In my eyes, unless we sign or trade for a qualified starting Center Fielder then Chris Coghlan will be starting there next season.

Dominguez really does not have to do much but hit the ball at a decent level to earn the starting role at 3rd over Boni or Helms. He's twice the better defender already and he'll get plenty of PA's to prove himself at the plate.

 

Coghlan was an average to below average Center Fielder but did get better the more he played there. He has pretty decent speed so I feel he'll be able to handle the job in center, the only problem I have is the routes he'll take to balls trying to cut them off in the gaps and reads he gets from balls off the bat. You can really work on that though with a lot of reps and balls throughout the offseason and spring training which I expect him to be doing by January.

I really hope CC does OK in CF but honestly, with the new stadium close to a year away, I don't want to see anymore projects... I'm starting to develope the mindset/mantra of "The stadium is opening soon...stop f****** around!!!"

To me it sounds like they are expecting Dominguez to win the third base job and aren't willing to put Coghlan at second base. Then again if they don't think he can handle second base, they probably weren't considering putting him at third either...

All of this indecisiveness makes me feel that CC doesn't have a real future here in SoFlo, and is being used as more of a stopgag. Which I think is ridiculous, because when he is hot, he has proven he can be one of the best hitters for avg. in all of baseball.

 

But since Uggla is gone and Cog's natural position is 2nd base, it would only be natural to have him settle in there, right? Wasn't that the "masterplan" all along? Omar Infante could definitely handle CF. Probably better than CC. I just don't understand where they see Coghlan 2-3 years from now.

Yeah exactly.

I have always believed Cogs belongs at 2B. He has proven he can handle the position (in the minors, at least) and with a full spring training he should be close to or better than Uggz was defensively. After a few months he will show us why he NEEDS to be at second. We have already lost a monster of a 2B in Uggla this off-season and to re-up with Cogs would be great for this team. There are very few 2B around the league with the offensive potential Coghlan has and we should consider the Uggla trade a blessing in disguise. This allows him to move back to the infield and the FO can go to work on piecing together the rest of the team.

 

The FO should find a CF on the market, whether it's via trade of FA, I really don't care. It is clear that we dont have a legit CF on this team or in the system. Go out and get one!!!! You can't expect to consistently win without adding top-tier talent every once in awhile. I am not saying Crawford is heading out way, but maybe we need to just go out and get Upton from Arizona. I really think a Gaby, Ricky, Leo, B-level prospect will get the deal done. From here, Logan moves to 1B where he is more comfortable and will upgrade our defense. LF then opens up for young players or Cogs just retains the position.

 

3B will be Dominguez' to lose, and if all else fails, we still have the combination of Infante, Boni, and Helms (yikes!) to handle the hot corner.

 

Why do we have to wait until we move to the new stadium to build a contender? Get the young pieces in place and go out and spend some paper. We have all the building blocks for another championship, but this time everyone will be here to stay

RF Stanton

CF Upton (being optimistic here)

 

All are young, athletic, and nowhere near their prime. This might be the scariest group of young players, with or without Upton.

 

LF and C are our only question marks, and even the catching seems to have come along with the addition of Buck. I know Skippy is in the system but to be honest, I don't know much about him or his ML projections. LF is a very easy position to fill and we could easily pay for a veteran OF and shift him over to left.

 

Priority #1- Go get Upton. The kid is a genetic freak and would be a great marketing tool for the future of this franchise.

 

Thoughts?

I really hope they put Coghlan at 2B, Dominguez at 3B, Hanley SS and LoMo at 1B. I still think that Gaby could be traded and then we can spend some money and get some OF help. I'd really love to land someone ala Xavier Nady for the OF.

/* */hasn't played a day in center field. But the Marlins - who have pledged a new commitment to defense - say they are confident he can handle the position next year because of how easily he switched from second base to left field as a rookie in 2009.

 

It's a plan that has some baseball observers at the winter meetings shaking their heads.

 

"I heard the same stuff with Alfonso Soriano when we moved him from second to left (field),' said Jim Bowden, who was general manager of the Washington Nationals in 2006. "I had very good baseball people tell me, 'Just put him in center and he'll be fine.' We experimented with that. It did not work.'

 

It didn't work for a star like Soriano. Still, the Marlins are counting on Coghlan to be the centerpiece - literally - of what likely will be the least experienced outfield in the majors.

 

Neither of Florida's corner outfielders has played a full season in the majors. Logan Morrison, a first baseman, debuted for the Marlins in left field in July. Right fielder Mike Stanton was called up in June.

 

"There is not great concern on the club's part with those three guys in the outfield,' Marlins baseball operations president Admin Beinfest said.

 

"With Chris, we have to take what we know: He made himself a left fielder in a short period of time, so we believe he'll be able to take that over to center field.'

 

Coghlan said he won't start any center-field drills until January. He started a running program almost four weeks ago as part of his rehabilitation from season-ending surgery Aug. 11 to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.

 

"Center field is going to be fun. I've got confidence in my ability to be able to play that position at a high level,' said Coghlan, who had been penciled in to play third base before he injured his knee July 25.

 

"I take it as a challenge, like I did with left field. Any time you switch to a new position, there's going to be some new things that you're going to have to adjust on the fly to. But I feel like I'm athletic enough and that I've played enough in the outfield that it's going be fun.'

 

That doesn't mean it's going to be easy.

 

"Whether he can handle center or not, I just don't know,' said former New York Mets general manager Jim Duquette. "Center field is a tougher position for him to go in there and handle it in an above average way. That's one I kind of circle and say let's see how the spring goes and how the start of the season goes with him in center.'

 

Bowden said he wouldn't be surprised if, at some point next season, Coghlan moves to second base and infielder Omar Infante takes over in center. Infante now is the likely replacement for second baseman Dan Uggla.

 

"To me, the whole key to the center fielder isn't just (moving) left, right, what you get to. It's how many singles do you take away out front,' said Bowden, an analyst for Fox Sports. "Look at Andruw Jones. The Braves' pitching was great and he caught everything out there."

 

Beinfest said "there's always a chance" the Marlins could trade for a center fielder before spring training. But for now, they're committed to giving Coghlan a chance.

 

 

 

Coglan will be given every chance to succeed and I do believe he wil show the Marlins to be worthy of their confidence...I felt he got a lot better playing LF as the season progressed and he will do the same in RF
