PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Five errors. Two dropped balls. Missed cutoff throws.

Marlins first baseman Gaby Sanchez summed up Friday's 10-0 loss to the Mets in one word.

"Embarrassing," Sanchez said. "We embarrassed the Marlins today. Just the way we played out there today was just awful. It was terrible."

Hanley Ramirez committed two errors, including dropping a pop fly that allowed a run to score with two outs in the first inning.

"No excuses," Ramirez said. "I didn't read it good off the bat."

Manager Edwin Rodriguez called the performance the worst of Spring Training.

"Hanley came in and he was embarrassed with the way we played," Rodriguez said. "That's a good sign. They know what happened. They were trying. But I don't think they were mentally ready to play.

"I saw Hanley, and he was upset. Gaby was the same way. Chris Coghlan was the same way. That's a good sign."

He's being a bit too hard on himself. Spring training.

Good to see Gaby taking responsbility and acting like a ummmmm leader!

Not much from old han ram on the issue, however.

I believe we had just as bad a game during Spring Training last year, and we all shrugged it off as just being Spring Training and nothing to worry about then too.

We'll see, but glad to see Gaby cares about seeing the team improve defensively.

More like you just ignored it.

It may be ST but 5 errors don't lie.

It does when 2/3rd the players who committed them will either be on the bench or in NOLA.

"No excuses," Ramirez said.

The Marlins' effort, Ramirez said, reflected poorly on outfield coach Joe Espada and infield coach Perry Hill, nicknamed Bone.

"We made Bone and Espada look bad, and they're working their [tails] off every day," Ramirez said. "I told everybody, we've just got to come back tomorrow and pick it up."

did nobody catch this bit?

"No excuses," Ramirez said. "I didn't read it good off the bat."

No excuses. Hold on lemme just sneak one in there.

I don't really think that's an excuse.

Of course it is. I mean, he's still blaming himself, but that's his excuse. It should be, 'no excuses, I should have been giving 100%'.

That's not the way I understand it. I read it as, he is not making an excuse for himself. He didn't get a good read off of the bat and he should have. He is at fault and he knows it.

There's a thin line between an excuse and an explanation.

To Hanley's credit, he took the entire blame for what was his mistake. Sounds like an honest explanation to me.

An excuse would be attempting to blame it on some external factor like "I was distracted by the cute female behind the dugout who was yelling that she wanted to have my child," or "my shoelace was untied and I almost tripped and got a slow start."

The old Hanley would probably have sulked, if asked about it. I like the new version better, so far.

Oh no, his attitude is great. Don't get me wrong, I just thought it was funny because while he wasn't actually trying to make an excuse, he just simply shouldn't have said anything. Obviously I'm just dissecting it way, way, way too much.

But it's spring training and I'm bored!

Yeah, I thought it was simply an explanation, as well.

But whatever. April needs to get here soon!

According to Capozzi, Gaby apologized to Loria:

Don't tell first baseman Gaby Sanchez it was just a spring training game. He was so upset after the Marlins made five errors Friday in a 10-0 loss to the New York Mets that he apologized to owner Jeffrey Loria."It was awful. We embarrassed ourselves and we embarrassed the Marlins today. It was terrible,' Sanchez told reporters. "It was just bad baseball, awful baseball. There is no other way of looking at it.'

2 OF throwing errors along with a dropped ball. We have an OF coach that has never held the position before. But seeing he has some HOFers helping him, this is really no excuse.

Throwing errors bug me the most because the error will usually go to the thrower when it is really a catching error. Balls that should/could have been caught but weren't right on target, or the reciever wasn't where he was supposed to be so the thrower gets the big E. When a game is this fast OFers will be throwing to a spot, more than taking the time to ensure the other player is actually where he is supposed to be. Also, so far this Spring we have 3 IF throwing errors.

To be fair, I haven't witnessed any of these errors, so I have no idea if they were real throwing errors or not. A friend at the Marlins at Cards game last Sunday told me that Hanley did air mail his throw in that game. That's gonna happen. Rushing the play or the ball simply slipping. And this is the time to work on those things.

It could just be a mid-Spring slump. The initial excitement and enthusiasm of playing ballgames again has worn off, and now the players have lost a bit of concentration before they hopefully pick it back up in the final week as a tune-up for the regular season.

That's not really an excuse as much as an explanation. Reading the ball off the bat is a fundamental at this level.

I'm glad they are getting upset over it. Yeah it's only ST, but you don't want this kind of performance lingering on their minds when April comes.

I agree with the "that's not an excuse" brigade. He's explaining what happened, not excusing his actions.

Again, I know lol. It just sounds funny.

Another embarrassment today........c'mon guys PICK IT UP !

Eh. Error wise, at least, wasn't a horrible game on the box score (just one), but pitching and offense wise, yikes :/ I'm not too worried yet, but I will start worrying in the final weeks of spring if it's primarily our starters that are sucking it up...
