Baker to get called up for months. This one goes down to the fans seeing the potential of the guy and not the FO. I can't remember the names of the people that were loving this guy up but I'm thinking the same crowd that picked this guy probably were the ones screaming Coghlan from the rooftops.

And will probably be the ones that called Boni a fraud too. We'll have to wait and see on that one.

What do they want... a cookie?

Robert Andino, Abraham Nunez, Reggie Abercrombie, John Baker, Cameron Maybin, Emilio Bonifacio

1/6. That's .167, worse than the worst of their aforementioned's batting averages.

Why do we latch onto so many poor outfielders? Does the board favor physical tools too much? Probably just because there's always at least one open spot or under-performing OF each year.

What?

Grade-A Andino

I won't make the Wally Pipp comparison, but Cesar Izturis' appendectomy has created an opportunity for Robert Andino to play every day. And he's seizing it with gusto.

Andino drove in three runs yesterday, matching his total for the entire season. He's batting .257, which opens your eyes when you consider that he hit .201 in 144 at-bats over parts of four seasons with the Florida Marlins. He's showing off tremendous range and soft hands in the field.

What does it all mean?

It means Andino will go back to the bench when Izturis returns, though it won't be for a while. Izturis isn't expected to begin baseball-related activities until he joins the Orioles in Miami for next week's series against the Marlins. And there's no rush.

We shouldn't forget that Izturis was playing his usual stellar defense, and also hitting .260 - including .298 with runners in scoring position and .360 with RISP and two outs. That's a bonus.

Andino is proving that he belongs on the roster, that he's a capable backup who could evolve into more as he gains additional experience. And that should be enough for now.

This is still Izturis' job, but Andino looks a lot more comfortable in the field than earlier this season, when he seemed to bobble every ball hit to him. And he can handle the bat better than advertised.

"Playing once a week, not playing every day, the more at-bats, the more pitches I see, the more comfortable I should be," he said.

"In Florida, you saw who was playing shortstop (Hanley Ramirez), so that was limited. It's a blessing to be over here. Izturus is a good friend of mine, so you don't want that to happen to him. But you just try to have fun, help the team win."

Blake Davis made another solid impression on the Orioles during spring training, and he's close to returning to the field after undergoing surgery to repair a fractured foot. He'll push for a roster spot next season. So will Justin Turner, who is on Triple-A Norfolk's disabled list with a sore wrist. But Andino is firmly in the mix.

He just has to keep doing what he's doing. As manager Dave Trembley always says, competition is a good thing, it's a healthy thing. And it tends to heat up when a starter no longer has his good health.

I'm lost. What is the meaning of this thread?

Yep, I always loved Andino on this team. Was one of the few to be extremely sad to see him go. Glad to see he is having success in Baltimore.

Well, success considering the player he is. I mean his stats are extremely mediocre, but hey if I'm Baltimore I'd take it.

The only person Andino would have played over on this team right now would be Bonifacio, which isn't saying much. I don't regret us getting rid of him. It had to be done.

Are we seriously complaining over losing Robert Andino?

guessing you didn't read the thread tbh.

The thread doesn't make sense, tbh. I'm just responding to...well...your post, basically.

post count......rise

I honestly have no idea what this thread is about or what rferry's post was about.

I interpreted the OP as noting the fans' ability to pick the right prospects, but honestly we have a pretty bad track record.

That's what I thought, but the names you put threw me off. I don't remember a lot of heat for "call up Abercrombie!!!" or "we need Bonifacio!!!", Nunez was before/between my time(s), and Andino's thing died off when we got replacements for him. Plus, it's way too early to say we were "wrong" about Maybin. Also, where's Coghlan on that list? Volstad? West? Hell, if you're going as far back as Nunez, where's Miguel Cabrera? Even as fast as the FO called him up, people were just screaming for him before that.

True. I think Abercrombie was mainly Ramp, who is an otherwise great and knowledgeable fan that has probably changed his username by now.

Reggie Abercrombie is and forever will be my favorite Marlin.

Reggie Abercrombie is my favorite marlin only because I traded his crappy autograph and a few others for a MLB Autographed ball of piazza.

I wanted him to suceed for so long, but in the end, blah. I moved on. What Reggie needs is to market his name in a line of clothes to throw some of A&F's money his way through deceptive advertising (his forte', you know he decieved all us fans into thinking he was the next reggie jackson).

Who gives a flip? Oh wait, saying i told you so on the internet is awesome.

Hey Iowa, I moved from Davenport, my wife graduated from Palmer. How long have you lived there? Is Iowa going to worth a sh*t next year?

Funny enough I've been a Baker fan since he was with the A's minors when we got him I was happy to hear it, and hoped to see him come up, and join the team I mean I knew he could hit but his weakness was seen as his defense but he's come a long way defensively I mean he's not a Gold Glover but he's solid back there.

I called the station 790 last year and argued with the host for like 6 minutes about the marlins having catching options with Baker, and he kept saying how he doesnt think the Fish think he will make it in the majors, and I was like yea, and Rebelo, and Trainer are great catchers? C'Mon on give the guy a chance bring him up! I'm telling you he's a solid ball player, and we went back, and forth for a couple of minutes. He then kinda laughed it off, and a week later they brought him up, and he's been the starting catcher since.

I loved how they didn't bring back Pudge, and they let Baker be the opening day catcher I mean the guy has earned his spot in this line up, and he's a solid ball player...

Shame he didn't make it in baseball he has a great name lol Reggie Abercrombie

Baker got the call up because of injuries as the last option catcher in the minors. Plain and simple. Solid behind the plate? Not even close. Good thing he can hit or he would be back in the minors.

That's also quite a twist on the Pudge thing. We were looking all winter and spring for a defensive catcher. Wasn't any available at the right price. It was Pudge's decision to not come here, not because the FO liked Baker more. But, whatever...

Pudge himself said that the reason he didn't come here was because we wanted him as a backup and he wanted to play everyday. That means that the FO wanted Baker to start over Pudge.
