Rockies announcers call Marlins attendance on Monday "Pathetic&#34

Featured Replies

They said for a Ubaldo Jiminez start, the Marlins showing was pathetic.

I think they were just bitter b/c the Marlins attendance during Strasburg's start was close to 30,000.

Honestly, who cares? This isn't news to us that others think our attendance is pathetic.

Living out here I get the pleasure (or should I say - displeasure) of watching these guys broadcast games all year when i'm not watching the Marlins.

They are widely regarded as a horrific tandem. Don't know if you were able to see any of the pre or post game segments with Tracy Ringolsby (the guy with the cowboy hat), but he takes it to another level of insufferable.

The Rockies announcers should know a thing or two about empty as they've had practice. Their field is regularly filled with people dressed as empty seats - even on the weekends.

For the record, I hate bashing people who work on TV. It's easy to be critical when you're not the one in front of the camera. But the Rockies duo needs to start thinking through some of their comments.

People like to criticize the Marlins' attendance or payroll because they can't find good reasons to bash them, let's face it. We knocked the Mets out of the playoffs on the last day of the season two years in a row, and in 03 our payroll was 1/3rd of the Yankees, and even last year we finished in second place. Considering our payroll, we're incredible over-achievers.

South florida is hot, humid and the 15,000 people at the park looked like 3,000 because we play in a cavernous football stadium.

Dumb losers. Our opponents should focus on the product we put on the field against them, not on who's in the stands. Just wait. They'll see.

Which team has that atrociously bad duo that seems to thrive on making fun of the other team to no avail. Is it the White Sox? I remember someone on these boards who lived up there admitting that they can't stand their local commentators cause all they do is rag on people. Is it Chicago?

And just wanted to share an attendance story... I remember when they played in Puerto Rico, it was my bday so I was watching the Tuesday game over a family dinner... and my aunt commented on how many people went to the game, and I responded with something like "they generally draw the same amount here for a Marlins v Mets game" and she was like "no, I saw a game the other day and I saw so many empty seats" ....I said "You need to stop counting the empty seats and just count the filled seats, and remember we have 70,000 extra seats that Puerto Rico does." Its just a simple fact that nobody understands about our cavernous ballpark. Our attendance is low, but not as bad as it visually appears.

You know what we should do is what the A's did to their stadium. They closed the entire upper deck to make the fans who attended closer together. It's kind of late for that considering we're getting a new ballpark in a couple of years, but it's definitely an effective strategy.

I wish more people would go to games, but hey, we all know the reasons and some excuses why people don't go.

Also. Strasburg game = friday. Ubaldo "over rated" Jimenez game = monday. No one has shutup about strasburg since before the season started.

How is he overrated? He's 15-2 with an ERA under 3...

He's overrated b/c Johnson is clearly having the better season but is probably getting 1/10th of the recognition Ubaldo is.

Well to do that they have to definitely lower ticket prices. My Dad has had season tickets in the same section of the stadium, 455 for about 14 years now and we prefer sitting up there because of the better view, less people and the prices aren't bad in 18-25 dollars. I wouldn't want to be forced to buy season tickets in the same spot in the lower bowl for 25 dollars more. They'd have to significantly lower ticket prices which really isn't an option with the new stadium coming in two years.

That's called being over hyped.

As a Marlin fan I know who the best pitcher in the league is but you can't just discredit Ublado's accomplishments because the media covers him more then J.J.

You're right. I guess over-hyped would be a better word. But JJ is leading Ubaldo in almost every single pitching category except for wins and losses. If it wasn't for the run support Ubaldo has had in his starts, he'd be an 11-5 pitcher with a sub 3 ERA. Still very good, but the season JJ is having this year is historic. I think they said only 4 pitchers in MLB history have had an ERA lower than JJ's through 19 starts.

Really? Of course he's overrated. He gets put in these conversations of elites in the league because he got off to a nasty start, but his statistics are clearly re-adjusting and correcting themselves to the 3.00+ ERA pitcher he truely is.

He's got a 5.60 ERA in the past 8 starts yet he's 5-0. He should be about 3-4 instead. He's easily the most overrated pitcher in baseball right now.

You know the huge difference between JJ and Ubaldo? JJ started after his first game with like a 7.30 ERA because of a bad start, and game after game that number has shrunk almost every single game since then. So the moronic fans in the MLB cant figure out that when you play 10 games if you start at 7.00 and finish at 1.50 while your counterpart starts at 1.50 and then has an equivalent span of games where his ERA ends up being 7.00 your counterpart is exactly equal to you. Statistics at that point in Ubaldo's season wont show that he had an ERA of 7.00 however, because he already had 15 or so starts to back up his ERA and keep it low.

It's a visual trick. We all feed into the numbers that we see. Ubaldo was held at sub 1.00 ERA for so long so we all got wowed. Even as his ERA starts to climb everybody acknowledges how nasty his start was to the season because they visually saw that 0.90 ERA. However people wont see JJ's sub 1.00 ERA because it happened in between starts where he didnt have a sub 1.00 ERA, so those numbers influence his statistics. It's all about unintellegent people. People will still call Ubaldo much better even though in the past 8 games he's surrendered 28 runs and a 5.60 ERA, whereas JJ has not done that at all this season and simply let up 3 or 4 runs in 2 of his first 3 games, tainting his initial reputation from the start of the season. Guaranteed if JJ started the season without those bad games but instead had them in the middle of the season he'd be getting so much more hype than he is now.

And the fact that Ubaldo is 15-1 when (Again if you use my silly little made up formula) he should be about 14-4 while JJ is 10-3 when he should be about 16-1.

they're right. it always is. the fact that i went to the game last night and thought it was a pretty big crowd for a marlins game is also kind of pathetic. ibuy 12 dollar fish tank seats and sit right behind the plate all the time.

Why do we get upset when others talk about our team, when we do the same thing,

And, because people always like to forget, he pitches at Coors.

It was a Monday, it was the Rockies, it may have been Ubaldo, but still.

I ignore all of the ragging on the Marlins...The bottom line I will say though is: If you have a family of 4 and can go to 1 game a week, who do you see? Strasburg on a Friday or Ubaldo on a Monday? I HATE Strasburg, but even I know its a no brainer! Do your research, Rockies announcers...and for the Love of God, can commentators outside of Florida start coming up with other material? We've heard the same jokes about attendance/payroll since the STRIKE!!!! If you're gonna bash us, at least be creative!!!!!

btw, Strasburg vs Ubaldo vs Johnson: JJ is #1, Ubaldo 2, Leake 3, and Strasburg 4 imho!

I wish more people would go to games, but hey, we all know the reasons and some excuses why people don't go.

If they didn't put the balls in the humidor there, he wouldn't even be in the CY Young conversation. But you have to give him some props. Just not as much as JJ.

Edit: His home ERA with the humidor is 3.52 and his road ERA is 1.6. JJ: Home 1.41 Road 2.00. (How come when you avererage those together it comes out slightly higher than their actual total ERA?:confused)
