Joe Torre

No thanks.

Would you please explain why you wouldn't want him? Come on, the man led a team to the playoffs for about 15 straight seasons, that's pretty impressive.

Torre has shown when he actually has to in game manage, he is clueless. Bad defensive switches, pinch hitting, and bullpen decisions. His record as a manager in NL games(including when he was with the Yankees playing IL games at NL parks) is horrid.

To be fair - with the Mets, he never had a good team to manage. His best hitter was Dave Kingman, and he only had one good starter that whole time, and only for one season [Tom Seaver]

He did pretty well with the Braves [worst record there was 80-82] in 3 seasons, and with St. Louis he was just three games under .500.

He went back to the NL with the Dodgers and won two straight division titles.

I don't see how you can think he's a HORRIBLE NL manager.

As for those decisions, I don't really know. heh

Won two straight division titles in the weakest division in the NL with a team full of high priced players. And he cost the Dodgers more than a few games they should have won. Torre is among the most overrated managers in baseball.

The weakest division in the NL is the Central, if I'm not mistaken.

Come on, the Rockies have been tough, the D-backs were good just a couple years ago [They are the most up and down team now I think of it...] and in 2008 the D-Backs and Dodgers came down to the wire [2 game difference at the end].

And of course, the Giants haven't exactly been a pushover either.

This year at least.

The West was fairly poor in '08 with the D'Backs as their only challenge that season. Last year it did get better though.

Don't want Torre.

I could care less what he did with the Yankees; we are not the Yankees.

He's also going to ask for plenty of money I'm sure because of his "great resume;" not worth it. Remember Scott Proctor, who we once signed? I believe a big reason why he never pitched for us/his career went to sh*t was because of the fact that Torre constantly overused him. Torre does that with bullpens; he constantly seems to overuse certain middle relievers.

I do remember Tom Gordon having back to back 80+ appearance campaigns while with the Yanks so I can't argue with you on that one.

Hmm...

The claims people are making about Torre can also said about a lot of the other possible replacements. Why can't one say that Guillen and Valentine (both whom this board gushes over) aren't overrated?

I agree that all managers are overrated to a certain extent, but there is some criteria that warrants consideration and makes some better than others.

My problem with rookie managers like Edwin Rodriguez is that they don't know the league well. When Fredi and his staff were purged (or resigned), the Marlins replaced mostly everyone with rookie coaches or guys that have been in the minors. A lot of outside commentators made the observation that none of these guys know the opposition well at all, which puts the Marlins at a disadvantage.

I think the Marlins are too inclined to looking internally at their minor league ranks. I'm surprised they even brought in St. Claire, who had not only NL knowledge but NL East knowledge.
