July 7, 200917 yr http://florida.marlins.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090707&content_id=5742508&vkey=news_fla&fext=.jsp&c_id=fla Looks like we are close to signing another veteran in the bullpen. Glad to see the FO is going out trying to get arms but what do we do with these guys when kiko/lindy come back. I think it might work out good telling the guys in the pen if you dont perform well you wont be on this team. what do you guys think about this guy?
July 7, 200917 yr Both Williamson and Donnelly have had a lot of post season experience, not to mention pitching in World Series'. Williamson with the Red Sox and Donnelly with both the Red Sox and Angels. It's always good to stock pile arms when August rolls around. Guys like Pinto (who usually struggles late in the season) are being put on notice that any signs of ineffectiveness will send you straight to New Orleans. I also loves how Donnelly pitched last night, he looks like he has regained the form he once had in Anaheim. I would rather have these 3 guys then have to give up Gaby Sanchez for Delcarmen. Who knows Gaby might be a big part of the team in August or September.
July 7, 200917 yr Author I totally agree I think Gaby for Delcarmen would not be a good trade for us now that we have donnelly, ayala, and williamson.
July 7, 200917 yr I like the "throw sh*t against the wall and see what sticks", chances are only one (if any) of these new guys pan out, but it's worth a shot over the AA guys we've been calling up
July 7, 200917 yr I thought we were done with the signings after Donnelly. But why hasn't Williamson pitched since 2007?
July 7, 200917 yr He hasn't pitched more than 28 innings in a season since 2003. I don't see him even getting up to the majors. He was extremely overused in Cincinnati.

July 8, 200917 yr Donnelly, Ayala, and now Williamson? We would be all set right now if this was 2004...
July 8, 200917 yr Donnelly, Ayala, and now Williamson? We would be all set right now if this was 2004... Hahaha. I guess has beens are better than never was..es.
July 8, 200917 yr You might want to look for a hitter now, Beinfest. Y'know, the actual problem... THIS!
July 8, 200917 yr Don Fleer, just retired as president of the players union this spring training, told the Marlins players that they played for the worst organization in baseball (straight from the horses mouth). My question is why is the FO "bolstering" the bullpen when in reality it's not even that bad! They need a power bat because if they don't score runs, then how can the bullpen save the games? The bullpen hasn't cost us that many games, it's the offense not being able to score runs with runners in scoring position. Except for Hanley and Cantu (who is sruggling IMO) who else has RBI's. There is absolutely no threat (the only threat is a late rally where someone ends up poping out to 2nd base to lose the game) in this lineup before and after Hanley Ramirez. Trade Lindstrom and whoever else to get a power bat. With all these "veterans" they will surely find reliable bullpen help, if not a closer. Just get it done already!

Don Fehr is an idiot if he thinks that. Maybe the worst organization for a union that is ruining the game just for money, but not from a winning standpoint, which is what I think the point of baseball is.
July 8, 200917 yr You might want to look for a hitter now, Beinfest. Y'know, the actual problem... Our bullpen ERA ranks 13th in the NL. That's a problem.
July 8, 200917 yr You might want to look for a hitter now, Beinfest. Y'know, the actual problem... Our bullpen ERA ranks 13th in the NL. That's a problem. Kiko Calero and Dan Meyer have been great. Leo Nunez solid. Badenhop has done a very nice job in long relief. Pinto, for all the criticisms, isn't bad at all, considering he's the 5th best reliever in the pen. Sanches has done a solid job. And we just picked up Ayala & Donnelly. Take out Lindstrom's attrociousness + the likes of Christian Martinez and you see a much better line. Our bullpen isn't that bad. I'd say the fact that we're having trouble putting up (not too many players on this team with an .800+ .OPS, last I checked) #'s offensively is a bigger problem.
July 8, 200917 yr Our bullpen ERA ranks 13th in the NL. That's a problem. Wrong. Highly inflated from Lindstrom's meltdowns, Penn, Kensing, C. Martinez, Leroux, and Davidson. Those last five have thrown 42.1 innings with 43 ERA. Even leaving Lindstrom in who has been horrible, you take out those 5 guys and the bullpen era jumps to 3.15 on the season. That is the best bullpen era in baseball. Boston is the current leader at 3.18. This isn't cherry picking. This is just our bullpen once you take out the absolute assholes who completely destroyed it. Leo Nunez 36 IP, 3.75 era, 1.22 whip, 34 K Great Dan Meyer 33.1 IP, 1.89 era, .87 whip, 32 K Amazing Kiko Calero 31.1 IP, 2.01 era, 1.15 whip, 39 K Amazing Reynel Pinto 29 IP, 3.10 era, 1.55 whip, 27 K Acceptable Brian Sanches 19.2 IP, 3.69 era, 1.39 whip, 18 K Solid Burke Badenhop 39 IP, 3.68 era, 1.36 whip, 26 K Solid and we'll figure out from Lindstrom, Ayala, Donnelly, Williamson, Wood, Vanden Hurk etc., something We don't need more RP. Adding AAA depth is always welcome and I encourage it, but saying our bullpen era is indicative of what we have is completely wrong. It is highly skewed from absolutely insane performances by a handful of guys not on the team.

If you take out a handful of relievers from each team, all of their ERAs would lower drastically. We have a solid long relief pitcher in Badenhop, and then three relatively trustworthy relievers in Nunez, Calero, and Meyer. Pinto has had an average year and an average career at best, Sanches is a minor league journeyman, and most of our other options aren't proven reliable relievers. I'm not saying that we need a proven reliever more than a bat, but our bullpen should be improved and should be one of the top priorities.
July 8, 200917 yr By the way, we rank 8th in the NL in OPS. Not great, but not bad. If we can have average hitting and good pitching, that makes a solid team.

Well his point is that they are not on the team anymore besides Lindstrom. If you take out there horrific stats our bullpen has been great.

Even so, if you take the current bullpen for each team in the MLB, I doubt we would even be close to the best bullpen ERA in the MLB.
