July 31, 201015 yr Marlins Acquire Will Ohman By Tim Dierkes [July 31 at 3:04pm CST] The Marlins acquired lefty reliever Will Ohman from the Orioles, tweets Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun.
July 31, 201015 yr The Marlins have been in the mix for Will Ohman for the last 2 years. He's consistent, experienced, and will fit perfectly into that 7th-8th inning role. I don't expect us to have given up something that big, so very nice trade.

He doesn't improve the team. I'd rather have Vanden Hurk, despite his struggles. Ohman is definitely a Beinfest player, though.

I STILL don't know what makes someone a Beinfest player or not. I just know that Hanley Ramirez - Not a Beinfest Player.
July 31, 201015 yr It's not that Vanden Hurk is going to turn into something spectacular. The concern is that Ohman is a rental and a pretty mediocre one at best. I'd rather have Robertson in the pen. Why bother trading away arms to get someone pretty bad who will be here for two months?
July 31, 201015 yr I've always been a Rick VandenHurk fan, but people around here seriously overrate him at times. I've always thought he could be a good reliever, but as a starter he's proven nothing. He's 25, and so far each opportunity given to him at the major league level he's messed up. He's got good stuff, but he still hasn't been able to turn that stuff into good control and good pitching. Will Ohman is a veteran, a lefty, and has had a nice season. VandenHurk's ceiling was probably a set up man in the future, but more likely he would've turned into a journeyman long term. We didn't lose anything of major value in VandenHurk. More importantly, this shows the FO hasn't given up on this season, and although I have doubts we can comeback and claim a wild card spot, we really didn't screw ourselves long term or short term by giving up the Holland Hammer.
July 31, 201015 yr I've wanted Ohman for some time, but not for VandenHurk. We basically traded RVH for the older version of Taylor Tankersley. I'm not a big fan of the trade. Ohman is a lefty specialist, though.
July 31, 201015 yr I don't like to lose Vanden Hurk, but the organization obviously like guys who have proven no good like Nate Robertson over him so it's not like we're really losing him when he was irrelevant. Ohman will do fine. I love how we fail to put together a bullpen at the beginning of a season, then always try and patch it up when its usually too little too late. The games we lost when we didn't have a pen at the beginning of the season will be the ones that hold us out.
July 31, 201015 yr his stats are kind of mired a 3ER outing in .1 inning 2 games ago.. Before that his era was mid 2s and he was pretty great the first 2 months of the season.... but still not worth RVH
July 31, 201015 yr honestly with the marlins payroll due to go up and maybe locking ricky and anibal up i dont see vandenhurk starting for us in the future. i think its a good trade. whip is high but he was playing for baltimore so...
July 31, 201015 yr at least he seems better than Tank's Not really. I don't know why people hate Tankersley around here.
July 31, 201015 yr LOL @ a spectacular season. K/BB under 2. Not impressed. And he's an FA after the season. I'm not a fan of this.
July 31, 201015 yr Screw it. Optimism is a lot better than everybody else taking a giant dump on this trade. It's really not a bad trade. We aren't going to be looking back in 3-5 years saying "damn, if only we kept VandenHurk". I don't think we're going to be looking back saying "Ohman was the piece we needed to get to the playoffs", but it's a confidence boost to the rest of the team that we haven't thrown in the towel on the season.

Ohman is a lefty specialist, though. This is exactly how I felt. I was happy to get Ohman but that happiness left when I saw it was for RVH, who I still think can be just as good if not better than Ohman in the pen.
