November 5, 200916 yr Hunter Jones Scouting Report: Big, tough lefty who can go a lot of innings out of the pen. Above average command, deceptive delivery. Goes right at hitters. Utilizes a 88-91 mph two-seam fastball and a tough slider, which is rather new to his arsenal. Also has a low 80s slider - almost a slurve-type pitch. He has a low 80s circle change that he's moved in an out of his arsenal. Good composure on the mound, works well with men on base and in pressure situations. Great success against righties, but not all that effective against lefties. Has not been used as a lefty specialist in the past, and due to his reverse split he does not project to be used in that capacity in the future. Good fielder. Missed a lot of time in college with a fractured arm. Had successful surgery, but due to health concerns Jones went undrafted. Jose Alvarez Scouting Report: Small lefty with a 88-91 mph straight fastball. He also throws a 72-76 mph changeup and an average low-70s curveball. His curveball shows sweeping action at times, but also shows 12-6 break on occasion. It's a work in progress, but he already misses bats with it. His changeup is pretty deceptive - it keeps batters off balance. His arm action on his change is indiscernible from his fastball. Decent control, Alvarez pounds the zone, but tends to leave the ball up too often, where he really can get hit around. http://www.soxprospects.com/
November 5, 200916 yr Yes! We got something for him! I was afraid he was just going to be outright released. How are these pitchers?
November 5, 200916 yr yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss thank God that no good, no care, hot dogging player is out of here.
November 5, 200916 yr I'm gonna miss him sliding for balls 50ft away from him every night in Right Field ...
November 5, 200916 yr Jones: 2009 AAA - 53 IP, 4.25 ERA... 2009 MLB - 12.2 IP, 9.24 ERA Alvarez: 2009 A Lowell - 83 IP, 1.52 ERA... A Salem - 24.2 IP, 4.74 ERA so.... Jones is 25 ain't nothing special in AAA and Alvarez is a couple of years away from the majors? whatever
November 5, 200916 yr I can't wait to see how you guys bitch when he goes off next year. You know it's going to happen. He couldn't have gone to a better franchise. --- But considering the move, I guess if this is all you can get whatever. Hunter is now the # 3 LHP reliever in our organization. I wonder if this move is the first in a great lefty acquisition, meaning we won't be paying Pinto double the minimum to stick around next year.
November 5, 200916 yr I really dislike Jeremy Hermida but this is not much of a return for him. I expect that Hunter Jones will replace Reynel Pinto and that will not be pretty. Jones gave up 3 homers and he walked 7 batters in 12 2/3 innings for the Red Sox this season. He was 0-0 with a 9.24 ERA and a 1.82 WHIP for them in 11 games. Jones also pitched in 36 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball last season and he was 4-3 with 2 saves, a 4.25 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. He doesn't have much of an upside. Alvarez pitched in 26 games (12 starts) in Rookie+A-ball last season and he was 9-4 with a 2.26 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. Alvarez is the key to this trade but neither he nor Jones were in the top 30 prospects of the Red Sox heading into this season according to Baseball America so they won't miss them. I was hoping the Marlins wouldn't jump at the first offer which it looks like they did.

November 5, 200916 yr Is he even going to start? I doubt it, but they'll find him 350-400 PA against mostly right handed pitching and he'll probably just magically be awesome with a change of environment, and especially that ballpark.
November 5, 200916 yr Never hurts to have plenty of pitching depth. These 2 guys may or may not work out, but getting something is obviously better than releasing him and getting nothing back.

You have said that he is going to go off for five years now and you have been wrong every time.
November 5, 200916 yr The scouting report says that Jones is more effective against righties, but in his short time in the bigs last year, he was absolutely mashed by righties; on the other hand, he did well against lefties. Small sample, though.
November 5, 200916 yr The website soxprospects.com ranks 20-year-old Jose Alvarez and the nearly 26-year-old Hunter Jones in the range of the 41st to 60th top prospect in the Red Sox system: http://www.soxprospects.com/moreprospects.htm
November 5, 200916 yr The Red Sox have reportedly acquired Jeremy Hermida from the Marlins for left-handers Hunter Jones and Jose Alvarez. That's how far Hermida's stock had fallen with the Marlins. We still think it's ridiculous they didn't wait a few more weeks and see if something better came along. Hermida disappointed to the tune of a .259/.348/.392 line last season, but he's still just 25 and he hasn't lost the skills that made him one of baseball's best prospects a few years ago. It's tough to tell what the Red Sox will do with him, but they saw a chance to pick up a nice asset at a small price and pounced. Red Sox acquired outfielder Jeremy Hermida from the Marlins for LHP Hunter Jones and LHP Jose Alvarez. Hermida, the 11th overall pick in the 2002 draft, frustrated with the Marlins with injuries and unexceptional play in four years as a major leaguer and there was no way the team was going to pay him $3 million or so in his second year of arbitration. Still, it's a shame that they couldn't do better than a pair of generic left-handers. Hermida still has a lot of promise. He hit .296/.369/.501 in 123 games in 2007, and he's just going to be 26 next year. The Red Sox may not be content with him as a regular in the event that Jason Bay leaves, but they couldn't pass on the chance to acquire him at this price. But yea. He's never gone off. Just 2 years ago, and he's hit righties consistently. This was a great low risk move for the Red Sox. Sucks we had to part for this low, but hopefully Hunter turns into a useful reliever.

November 5, 200916 yr Took way too damn long. You won't be missed here Hermida, hopefully you succeed in a lefty friendly park, but you were nothing more than a negative player in my eyes.
November 5, 200916 yr I'm very excited we will have no more Hermida-wars though. I guess we'll just start doing that with Maybin though when he instantly doesn't hit an .871 or above OPS.

You act like Hermida played at a All-Star level a couple of years ago but he didn't. His hitting also didn't make up for the fact that he is one of the worst defensive outfielders that I have EVER seen. Still, this was a good move for the Red Sox because they didn't give up anything to get him. I've seen Hunter Jones pitch and it was not pretty.

Seemed I was in the minority back at the beginning of 08 who thought Hermida would still be a below average player, when everybody else here expected him to explode immediately and become all star caliber. But yeah, lets feel sorry for getting rid of the no hustle, no role (as in, still doesn't know what type of hitter he is) player. No sorrow here, glad to finally be done with having to argue with the Hermi lovers here.
